This is a tragic tale of police profiling and false arrest. Arthur and his men could not have killed the historian, as the killer had a real horse.
We know it had to be the French. They were the only ones around with livestock.

This is a movie that you either “get” the humor or you don’t. But if you do get it. It’s flipping hilarious. Each scene can be done as it’s own “skit”. It’s great.

I remember watching Monty Python's Flying Circus back in the late 70s on the local PBS affiliate. Yeah, you either get it or you don't. Complaint Department, Dead Parrot, Git of the Year, Department of Redundancy Department...
Totally agree. I find it absolutely brilliant and it has been one of my favourites for years. I've got some friends who have loved it and others who just don't get it at all.
It's one is my favorite movies but I Hated it the first time I saw it. The only reason I watched it past the credits was because I payed to rent it.... But I had to force myself to go back to it.
After a cpl years I was talking to someone and he pointed out a couple of things and convinced me to rewatch it... idk who that person was but I think of that convo every time i watch it.
I guess I got it when I was 15 but I don't seem to get it at 40.
Exept when sir Lancelot is running towards the castle, but he doesn't get any closer, until he is suddenly there.
That is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Whomever did that editing should be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

You hit it on the head when you said they were ahead of their time! Monty Python was built different! Nobody can even come close to the level of comedy they crafted over and over again.

It’s refreshing to find someone who actually gets the humor in this movie. British humor is very different than American humor. Monty Python were an amazing troupe of actor/comedians.
"Your father smelt of elderberries!" The French knight is essentially calling Arthur's father a drunkard. In medieval times, many alcoholic beverages were made from the elderberry. And if there is anyone out there that can taunt someone, especially in a stream of consciousness manner, it would be John Cleese, the actor who played the French knight and Sir Lancelot. He's hilarious.
And I love the cop out ending. They literally and figuratively ended the movie with a double entendre. It was chiefly because of two things: 1) the Pythons didn't know how to end it and 2) they ran out of the funds to film a conclusive ending. Such a clever and original movie. The Monty Python comedy troupe were ahead of their time.
I love that you seem to understand their type of comedy so, on your own time, I would highly recommend you watch their BBC comedy show "Monty Python's Flying Circus." That show has some of the funniest and most hilariously surreal comedy that has ever been broadcast over the air waves. I very much doubt you'd be disappointed at all.

I read a comment once claiming that the insults are actually fairly accurate for the time period, at least in meter and style. The words are modern, but the equivalent words for the time would have fit well. I'm not sure whether I believe it or not, but the Pythons were all highly educated so it's possible.
"I wave my private parts at your aunties!" is such an awesome burn. I still use it to this day when gaming with friends. This movie has so many quotable moments in it. So glad you got around to doing it 🙌. Monty Pythons Life of Brian is great too, about a guy who is mistaken for the Messiah back in Roman times.

i love the whole lanceolot scene. the father and guards arguing about who stays is funny as hell. but after lanceolot runs up and kills the first guard and the other one just goes "hey" funny ass movie.
The guard saying "hey" gets me everytime. It's so soft many people miss it.

of their time. Their absurd humor is top notch and it's a shame they only did 3 movies before Graham passed.
For some Python adjacent movies (two or more former Pythons) - A Fish Called Wanda, Erik The Viking, and much of the work of Terry Gilliam (co-director/Patsy/Old Man from Scene 24), which is a whole other list of great movies to watch. Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen form a loose thematic trilogy and are a great place to start his work.
2 movies really, the third is just a few of their skits redone.
You mention A Fish Called Wanda but don't forget it's spiritual successor, Fierce Creatures, with almost the same cast.
Brazil is one of my favorite movies. DO NOT WATCH THE CRAPPY HAPPY ENDING VERSION.
A coworker of mine from Brazil watched this movie after I told him about it. He said the bureaucracy depicted in the movie was a true reflection of the state of Brazil in the 1980s, including getting forms stamped.
Also Graham Chapman's Yellowbread which also has some other Python members as well as some of Mel Brooks crew of actors and Cheech and Chong.

Your reaction to the Black Knight and the ending was the best I've seen. Most people stare at the black screen utterly bemused and disappointed but you got the "let's pull the rug out from under the audience for our own amusement" vibe. I love WTH endings. The movie Birdy had a great one where you think the title character commits suicide by jumping off the roof of a building only to reveal he's only a few feet down on the roof of an adjoining building.

I described the ending's *SPOILER ALERT* black screen, something to which most movie's fade at the end, and *SPOILER ALERT* the filmmakers pulling the rug out from under the audience, a trait in almost all Monty Python movies and sketches. If you were joking about the vagueness being a spoiler, my apologies for responding to it as if it was a rebuttal and bravo for the early morning laugh.

So many reactors were PISSED when they realized there was no payoff at the end. No Holy Grail, just mass arrests and most likely a murder charge.
It was the PERFECT ending to a nearly perfect film.

This is probably my favourite comedy film. I first saw it at 17, and I've never laughed so hard. There are SO many hilarious moments and lines.
Please consider TIME BANDITS (1982). It stars the Monty Python cast, James Bond, Bilbo, and R2D2
the intermission thing is, back then, movies had intermissions so ppl would go to the bathroom and stuff. that intermission was made short and right before the end of the movie on purpose. just long enough for ppl to get up and go to the bathroom but short enough that ppl would miss the ending coz they werent back in time. its hilarious
British humor is next level. Really happy that you could appreciate it. You would really enjoy all of Monty Python's stuff.

