    I... preferred a lot of things in this spin-off actually. For starters, Haruhi is not so overbearing as she is more of a supporting character and in that sense really shines. Asakura was one of my favorites as just the total mom of the group and they basically turned a filler character into a main supporting character. Along with Haruhi the less of Koizumi the better.

    Personally, I felt like this really didn't have all that much substance to it. Yes, I understand that it is a slice-of-life, and is in no way related to the whole original canon of the original Haruhi, but there really wasn't anything that I was really special about it. Yes, we have the Haruhi characters, yes there were some great wacky moments and references, but aside from that, there wasn't really much. The romance (like almost all anime love stories) goes nowhere, there're hints of a love triangle that never took off, the ending was somewhat infuriating seeing as how they just leave it like that, the disappearance arc really didn't make all that much sense, and I wish they left the whole "John" thing out of the series. It confused me seeing as how present day Kyon met little Haruhi, and that whole field marking signal for aliens thing happened. I thought that only pertained to the original timeline; butterfly effect maybe?

      +Jonathan “PyraXadon” Tick "the disappearance arc really didn't make all that much sense"
      And this is why we have opinions. You were probably too busy hating it instead of appreciating it. The Disappearance arc was extremely straightforward IMO and it's easily the best part of the show.

    • @PyraXadon
      @PyraXadon Před 9 lety +2

      +asianyeti Ok...then how did Yuki just switch personalities all of a sudden? Just...how did that happen? (And I am not hating it. If I was, I wouldn't say that I enjoyed the more comical moments.) Seriously though, how did Yuki switch personalities? Explain please.

      +Jonathan “PyraXadon” Tick she was a real human and not an alien at that point you dumbfuck they came out and said it straight like 8 times do you just watch anime for the pictures and not even listen (or read) what the characters are saying

    • @Hibernape
      @Hibernape Před 9 lety +4

      ***** Yuki's mental state went into a shock when she almost got ran over by a car. This caused her main consciousness/personality to be held in stasis (which in turn, the "fake" personality feels like it's reading another person's memory even though it is his/her own). This is something that happens a lot in real life as well although it is rare and different compared to something more common like amnesia.

  • @stormcutter59

    This series was something of a hit and miss for me. I really enjoyed seeing the show progress with the characters I know and love coming back to just bring a smile back to my face again, yet it was not to last long. Their were a few good moments that got me invested in the plot but I felt more could have been done with it. Make it more than romance, give it more of a connection to something otherworldly like the original series did only differently. We get a glimpse of the flaws original Yuki made when creating this world when Nagato returns to her old persona for a short amount of time. More stuff like that would have been fantastic. I love the series for it's atmosphere here but I felt myself get truly bored with it after a decent amount of time. The story just went no where and you need to get somewhere with your show or....well you stop. Really without the SHEER nostalgia factor from the original series, I would not even bother with this show. It HEAVILY rides on the popularity of the show it's based on as a means to get by with its run time and that really shows. As a fan I'm glad to have seen this show, but I can't turn a blind eye to it's shortcomings. I don't like to say it but I honestly expected more.

    About 7 years later but I just wanted to say that I adored and absolutely fell for this show *Hard.* Mostly because of how I interpreted the show itself. I know it's "technically" not _"officially"_ a direct canon continuation from The Melancholy anime or The Disappearance film, *However* the the viewing is still that much more impactful if you see it as still *Attached* to the original anime in it's own way (parallel or alternate universes).
    Specifically I see it as Yuki taking some of Haruhi's power and finally forming a world and life that she wants (Which is basically what she did in the film anyway). Instead of being an emotionless robotic alien, she gets to finally be the exact opposite and can experience human connections.
    My favorite implication is that both _The Disappearance_ film Nagato and this "Yuki-Chan" Nagato both fell for Kyon super hard, so it's _implied_ that the original Alien Nagato probably did as well, but couldn't make anything of it for obvious reasons (robot alien).
    And why wouldn't she fall for him? He's the only one who seemed to really care for her so much as a person, and even saved her when the Data Entity planned to get rid of her.

  • @pigcowhybrid
    @pigcowhybrid Před 9 lety +9

    My main issue with this show is the artwork: Kyon now looks like a really generic character and the background looked flat at many parts.
    Music wasn't so bad, but there was so much Clair de Lune misuse.
    It isn't very interesting story-wise, since Haruhi isn't always there, but I suppose it's nice to see all those characters do stuff together again.
    This kinda gives hope that season 3 will finally be produced, although I wouldn't want Satelight to do it (in the event that KyoAni gives up).
    There'll be Season 3, right? Right?

