+distortioncharizard Yes, because I can relate, I found it so fucking hilarious, yet sad at the same time. I don't even know how many jokes I cracked in his comment section, yet embarrassingly not a single one was found to be funny. Not. A. Single. Fucking. One. I want my dignity back!
Azumanga Daioh is pretty much the pinnicle of slice of life and what most, if not all, slice of life anime look up to nowadays. If you want to know what anime is named the godfather of comedies, look no further. As to the reasons it is called the godfather of SOL, Arkada said it best.
Me too. I just can't stop laughing when I see her blissful smile. The scene that cracked me up is when she went to wake up Yukari, with a knife. That smiling face of hers while holding a knife, I can't🤣🤣🤣
Episode 19 "One spring night" was my favourite part of the show. It highlighted a lot of the characters' insecurities and had relatable moments that felt so far away from the present yet nostalgic. Tomo Crashing at Yomi's place and just chilling on the bed while Yomi studies and listens to the radio and then Yomi getting hyped when her favourite obscure late night radio reads out her message and showing us how worried she is about her weight and in a really subtle way shows us really how good friends they both are - Tomo beyond the mild teasing doesn't shame her for it later in the series and Yomi was already used to the goodness of Tomo. Chiyo being scared of the dark reminded us that although she may have the intellect of a high schooler is still a child at heart (also I really appreciate how they wrote Chiyo's character - unlike the recent degenerate ways that most modern anime resort to) and Kagura's conversation with her about her future - and seeing Kagura work hard for getting to nationals by running in the evening while everyone else was just casually hanging out really shattered our perspective of this just being revolving around the antics and mishaps of the main cast and showed us that some of them are working hard towards thier goals, Nyamo's family pushing her to get married and then her worries about her age, then her dinner with Yukari and a friend which just made her question her life choices internally and wonder about what she really wants in life... This is the best slice of life show I have seen.
This show really helped me when I first started high school. I moved to Wisconsin to begin my first year in highschool and I was a little homesick and even felt like an outcast. Then one day, my mama got cable and I clicked through the menu and saw a category labeled Anime Network. I was already familiar with anime in general but only the ones that I saw back at home on Adult swim such as Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasha. Anyways, I scrolled through and saw an anime that looked very interesting. I clicked on it and my goodness. Just the opening of the anime alone had me dropped jaw and confused but I had to finish it. I saw that it was a school life type show and I've never seen an anime that revolved around High school life. I know that Azumanga diaoh is quite the eccentric anime, but it taught me quite a bit and helped me with my homesickness. I made a variety of friends. Similar to how Chiyo became friends with people she'd never thought she'd have especially for her age and reputation. I even had a friend similar to Sakaki, she was very athletic, Tom boy-ish, and always went head over heels for cute things. Especially puppies ^ω^ . I felt like this anime was the perfect representation of how my high school life would be as a new student, especially in a place where they do things differently. I met loads of people, ran into daily faces, and did things that I'd never imagine myself doing. Most of the time just randomly having fun. Whether it was a prank, whether it was playing spy in the hallways or just plain stupid ideas that were harmless and never got us in trouble. I'd always use to say that I'd love my life to be like an anime, but looking back, I guess it already has been like an anime lol.
I know, 4 years has passed, but Imma leave a comment here. I enjoyed this anime and even made friends because of it. I overheard some classmates talk about Azumanga Daioh... and I was actually drawing Chiyo-chan. They noticed, they talked to me, and did some JoJo poses at me with the "OH MY GOD" sound effect... Even today, I still don't understand why they did the poses... A coincidence that made me have valuable friends today.
The manga is definitely worth reading. The gags are wonderful and reading this was the only time a written story made me laugh out loud. I read it after watching the anime and it was still great.
This series is amazing. A masterpiece. It's the series that made me fall in love for this kind of non-sense comedy. And as always, amazing is your review :D OH MY GAAAAAAAAH!
I like when you put jokes and such in your videos Ark, I also enjoy when you ramble at times, its rather cute. Perhaps I simply like the sound of your voice, who knows.
Daily lives of high school boys! Daily lives of high school boys! Daily lives of high school boys! Daily lives of high school boys! Daily lives of high school boys!
One of your best reviews for an anime that I have seen so far. Your enthusiasm shows and your explanations are detailed and accurate. I recommend School Rumble as a companion anime to Azumanga Daioh.
