  • So I read A Court Of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) and boy was I disappointed. In this video I discuss all my issues with this overhyped beauty and the beast retelling, so I hope you enjoy my frustrations with this book.
    I will probably continue this series if not for the content I can make on it alone. But I am genuinely open to have my mind changed if the next installments offer anything worth while and of substance. Because this first book was a nonsensical mess.
    Enjoy the video, Ik I’m in the minority when it comes to not enjoying this book😅

    So when booktube began, there were some popular booktubers who promoted this book, saying things like it’s the best retelling of beauty and the beast. I really think they got paid to give this 5 stars. This book was HORRIBLE. In fact, anything that Sarah J Maas wrote, is plain trash.

  • @WadzanaiMufunde
    @WadzanaiMufunde Před rokem +65

    Thanks for the interesting review! I agree that Rhysand is better as a villain than a love interest. The way he treats Feyre under the mountain with the drugging and forced lap dancing was abusive and for him to later go on and try to behave like it was part of some ingenious plan to protect eveyone is disgusting. It was also sooo unnecesarry. If Maas wanted him as a love interest, he didn't have to inflict any of that pain on the MC. Otherwise, he ought to at least own his cruelty. I don't mind humanising morally ambiguous characters, but that wasn't ambiguous. It was just straight up evil abuse. Strangely, I really liked Rhysand as a love interest when I first read this series several years ago, but now I'm actually just horrified. I also never finished the original trilogy. The war felt so pointless and boring.
    Also, I see you use both 'Rees-and' and 'Rice-and' pronunciations interchangeably. I find his name soo annoying because when it's Rhysand, I say 'Rice-and' but over time, people start calling him Rhys, and I can't in good conscious call the High Lord of the Night Court, rice! What is it with Maas and wriitng love interests with names I can't pronounce? I thought Chaol was bad...

      Thank you so much for taking the time to comment all this, it means a lot 😊 We are definitely on the same page with Rhysand then! It’s baffling how in the second one they just gloss over it like ah yes just a small step in the plan, like Excuse me ?? And yes his name is so annoying!! I feel like maybe it’s based on accents like, Americans say RhysAnd and Brits say Riceand but I’m not sure on that theory maybe we’re just wrong 😂 thanks again for the comment!

    Thank you for this review! ACOTAR is literally everywhere over the internet and two book friends recommended it so I listened to the audiobook but sooo much of it really makes no sense. She killed Tamlin's friend and is rewarded by living in his mension. She starts to paint and does nothing all day. Only after months does she suddenly miss her sisters. Tamlin in heat that whole ceremony honestly I didn't like it. It's again that possesive owning mating but I guess some ppl like that. And the whole female Villain she was a 2D character just meant to be a Villain. Like she just wanted to own or kill everyone and as you said the riddles were also like: what? And Rhysand was definitely not moral with those tattoos. I could understand him being a bad boy love interest, I can. But suddenly swapping his personality with Tamlin's basically in the sequel to make him all good??? How???? Why????

    This book was so bad, I kept laughing throughout it, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. The writing was bad many times, I hated that the entire plot was explained by a few characters, the world building was sloppy, I have no clue what time period this takes place, the characters’ dialogue is silly and cringey and doesn’t make much sense (it doesn’t help me suspend my disbelief at all), and even the s*x scenes are subpar, I was very disappointed. Did the girlies who love this book series never read Wattpad as young girls, or maybe they didn’t get all the smut and bad writing on that app out of their system, idk

    I never read this series because a friend of mine read it and tried to convince me to read it too since according to her 'It was right up my alley' (she probably thought that since I usually enjoy enemies to lovers). However when I heard what happened in book one and that somehow Rhysand was going to be the love interest in the second book I immediately lost interest. The fun thing is that my friends were calling me out for being an hypocrite since i love Captive Prince, and what Laurent puts Damen through in the first book is not for the faint of heart XD. In my defense what they forget is that in Captive Prince all the characters are so complex and compelling that I was actually interested to see their development (nothing in those books ever felt unnecessary) , the characters in ACOTAR sounded kinda boring, plus ACOTAR has a love triangle (which is something I hate with a passion) and the plot sounded kinda cringey.