    I do agree with what you said about the romantic relationships in the original series for the most part but might I also add in that we also have a bit of a romance with Yuki at the end of the disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya in that Kyon better understands Nagato's true feelings for him by the end which I would be interested to see where that goes if they ever do a continuation of Haruhi

      I agree, but from the way the light novels went before their indefinite hiatus, I doubt we'd be getting that. Romance really isn't a big thing in the Haruhi universe, and from the way things are going, even if Kyon did end up with someone in the end, it's likely going to be Haruhi. (Unlike a large portion of the fanbase though, I don't ship Kyon and Haruhi. I can't see them as more than close friends, and I already ship him with Yuki and Koizumi lol)

    Knowing all haruhi suzumiya episodes really had an impact! I was hoping they's be able to connect it back to the main timeline where kyon like in the disappearance of HSuzumiya movie, had to choose whether to stay or go back to that timeline. That wouldve been a mind blower!

    The Yuki Nagato as we knew her in the original 28 Episodes of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" was a very enjoyable and very good written character. The alternate Yuki Nagato as we got to see her in the movie "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" was someone I personally couldn't get enough of. I bingewatched the whole series plus the movie in 2 days, and few minutes right after the movie this series here would follow. Since I loved what the actual Yuki Nagato that we got in the movie was like, my bar for this Anime was set sky high... only for this bar to be used as a weapon to stab me right in the gut after I saw only *30 SECONDS* of it... This character was so out of the character that I've seen mere minutes before in the movie... so extremely, so exaggeratingly shy and awkward (yes, much, much more than she was in the movie), I was (successfully) able to predict the quality of this slice-of-life-romcom in its first 30 seconds... It was a blessing when Haruhi came and joined the main cast again, her cheer and hype and crazy thought process hadn't changed in the slightest... Too bad that this is an alternate universe where Haruhi never got any powers in the first place... A bit of crazy things happening could have really helped this show... Besides completely butchering the main character, the good things about this anime would be the fact that they haven't changed any of the other characters in the slightest (besides Kyon getting a redesign which you may or may not get used to), the other good points being that this anime will make you get a good amount of nostalgia (depending on how long it's been that you watched the main series) mostly involving Haruhi and her usual eccentric awesome self and also the fact that the story keeps full continuity based off of the altered world in the Disappearance movie (if you wanna know the timeline placement: this anime starts a day after the day where the original series left off, so it's also just before the Disappearance movie would take place. If this helps you: the setting is essentially the exact same like the altered world from the movie except that Kyon doesn't have any memories from the unaltered world. Of course in reality he naturally never experienced any of the stuff that happened that happened in that unaltered world because it never existed)
    In any case: Is this anime worth watching? For the sake of seeing more of our King-of-Snark-Protagonist and our Queen-of-Eccentricity (and in general something new from our beloved franchise, yes. For the sake of seeing a good romcom and a sweet well developed love story, definitely not. If you don't know about anything of the original franchise, you will get bored rather quickly... very quickly... extremely quickly..
    If someone still manages to keep up their patience long enough into this series though, there is a very enjoyable and first and foremost interesting arc waiting for you (more for the original fans though than any newcomers)
    6.5/10 for me
    Yup...

      If you think about it, this was pretty much what the new timeline Nagato created in the movie would have been.
      It is strongly hinted that it is that way through the entire season, which just makes you think and feel for what the original Nagato felt during the main series.

    Just watched it. It's disappointing at its best. I wanted them to pursue the love triangle subplot more. Instead they focused on a checklist of SoL tropes. Beach, hotspring, trip, etc wtf.
    And the characters came out like watered down version of themselves.
    Kyon - still has some of the same snark, but lacked the innate negativity he had
    Haruhi - probably the one closest to her original version, although a bit more reasonable and kinder
    Itsuki - screwed the character so bad, they made him like an oversexed bisexual
    Asahina - stayed true to her character, but they unneedlessly made her love pointless objects. Like, what?
    Yuki - the worst offender here. They butchered the Disappearance Yuki. It was a bad interpretation of an existing character (granted she had small screen time)

    I caught every little thing. There's even a part where Asuhina and Haruhi are wearing a sheep and penguin outfit which is a homage to The Melancholy Of Harui-chan Suzumiya. There's a joke made about Kyon getting stabbed from behind. Also, the last two episodes are throwbacks to the Endless Eight, there's even a part after the credits of the last episode where it's like the opening to the Endless Eight and it ends with the blue haired chick asking him if he did his homework. I just love these characters so much. I want to see them all again. Now I have the biggest hole in my life to fill. I've watched everything relating to Haruhi ;-;

    Kyon and Asakura are nothing like their characters in the original Haruhi anime. Kyon's change from a self-reflective, cynical, and snarky personality to the very essence of bland is particularly an issue for me. His transformation into Joe Everyboy Romance Protagonist was the keystone in changing this--for me--from a "What If" in the Haurhi universe to just another dime-a-dozen romcom. You could replace Kyon and Yuki with just about anyone (in the first half of the series, anyway), and it wouldn't change at all.