I loved the "coconut" conversation(s), the "song of Sir Robin", the Black Night scene and the "Bridge of Death" scene the most. Now, I want to tell you to not feel bad about the "going on the cart" scene ... EVERY reactor seems to have not learned about that part of history in school, or don't pick up on it when they see the scene but, there was a plague all over Europe back then (it really happened between 1346 and 1351, NOT in 932.AD) called, The Black Plague.
FYI, when it hit, so many people were dying all at once that the only way to dispose of the bodies is to put them on carts, haul them away and burn them, en masse. Unfortunately, it's what really made the plague worse, because the germs were NOT killed by fire and just became airborne, making it even worse than it already was. Anyway, THAT is what that scene was referring to.

Never thought in my lifetime, someone would bring up R Kelly and someone smelling of old turtle balls in a Monty Python film but here we are. Funny thing is "killer rabbit" is a recurring character in Medieval artwork; sometimes posing as a lancer in human armor, and other times sniping fools with a longbow.
Between that and the Frenchman's period-accurate trash-talking, this film is more historically rooted than it lets on

We can all use a little bit of this silliness in our lives.
These boys were geniuses. Before this movie they had the TV Show, Monty Python's Flying Circus. As they were planning out the final season and trying to work on a fallow up movie idea, they suddenly noticed the returning final season bit of Arthur and the Holy Grail would actually play better as the movie. So as the final episodes were going out, the boys were looking up locations, and finding out despite having a higher budget, they still needed to cut things, in the end gave up on hiring horses for the film, making locations for a couple of decent sized castles possible to film at. Did so well, they made at least 2 more films before also going into solo film careers in the mid 80's, and time and again having some fun cameo work with each other. They lost a few members over the years, but were always up for a reunion run when it came up, and always kept in touch.
I'll never grow tired of watching Monty Python.❤

The trivia on this movie is just UNBELIEVABLE! There’s just too much of it.; from the actual historical references to the reasons they filmed the way they did.
I’ll just drop the one: the screamed “Run away” because it’s set before the French conquered England. The French word “retreat” hadn’t entered the language yet.
A fair number of people who watch this ending for the 1st time, get angry, upset & disappointed. They cant get past not knowing what happens, or rather, not getting a traditionally happy conclusion to the story / quest for the grail. Python is just fucking with the audience & it's beautiful!

Fun fact: it used to be very common to have the credits at the start of the film. It wasn't until the late 60s that they started putting them at the end. It was a way to make sure everyone was acknowledged for their effort, not just the stars, the director, and producers. As film making became more advanced and complicated they needed larger crews (making the credits longer), so now it just makes to have them always put to the end because otherwise it would be too time consuming for audiences. When this film was made, credits at the beginning was still normal.
the latin chant you hear the monks doing, and Arthur's clergymen do during the reveal of the Holy Hand Grenade is an excerpt from the Dies Irae which goes "Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem" which pretty much translates to "Dear Lord Jesus, please give us a break", which fits the purpose.
The third question asked of Sir Robin was “WHAT is the capital of Assyria?” The answer is Nineveh (where God sent Jonah). Today the city is known as Mosul, Iraq.

I have probably watched this movie fifty times and it never gets old. It has got to be one of the funniest movies of all time. I really enjoyed your reaction and I am glad you liked it. I can recite some of the scenes word for word.
The French called him "Arthur, King" and then called the knights (he pronounced it funny, treating the "K" like a separate syllable, which the French often do, and then did something similar with the multiple consonants at the end, so Knights came out like) "Ken-Nig-its". It took me YEARS to realize what he was saying.
I didn't see anyone else mention this, so I will ... they ran out of ideas so, the end of the movie is a literal "cop-out".

Fun fact: Eric Idle when playing the guy who's picking up dead people is asked by John Cleese's character as Arthur is "galloping" along, "Who's that then?" Idle's response "Don't know, must be a king." Cleese asks "Why"? Idle's response, "Cause he hasn't got shit all over him." That was completely ad libbed

Those guys were legitimately ahead of their time. The word PYTHONESQUE is in the dictionary because of them.
The same handful of guys wrote the screenplay and also played many different parts. Michael Palin for instance played the innocent Sir Galahad and also the Constitutional Peasant who accused King Arthur of oppressing him. The filthy woman with him (Terry Jones) was also Sir Bedevere and the young man in Swamp Castle who just wanted to sing. John Cleese was Sir Lancelot, the French insulter, and the sorcerer named Tim.
This was essentially an expanded version of their amazing TV series, Monty Python's Flying Circus.

If you like this movie, and it seems you really "got" its style of humor, you should check out Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life" (1983). It has the same sense of humor, but is more "segmented" into thematic sketches like their television series "Monty Python's Flying Circus".

As a first-time viewer, "shut the fuck up" is the most handy response to every passing moment. Monty Python did everything in their power to be silly. And it worked.
I lol:ed so hard at the R. Kelly joke 🤣 It's the gang themselves who wrote this movie - Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones & Terry Gilliam. The ones who directed were Gilliam & Jones.
They all have background in theatre & comedy (Gilliam mostly had background in art, he's the one who made these funny cartoon segments & he's the only American in this British group) & in the 60's they had a sketch sitcom show called Monty Python's Flying Circus.
This was their 1st movie together, their 2nd movie was Life of Brian & their 3rd & last movie together was Meaning of Life. Graham Chapman (King Arthur) died in 1989 & three years ago Terry Jones (Sir Bevedere & Prince Herbert) passed away.

The reason for the coconauts is because they couldn't afford more horses. Three well known music bands actually contributed to this movie's budget - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd & Genesis.