+Satin Evans That ending has to be THE most satisfying ending I have ever watched. Another anime with that ending done right would be the Wagnaria series and the great expectation breaker (IMO!) of Kanon 2006. :)
I'm so glad to have bought it ages ago after Hope's review of the show (though I have gotten a European release with the English, Japanese and German dubs, the latter of which is also amazing and my favorite). Azumanga Daioh really just is wonderful and I'm happy you've come around to review it and spread the love ^^
the quality of your reviews continue to grow better and better. i admire an artist that continuously strives for improvement. keep up the good work arkada and ill keep watching!
The show is incredibly funny and entertaining, yet can also be really melancholy in a thoughtful way - and all of that while being very over the top at times ! I attribute this to the interesting, "3-dimensional" characters and the very down-to-earth presentation of the show. All in all, it's a cult classic for all the right reasons !
Completely agree, I can't remember the last time I was so invested in an anime. Also Hype for this Saturday (Sunday for me actually) so far I have actually been right about several things and I'm hoping I have the identity of the 7th right as well.
i literally would never watched this show (and many others that i now have come to love) if it werent for your reviews. but it looks super funny and ur recommendations are gold esp certified frosty! im gunna give it a watch, thanks ark!
It just was announced 2 days ago that Sentai Filmworks picked up the license and sill be releasing it on video...eventually. As someone who only has watched this as of last month, this excites me. :) Great review as usual btw. :)
This was a fairly early series in my anime career. I saw it while I was in high school, along with Lucky Star and Haruhi. I've seen this series and Lucky Star in their entirety at least 3 times end to end each. Above all others, Azumanga Daioh is what i consider the archetype for slice of life anime in my generation. I have also watched many more since, though Acchi Kocchi comes to mind as a particular recommendation.
well i watched it. And man did i love it. it was the same feeling from Non Non Biyori i just loved how simple it was only in this it was a funny. Especially the last few episode i was laughing so much. 10/10 loved it. was gonna give it a 9 because it didnt feel like a 10 but after more thought i decided to do it
I saw this series first in my junior or senior year of High School and it was probably one of the most fun non-Shonen or non-supernatural action-oriented anime that I had ever seen. I found it funny and witty. Some aspects of it make me think relatable teen Excel Saga. Have you considered reviewing Nerima Daikon Brothers?
nice review! I've known Azumanga Daioh for years, but just by fame and memes (I think it has some of the most ancient memes on the internet xD) but never watched it till some days ago. And Damn It, now I wish it was longer XD Very enjoyable series. Ah one thing about the 4koma made me reflect, in the end it's not at all so different by how many western comics in the format of strips (like the ones on newspapers etc) are structured, tbh. As a italian dude, what you described about it describes quite accurate many strips of comics like Sturmtruppen or Lupo Alberto etc... (I wonder if these names will say something to someone who isn't italian, tbh xD) or more widely known, for things like Calvin and Hobbes
Great review & I recommend after watching this to look up Gift Daioh & Web Daioh, which I'm surprised that GR didn't mention. Nobody's perfect, but I thank him for giving it a great review! Another anime that turns it up to 11 is School Rumble ;)
Azumanga Daioh was in the first anime dvd order I ever made (Along with Fruits Basket and Please Teacher) and it's one of the best purchases I ever made. Only show I've seen more times is Cromartie HIgh School. Madman in Australia still have Azumanga Daioh licensed. Cromartie has lapsed :( and Madman has Nichijou which I have overlooked in the past but considering picking up now.
If you can't find something legally, this basically gives you a hall pass to go find it illegally, as otherwise you simply can't find it. To quote the great Dr. Malcolm: "Life...will find a way~"
Rephiam As far as I'm concerned, it does. If there's literally no legal means of getting something, then the only alternative is illegal. Just as if, after you have eliminated everything impossible, whatever is left, however unlikely, must be the truth.
Brandy Mckee Sure, if you want to generalize, that's exactly how criminals think. Most criminals, in this case thieves, target a product or commodity that is readily available through a multitude of different legal avenues. For example, food. It's readily available at a multitude of different locations, all of them legal vendors that are licensed to carry said product. What I'm referring to is a product that cannot be obtained through legal means. Whether you are willing to admit it or not, there is a difference. Btw, your eagerness to see the world in black and white is simply _adorable_ .
