    The reason for the coconuts is because the film's budget wasn't high enough for them to rent horses. Also, only one of them knew how to ride, so they just used coconuts. Also, they rented one castle, and whenever they needed to portray a new castle, they'd film it from different angles and different sides. This movie was really made on a shoestring.

      It's less that they ran out of money and more that an ending like that might have come right out of their TV show from the early '70s. They would string together a lot of unrelated sketches and abruptly jump to the next one, often with Terry Gilliam's animation in between, when the joke stopped being funny. "Holy Grail" was a first try at something with a more linear narrative but it still plays like a bunch of sketches. As others have said, their next movie "Life of Brian" goes even farther toward a more traditional narrative structure. Watching reactors come to terms with the guys' shenanigans is VERY entertaining.

    Monty Python can be an acquired taste. It grows on you, until you get how absolutely hilarious, intelligent and inane their humor is. They had a sketch show in England called Monty Python's Flying Circus which prepped America for their humor. It was shown on PBS, pre-internet age, and it felt like you had discovered a quirky, irreverent hidden treasure. I think the end of the movie was due to their sketch style background. It was very different to experience them slowly, starting with the TV show. The Pythons were young and popular back then. Many fans memorized full dialog to their sketches and songs, and recited them back and forth to each other. I'm sure it's hard to digest this movie with no context and not much exposure to British humor (?) Thanks for trying though.

    • @Hexon66
      @Hexon66 Před rokem +2

      Monty Python was always hit and miss. That’s what made them interesting. There’s plenty of stuff that is high brow and intelligent (I’d say the philosophers football would be one), and other just plain dumb fun (the black knight, say). If you’re not in the mood for it, A lot of people would react like Jay and Amber. Python fans have built up this unrealistic image of their genius. And Flying Circus got repetitive, really fast. There’s nothing intrinsically difficult about understanding British humor, it’s often just so mundane that you can’t believe the effort that was put into it. Kinda like how Penn Gillette explains magic tricks.

    The genius behind this film is that they are 100% breaking the 4th wall, breaking character and quite literally letting you in on the joke.
    The idea to use coconuts for horses was a genius budgetary decision.
    The part that seems to be beyond your capacity to relate, is they are pointing out this is nothing more than a set with actors.
    (Hence things like the cop cars, the Historian and the animator dying suddenly, and freeing them from the beast that would likely have killed them)
    Thereby completely pulling the audience out of the idea of the fantasy world they have created.
    That’s Monty Python for you.

    In case no one else has mentioned it, this movie was basically a full-length movie version of a British sketch comedy show called "Monty Python's Flying Circus". The show was made up of short sketches that used the same kind of surreal, ridiculous, satirical humor as this (think Saturday Night Live but, more British). "The Holy Grail" was the group trying for the first time to take their style of humor and extend it into a full-length original story (based on the legend of King Arthur). ❤

    As others have pointed out, the Pythons were all extremely well educated at Oxford and Cambridge comedians and their humor, while often seeming nonsensical or tangental, draws heavily from historical and literary source material. The scenes of collecting the dead during the Black Plague or the witch trial are pretty close to the way it happened. You just have to laugh because it's so horribly accurate. Their next movie, The Life of Brian, has a more definite ending. You might try that one some time.

    • @karlmortoniv2951
      @karlmortoniv2951 Před rokem +10

      To underline the historical accuracy, one of the directors (Terry Jones, the guy who played Sir Bedivere and a bunch of other characters) was a medieval scholar. He published several books on the Crusades and other things and hosted history specials on British TV. The 'your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries' thing was a historically accurate insult from medieval times. Hamsters were very 'prolific' and had loads of sex and made lots of little hamsters - poor people didn't have access to grapes, which were a rich people food imported from abroad, so they would ferment other things to make alcoholic beverages, like elderberries. So the insult translates as, 'your mamma's a ho and your daddy's a drunk.' Monty Python is educational. :)

      Phew. No wonder people just use a simple variant of "bang to rights!" instead!

      Part of the excess violence is a jab at the different censorship and ratings standards for different subjects. For example, you can show people's heads getting severed, a cart full of dead bodies, a sword thru the face, and a dude having all four limbs hacked off, but don't you DARE let anyone see a boobie!
      Also sometimes movie makers desire a certain rating, for example this one would likely sell more tickets with an R rating. So if there wasn't enough violence for the judges to give it that rating, then the producers could decide if they want to add more violence to bump the rating up to where they want before the release.

    The Monty Python Group was radically different back in the 70's. Only expect craziness from them, as you can tell by the insertion of whacky cartoons and the abrupt, non-nonsensical ending. Don't expect to follow a story from start to finish, these are basically a mish-mash of sketches. Similar to 'Airplane', these are not normal movies so don't expect a plot. The only reason they do anything is for a laugh, and often not for any particular rational reasoning! Glad you enjoyed it, it is a classic.

      "Life of Brian" is a little closer to a traditional movie. I mean, it's still not a "normal movie" but it def feels a little less disjointed and therefore might be a little more palatable to J&A as MP noobs.

    My friends and I had seen this many times and then watched it with a Belgian exchange student. She cracked up laughing when the French turned back and said something in French to the others behind the wall. We paused the movie to see what was so funny. She said that he had just said to "throw the cow" and she had no idea what he was talking about but, thought it was funny. We resumed the movie with us knowing what was coming and she broke up laughing again when the cow came flying at them. Made a funny screen just a bit better and always makes me laugh when I think about it. Keep up the good work!

    Monty Python are a purveyor of the "theatre of the absurd." First time I saw this, I was only 11 or12, on Public TV. Skip some years, around the time after i graduated high school, a friend of mine and I, whenever we got together, watched this over and over... we did this for SEVERAL YEARS. We watched it so much, we quoted the movie verbatim ALL the time, especially when circumstances in real life led us to moments to respond with a line from the movie. One day, after a millionth reference to the movie, we looked at each other at the same time and said to each other, "think it's times for us to stop watching it." (as well as forcing ourselves to NOT repeat lines from it anymore... )

      I love MP but I’ve never liked this movie. Absolutely watch Life of Brian though. It has a story line, the humour is within and relevant to the plot, and it lacks the blood and gore. When it was first released, some churches - without seeing it - thought that it was mocking Christ, and banned people from watching it.

    another fun fact:
    most of the actors played several roles each. in particular John Cleese as the taunting frenchman and sir lancelot, and Graham Chapman as king arthur and God. the main cast played at least... 3-4 characters each. sometimes in the same scene. their dedication to their craft is amazing.

    I loved this film; the cops breaking up the fight was foreshadowed throughout the film; the narrator standing in the field already broke the reality of the setting, so his murder being investigated was a running visual subplot/sight gag; the arrests were inevitable.

      Also, the ending is a pun. Instead of showing the huge battle and having Arthur complete his quest for the grail, thereby wrapping up the threads of the story and delivering on all the build up, the filmmakers chose to "cop out."

    This is one of my all time favorite movies. I always love hearing how many people think they were arrested for killing the narrator, however the murder was on a horse, the only horse in the movie. It’s something overlooked by many. Also, at the end, the other gem to it is that it literally ends on a Cop Out.
