Fiat Panda 4x4 Proto Racing on Snow! The Ice Challenge Livigno 2021

  • The first generation of the Fiat Panda (or 'Pandino' for us Italians, which can be translated into 'little Panda') has simply become a kind of myth over the years here in Italy. A great multitude of curious, funny and 'heroic' anecdotes have been written, said and, nowdays, even recorded about this A-segment car, which have increased its fame. And most of us Italians have somehow spent some time on its seats: maybe because it was his own car, maybe because one of their relatives or friends owned/still own one.
The Panda was unveiled in 1980 and placed itself in a middle way between the 126 and the 127, in Fiat's model range. It was designed by Giugiaro and at first it featured only a 650cc air-cooled 2-cylinder engine and a 900cc water-cooled 4-cylinder engine. In 1983 the Austrian company Steyr-Puch developed a complete four-wheel drive system for the subsequent release of the Panda 4x4. It was the first model of a small transverse engine car to feature a 4WD system and it was equipped with a 965cc 48hp engine. The four-wheel drive was manually selectable, with a reduced first gear (in normal daily driving conditions the second gear was considered as the 1st and the 5th had the same ratio as the 4th in the standard Pandas).
In January 1986, a restyling version was unveiled. The 650cc engine was replaced with a 770cc/34hp one while the 900cc gave way to a 999cc engine with 45hp or 50hp (for the 4x4). Both new engines were the new 4-cylinder, liquid-cooled FIRE family with an overhead camshaft. The limited-edition Panda 4x4 Sisley also belongs to this first restyling. In 1991 a second minor restyling was unveiled, which aimed to further improve the interiors and replace the front grille, similar to the one of the Fiat Tipo. A 1100cc FIRE engine was also introduced and fitted on the 4x4 too. The first generation of the Panda continued to be produced until 2003.
And in this second restyling the Fiat Panda 4x4 you see in this video places itself. I recorded it during the first two rounds of the 2021 The Ice Challenge held at Ice Driving School's circuit in Livigno, Italy. Unfortunately I don't know any spec of this particular Panda, but judging by the sound I'd assume the engine has been modified if not swapped with a 16v or a later FIRE (and modified) engine. Kinda hear also some intake sounds that reminds me of ITBs (Individual Throttle Bodies) at 3:28. Still not a huge amount of power but enough to have fun on snow. Watch it in action on the icy circuit, racing against the clock!

I love this channel. A hair-on-fire V-10 F1 racer one day. A 4x4 Panda on the ice the next day. Something for everyone!