Am I the only one here who hopes Arkada makes a review about Urasawa Naoki's Monster? It's a masterpiece and may even reach his list of "anime you should watch at some point in your life before you die", it even caught HBO's attention!
I'm surprised you never brought up the Yukari-mobile when you talked about Yukari herself since it's such an iconic thing about the series and one of the best jokes XD
+javelinmaster2 In the absence of Arkada I might be able to help with that. Amazon.co.uk. has a lot of anime, decent pricing and short delivery rates as long as you order from the UK. US orders are more troublesome but also a fair bit cheaper and do eventually make it to your doorstep. Just not always in prime condition so beware of that. Otherwise Archonia specializes in anime and manga sales with usualy exceedingly good delivery rates and orders always arriving in prime condition. On the other hand they are a good deal more expensive than Amazon. Lastly, in my experiences, gamestores also frequently carry anime so if you have one in your direct vacinnity it might be worth checking that out. Though the chances of finding the exact show you were looking for are pretty slim and finding it for a good price are almost non-existant. Still I got lucky one time so it might work. Those are your best bets for picking up anime here in Europe as far as I know.
tardifan thank you for the advice. See I live in holland and due to licensing issues I cannot watch anime on Crunchyroll. So it's good to know that I can still legally acquire Anime.
+javelinmaster2 Well I also live in Holland so the options I listed as well as the pros and cons of each should naturally also apply to you As fr Chrunchyroll. They did actually make a few shows available for legal streaming in Europe. I don;t have the complete list but the ones I know of are Aldnoah.Zero, Parasyte - The Maxim and Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet but they have about fifty shows or so available for legal streaming this side of the atlantic so it's worth checking that out as well. Btw: I just wanna say it's awesome you want to watch anime legally. And hopefully you'll have as much fun collecting it is I do. Streaming is all well and good but for me nothing beats having a whole shelf full of anime.
Azumanga Daioh is certainly unique and though I don't normally watch this genre, THIS is one of my favourite anime. Those long pauses never seize to amuse and the characters are brilliant. I'm surprised you give no mention of Lucky Star, which I consider similar and another one of my favourites. And AMV Hell 3... that certainly is a memorable piece.
I can attest to Nichijou being a highly enjoyable experience. I got lucky and found it on DVD at a con last year. Its crazy, its fun and I highly recommend it
Thanks for reviewing this! I also heard about this from AMV Hell... but still haven't managed to follow up and watch it. On a related note, have you watched "School Rumble"?
I bought this anime back in 2008 at Afest in Texas and never opened it. It's still in the original plastic. I am so glad I've kept this all these years ^_^
Dude I've been watching all your reviews and you are the man because I am picky about anime I watch and I can't emphasize that enough but I just wanted to suggest one I just started watching Bento 🍱 and thought you could do one of your first reactions I enjoy the first episode so far that's as far as I've gone but much thanks for the suggestions
Azumanga Daioh (great anime) taught me that "cooking is so fun, cooking is so fun, now it's time to take a break and see what we have done". From what I understand the anime was started as an independent and grew into popularity. I did like the English dub for this, mostly for Osaka. There are some dvd's available for rent from netflix atm. Can not wait for a GR review of "Prison School".
I have good news! Sentai Filmworks has gained the rights to this show, and will be releasing the DVD soon. You can pre-order it off Amazon.com or the official Sentai Filmworks website for about 49 dollars.
I was on episode 20 when this video uploaded. I just had to finish the rest of the episodes to watch this. I also bought and read the manga before watching the anime as well so I kind of knew the anime had that 4-koma nature to it. Plus I wouldn't worry too much about Nichijou, I think the manga is going to be release in the spring of next year.