    Honestly what gets on my nerves the most is the wasted potential that ACOTAR's world presents. The courts, how they work and everything that jas to do with Hybern and its king is genuinely interesting, same applies with thw high lords and the backstory of the war and the relationship that humans and faes had before it. Amarantha was also set-up to be quite the intimidating villain considering she robed the power from the high lords, and I genuinely thought she'd be a reocurring villain for the next like 2 books (since I already knew this series had 5 books) and that she would be way more developed on in the future, but the author simply decided to kill her off on that same book and leave her as a plain and boring villain who simply wanted to bed Tamlin and send the humans with their creator because something something, my sister was killed by a human, something something I hate them now... As I said, it truly sucks for me, because there are some great ideas there, just poorly executed, and I don't believe that this book gives the justice the world the author has set up deserves.

    I liked the first chapter because it immediately caused the conflict to later occur in the book. However, I couldn’t read past chapter 21. Honestly disgusting for me and I couldn’t even pass the fact that Rhysand drugged her and forced her to do stuff, and the fact that Tamlin just sat there like a dog, while she basically sold her life within those three months for their entertainment.

    Yes to everything you said!! (although, Tamlin was all over Fayre bc he was surging with ritual magic and couldn’t control his urges. That’s why he tells Fayre multiple times to stay in her room and not look for him. And, of course, like every other time he tells her something, she won’t listen!) And worst of all, this book is terribly written! I guess it’s supposed to be YA, so maybe that’s why it seems to be written at an 8th grade reading level and the cheesy dialog seems to be lifted from an episode of the Kardashians rather than a high fantasy novel … but then if it’s YA, why all the sex? And if it’s about sexy fairies, maybe write for and older audience and ACTUALLY make the sex scenes hot. The only thing hot about this book was the Hot Mess it created! (Oh… and that “riddle” that would save everyone?? I literally figured it out immediately after I read it. And I literally had to put down the book in pathetic disgust.

I want to preface that it is amazing that authors of every literary background can publish and make a living off it and even more fantastic they have the fanbase for it. But this book isnt a literary work of art as many others and advertisements make it out to be.
    Not say every book we read had to be this genuis work, but the hype for this book and under fantasy genre, people were giving me the impression this was up there with Tolkien and Martin. I really tried to like it but when I realized it wasnt going to get better I felt scammed hahaha.

      I also have to say something that really struck me was the lack of emotional development for Feyre. I eventually did read about 10 chapters of the next book mist and fury when I was trying so hard to like it. The way the author chose to show how guilty Feyre felt about all the deaths a WHOLE book after is bizarre. It was still scarce but imo mentioned more in the second book than when she was forced to face them. It's like she was attempting to show Feyre's ability to reflect but it failed miserably especially when she spent more time with the steamy bits and the descriptions of the city.

    Thank you for your video, good to see I`m not the only one.
    I just don`t get the hype with this book, I`ve never read a SJM book before. Picked it up after hearing about it so much on social media, and it was meant to be soooo good. Upon starting reading it, i felt the writing is bad. Straight away i felt Cinderella vibes with the presentation of MC. As MC commits a crime she get sent of to "get the punishment", the "Beauty and the Beast" vibes came in strong. I even thought at some point; "when is he gonna introduce her to the library?" and lo and behold, just a few pages later that happens. Nothing is original in this book, it`s done before. There is also so many "why`s". A never ending list of why. Like the why`s of Twilight; why does a 100 year old vampire falls in love with a teenager, why would a 500 year old fay fall in love with a teenage girl? All characters are so boring and colorless, most of all the MC. She honestly has nothing special to her. She uses a weapon that basically is fay kryptonite and nothing else. Throughout the book it`s difficult to see if MC has anything to her at all. I honestly struggle to see why the characters are attracted to one another. There is no attraction. So when MC goes to save "the man she loves", I just keep wondering when that happened and what pages I obviously didn`t read. I often find that SJM avoids going into detail, like when she write about MC blackout when she drinks. And that this continues at the very end of the book. Man, I listened to this audiobook because it seemed so popular and I was just confused at there being hardly any plot aside from the guy and girl being horny for each other. The 'love' story was flat- there was really no development or reason for their 'love', in fact she had more of a friendship with that Lucien character. Also, she was soooo desperate to see her family again who treated her like trash? Another nitpick is the repetitive language the author uses. Everyone 'breathes' instead of describing their reactions in a varying manner? Everything also 'fit like a second skin'. This book is popular? Sorry, I just don't get it. It wasn't even trashy entertainment, just boring af. (I just got the point of this video where you explain that she ends up with Rhysand- omg that is so stupid- she was SOOOOO in love with the other dude she risked her life then they don't even end up together? SO stupid.)