    • @Rthe47

    I originally saw this anime while I was on Hulu looking to see if they had Haruhi. I still haven't watched it and plan on rewatching Haruhi before I do. Yuki Nagato was personally my favorite character besides maybe Kyon and seeing her in the disappearance movie was rather beautiful to me. I always wondered what went on in Yuki's head and always wondered what it would be like if she had feelings NOW I GET A WHOLE ANIME ABOUT THAT SO I'M HAPPY.
    Now if you're looking for another light hearted romantic comedy, I suggest *_"Ouran High School Host Club."_* It is a hilarious anime with a bit of reverse harem in there but the comedy overshadows that so drastically that I am pleased to say that anime lovers of either sex will like it. Please note that it i an anime that deserved a first season but of current date does not have one.

    The story and journey of Yuki Nagato as a character is honestly insane: starting as an alien robot in the original series, becoming a regular human in the movie only to have Kyon leave back to the original world, getting her own spinoff world in the anime where her attempts at a relationship with Kyon take agonizingly long to blossom, to finally *spoiler* getting together with Kyon at the end of the manga. What a journey for Nagato as a character!

Plus, since the manga is now finished it's possible that they will do a reboot. I also haven't seen anyone review it. It's not that well know which is a shame. • @PyraXadon
      @PyraXadon Před 9 lety +13

      +jmcm30 Personally, I wasn't expecting Haruhi season three, since this takes place in the disappearance world and not the original haruhi world, but the issue was the fact that you have Haruhi characters, which would make one expect something like the Haruhi franchise.
      Of course, putting that aside, the boorish story with the meandering plot of slice-of-lifeness that really didn't have anything interesting to add had a profoundly negative impact on the series. Other slice-of-life series have something interesting in each one of them in order to make them stand out from the rest (aka, Non Non Biyori's countryside setting, Mushishi's mystical feeling, the nonsensicalness of Lucky Star) whereas Yuki Nagato didn't really have much to offer. Plus, the whole disappearance thing aspect of the show came out of left field, and I did not appreciate that.

  • @vishanthfishy
    @vishanthfishy Před 5 lety +2

    Ok i have problems. Absolutely none of the characters are like their original counterpart. I will excuse Nagato as that's the whole point of the series. Haruhi retains her spunk but is made to be more likable , The original Haruhi was a control freak and always had her way that was the beauty of her character. Koizumi is a little bitch who is no longer a cool calm collected esper but is reduced to Haruhis side bitch. kyons sister is apparently abusive now. Even Tsuruya is more like Haruhi lite rather than that kind rich girl who laughs at everything. But the biggest change is Kyon. Wtf was Kyon in this show, he lost all of his cynical sarcasm and care free attitude. Kyon is super nice in this show but in the original he was a normal high schooler who was trying his best to be nice whereas in this show he is just straight up nice. Thank God for Mikuru and Taniguchi who are the only characters who stayed the same. Only compliment i have is Asakura who was a really warm welcome and was a fully fledged character who retained her motherly qualities from the original and disappearance (minus the killer stuff). Asakura was so good i kinda wish we got to see more of this version of her in the original. In the end this anime could have been done with different characters and did not need to Haruhi brand label.

    if season 3 does not materialize (it never will), a movie series (like boukoku no akito style) might do, focusing on the important arcs leading up to the confusing-to-read alpha and beta timelines and Sasaki the god.

    Hey Arkada, I'm not sure if you've read the light novels for Haruhi, but I just started them and found an interesting thing. When Haruhi introduces herself, she says she's interested in "aliens, time travellers, SLIDERS, or espers". Kyon has always been the standalone straight man normal guy, but, while earlier ones are slipping my mind, the Disappearance proves that Kyon himself is a slider, a person who travels between parallel dimensions, alternate worlds. That could lead to some serious implications for his character, maybe, in his boredom he slid into this world with Haruhi being God without even knowing it. But I rather not jump into that rabbit hole, just thought I'd point out that Kyon isn't really that "normal guy" that the show likes to portray him as
