- After 35 years of use, my workbench was pretty worn. I used vinyl plank flooring to recover it. The results are fantastic! The new top is bright and tough. This is a really easy and inexpensive way to finish or re-finish a work bench top.

Suggestion for the slim cut, cut the back and front boards so they both are about half. That way it is better connected and that slim cut piece doesn’t pop off easy.(as it’s no longer slim) Alternatively keep the slim cut piece against the wall were it gets less abuse.
Great tip John! Thanks for sharing!
Looks great!
Thank you! I’m still happy with it.
Great idea - looks nice!
Thanks! It’s holding up well.
Thank you….you gave me the best idea for our workbench….new subscriber.
Thank you for commenting and subbing! My brother did the same thing and is very happy with the results. Good luck with the project!
Great video and I just bought my flooring today at Costco to do it! 👍
Great Troy. Mine has held up really well. Thanks for letting me know.
I have some leftover flooring and I’ll give it a shot. Thanks nice video.
Awesome. I hope it works out for you! Thanks for the comment!
Great idea and probably cheaper than epoxy etc and way better surface! Actually I think the term for the connecting edges is Ship Lap
Thanks! It was pretty cost effective. I have found that it cleans pretty easily and I haven’t damaged it yet. Shiplap is probably a good term to describe the overlapping edges. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
Rmarvids - just order a 12x20 man shed and wanted to do a work bench and love the vinyl idea I cam stealing that one - Great idea and with my gray walls and black metal roof that vinyl will pop -
Mike
Awesome. It works out well!
I was thinking about doing real hardwood on my bench. Just got done building it. Only about 8 square feet of surface area, not expensive. One box can just about cover it 3 times. I can remove pieces and replace them if they get messed up real bad. Tongue and groove should hold them in place well and I can just tac some 18 gauge stainless brad nails in the corners. Vinyl might be better for a softer surface working on some things but be tough for heavy things. I have silicone mats I use though. Great video, thank you for posting it.
Thank you Paul! I think your plan sounds great. Good luck!
What is the actual product you used? It looks like laminate flooring.
I don’t recall the brand but it is a vinyl flooring. It is holding up well. I bought what was on sale.
You should of made the small pieces at the back
Good point. Haven’t had any issues though. Thanks!