Thank you for making this review. Your endorsement of this abandoned show has made me decide to get a hold of it again. I watched this show as it was first being fansubbed back in 2002 and a lot of the jokes clearly didn't make it through the translation then, because I thought it wasn't as funny as others later said it to be. From everything that I've read and from what you've said about the dub, the final English translation used on the DVD is much better. Also, you're right - the horrible, horrible awesomeness of the male teacher is ineffable and amazing. It comes across even through a bad translation. After you reminded me of Azumanga Daioh's existence, the 13-year-old memory of falling off my chair at something he said or did is what made me search it out and obtain for myself a purely digital copy of it (legal in DVD Region 1, BTW). Also something which has stuck with me for 13 years: that one Osaka chick determinedly watching a floater meander around in her eye while the classroom explodes around her in frenetic activity. Or was it just that one hyper chick just being so hyper that she breaks the laws of physics and quantumly entangle herself so as to appear at multiple places in the room at once. If I remember her character (and they are all very memorable), it's something she's probably capable of doing. Thanks for reminding me of a show I had utterly forgotten and was never able to properly appreciate.
its always nice to see another person who has a warm spot for azumanga daioh like I do ^_^ I used to watch it every night with my little sisters as a kid on our old DVD player. Ah, the good ol days. This is actually the ONLY anime that has made me cry. And I simply cried because it was over XD
Will you do Non Non Biyori? It's a series in the 2010s that is not like any other series at all. It has a great balance of comedy, and reality check. Also, it completely sets in a rural area.
YES Azumanga Daioh! You did a review! It's my favorite comedy and damn I dont lie when I say I gabe it 9/10. But where did you buy tye anime? I've been looking for it for years without finding it.
I really loved how detailed you made this review without giving away major plot-points and from having said show that gives little to describe. I.E. No climax action scenes, big reveal or anything. It's just a comedic slice of life story about making friends, high school, growing up. Fun fact: This was my first Anime - Slice of Life series.
just started watching this show as I've been a fan of anime for 5 years and still haven't seen in (Its been on my list fo a while) then this came out and I think its summed up my initial reaction to the show, however I will check out the dub. Thanks Ark, great videos as always :)
2 Notes: 1) I was also introduced to this series via AMV Hell - same clip too. I loved it so much XD 2) ...Alas, most of the 'fun' things do in fact happen in high school. There's also college, but after/during college, they have to get down to the 12 hour work days and starting families and what not. Just things I've noted living here ^^;;
I don't think our dear host is going to read this so I address it to you and I tell you; this crazy anime reviewer is the shit, the quality in his videos, the effort attached to each review and the way he so clearly and precisely describes each anime with his, lets say, soothing and emphatic voice makes him a person worthy of admiration and someone who deserves mine and your respect. I thank you for reading.
The best moment in Azumanga Daioh was when there was a conversation like this:
"how can we keep our school cleaner?"
"By not showing up."
That is honestly the best line! XD
Best line was
"Harru everynyan"
"How are you? Fine thank you"

(I wonder if these names will say something to someone who isn't italian, tbh xD) or more widely known, for things like Calvin and Hobbes
You are so awesome, I unsubscribed to you just to subscribe to you again!
+TheLejonell that's loyalty lol
Great review & I recommend after watching this to look up Gift Daioh & Web Daioh, which I'm surprised that GR didn't mention. Nobody's perfect, but I thank him for giving it a great review! Another anime that turns it up to 11 is School Rumble ;)
It got picked up everybody! Azumanga got Licensed! They're re-releasing it!!!
Malcolm: "Life...will find a way~"
+sergeantassassin3 No it doesn't. You can wait, or watch another.
Rephiam As far as I'm concerned, it does. If there's literally no legal means of getting something, then the only alternative is illegal. Just as if, after you have eliminated everything impossible, whatever is left, however unlikely, must be the truth.
+sergeantassassin3 Wow that's exactly how criminals think.
Btw, your eagerness to see the world in black and white is simply _adorable_ .
sergeantassassin3
Ok. You can rationalize it all you want.
Am I the only one here who hopes Arkada makes a review about Urasawa Naoki's Monster? It's a masterpiece and may even reach his list of "anime you should watch at some point in your life before you die", it even caught HBO's attention!
Wow I thought that arkada would've reviewed this by now.
OMG THANK YOU THIS HAS BEEN THE REVIEW IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO MAKE SIINCE I FIRST SUBSCRIBED OVER A YEAR AGO.
1:56 That cheesy fucking effect. Hahaha, al most died there
I'm surprised you never brought up the Yukari-mobile when you talked about Yukari herself since it's such an iconic thing about the series and one of the best jokes XD
How about a Blue Exorcist review?
O dam, Azumanga is out of print? Now I feel slightly awesome for picking my copy up from a Best Buy about 6 years ago.
hey Arkada i have 1 question.