Not sure I can say the rest of the series is great from an objective standpoint but they're a pretty major guilty pleasure at best and so bad it's good at worst. I feel like it's easy to assume it's gonna be a bad take when you praise throne of glass, an objectively worse written book, yet admonish ACOTAR. If you want to go at this with the snobby superiority of a classical literature enthusiast looking down on all romantasy books, then sure. Pop off. But you're here talking about how Throne of Glass was good? Throne is Glass is straight up a badly written book. It's poorly paced and poorly developed with characters doing the LEAST believably things in any given situation. It's very obviously Sarah's first book and the lack of knowledge in characterization and narrative organization is very apparent. ACOTAR is straight up...better. Every point I made about Throne of Glass is objectively better in ACOTAR. It is a better piece of writing from a technical standpoint. Now that's not to take away from your opinion. I can totally understand why you like Throne of Glass more. I think aspects of Throne of Glass are far more interesting and appeal to me more than ACOTAR. I think it offers a better high fantasy experience. That doesn't make it better.
    Honestly anyone that disparages SJM annoy me so much because they talk about all these FAR BETTER BOOKS in the genre. Like bishhh...where?? People will name drop the same 2 books as if that constitutes a whole list of them. Like yes...I'm aware The Poppy War is effing amazing and probably the best YA fantasy book out there...but that's just it...that's like the only one. Whatever generic one you try to hit me with as response definitely isn't as good as Poppy War. The genre is, my definition, a little cringey for anyone who outgrows it and a little too simplistic for older readers. Accept ACOTAR and all other books in the romantasy genre for what they are and judge them on what they deserve to be judged on. Also...the first 5 minutes of your video is bashing the book based on its premise....the same premise as BEAUTY AND THE BEAST??? It's literally a Beauty and the Beast retelling....and you're throwing shade on the one aspect it has in common with its inspiration material lmao. Also getting mad that the illiterate girl couldn't "figure out the reading challenge on her own" was laughably at best. Like...no that wasn't an opportunity for character growth...she cant read buddy.... You don't just magically start understanding words. At best she could guess...which is what she almost did, until Rhysand stops her from choosing wrong and helps her select the correct answer. Not sure why you feel like that was supposed to be some triumphant girl power moment. Feyre can't read and it's a huge liability for her and almost gets her killed. It's why she's open to being taught to read by her enemies in the next book.
    Dont meant to get too rude here...but like come on. People are gonna watch these videos, so you need to be able to defend them. You should formulate some better talking points instead of winging it to avoid these.

      @BBS-dl1lt Před 5 měsíci

      @@nimrah3341 opinions can be subjective. Many of his points were not opinions. There is a right and wrong answer when it comes to writing from a technical perspective. And besides that, my other point about literally disparaging the premise of beauty and the beast was…funny to say the least. You can say “I think beauty and the beast is a bad fairytale and so I don’t think a retelling is something I’d enjoy.” But that’s not what he said. He broke down, moment by moment, the concept of being taken to live with the scary man in another land in his caste and not being allowed to leave. And how that was stupid and contrived and disparaging Sarah J Maas for it as if it was her original idea. It’s a retelling and that’s literally the premise of beauty and the beast. Like come on…. Fine review otherwise, but don’t pretend my points are invalid.

    • @nimrah3341
      @nimrah3341 Před 5 měsíci

      So him saying what he didn't like about the book is .... not his opinion? But in your opinion it's stupid...? Also I feel like if Maas is going to retell a fairytale it shouldn't take more than one book tbh. It's really not that deep- go Maas for profiting off of five whole books, and I don't think Sam's opinions I'd going to get her any less money or popularity. If it were that deep, I'd bring up the family history of Gabrielle Suzanne de villeneuve 💀