Do you know how to legally acquire Anime in Europe?
Streaming is all well and good but for me nothing beats having a whole shelf full of anime.
tardifan
yh I will just buy the series that I like once i have ectual room and money for it.
bdw do these anime on DVD also get subbed on the DVD?
tardifan
bdw what do you think of the TTP?
Azumanga Daioh is certainly unique and though I don't normally watch this genre, THIS is one of my favourite anime. Those long pauses never seize to amuse and the characters are brilliant. I'm surprised you give no mention of Lucky Star, which I consider similar and another one of my favourites. And AMV Hell 3... that certainly is a memorable piece.
Please do a review on Nichijou, pretty please! X3
Yeah, I was about to comment to do it. I really really want you to!
I can attest to Nichijou being a highly enjoyable experience. I got lucky and found it on DVD at a con last year. Its crazy, its fun and I highly recommend it
Who is the best Azumanga waifu and why is it Osaka?
Thanks for reviewing this! I also heard about this from AMV Hell... but still haven't managed to follow up and watch it. On a related note, have you watched "School Rumble"?
*I W I S H I W E R E A B I R D*
This was an excellent video, your explanation of the animes' relation to the monga was my favorite part.
The show's getting redistributed by Sentai Filmworks.
Dude the editing in this video was great!
Now if only a certain green haired girl could get an anime Id be the happiest man in the world.
+Aaron Gant neliel?
Yotsuba?
+Senpai Filmworks nailed it.
the whole time I was watching, I had nichijou in the back of my mind. glad to see it in recommended. great vid.
HAAROOO EVERYNYAN HOYAYU? FINE TANK YUUU
I bought this anime back in 2008 at Afest in Texas and never opened it. It's still in the original plastic. I am so glad I've kept this all these years ^_^
Not to be mean, but you make me so self aware that I paused the video and went to brush my teeth.
The Azumanga omnibus was the first manga I ever bought! And it's awesome!
omg you found out about it the same way I did. 😲
dat faic
Dude I've been watching all your reviews and you are the man because I am picky about anime I watch and I can't emphasize that enough but I just wanted to suggest one I just started watching Bento 🍱 and thought you could do one of your first reactions I enjoy the first episode so far that's as far as I've gone but much thanks for the suggestions
You should have recommended lucky star
"It's not Yotsuba&"...
Feeling extra cheeky today aren't we Arkada?
"The dub is spot on." HAH
- also, is his hair half-dyed or something?
I think it's the lighting.
+SkyflyNB i'm surprised he wasn't bothered by Osaka's dub voice. For her, changing the voice changes the character, I say
It his opinion, at least respect it
+lozganon64 I. LOVE. Osaka's dub voice.
Dude, the voices for the subbed version are spot on. I couldn't imagine listening to it in English.
CHRISTOPHER NOLAN MAKING THE AKIRA MOVIE!!!!!
Oh god 😨
That would be fucking awesome
Oh my god, this is resl and first time glad to have a reboot!
To all you people who listen to dubbed anime... How do you live with yourself knowing everyday you're basically bleeding out of your ears?
+Nick D It feels pretty good, actually. Is that the answer you were looking for?
Damn sub-purists...
Bro, it's kinda like puking when you're sober Vs. puking when you're drunk. If that clears anything up.
I love how in the verdict one of the minor points is that "It's not Yotsuba&!" Simply Brilliant xD
School rumble
Man that was great, its one of my favorite shows and you nail the review
I've been waiting for this review! One of my favorite anime's of all time, it was the first one I ever watched.
You have no idea how happy I was to see Azumanga Daioh Review in my sub box! One of my favorite comedies! Nichijou takes the cake, though.
2 Notes:
1) I was also introduced to this series via AMV Hell - same clip too. I loved it so much XD
2) ...Alas, most of the 'fun' things do in fact happen in high school. There's also college, but after/during college, they have to get down to the 12 hour work days and starting families and what not. Just things I've noted living here ^^;;
I don't think our dear host is going to read this so I address it to you and I tell you; this crazy anime reviewer is the shit, the quality in his videos, the effort attached to each review and the way he so clearly and precisely describes each anime with his, lets say, soothing and emphatic voice makes him a person worthy of admiration and someone who deserves mine and your respect. I thank you for reading.
