    I used a TrackIR extensively with both MSFS and X-Plane 10 while training for my PPL 10 years ago. Being able to mimick exactly what I would do in the pattern was immensely helpful for my muscle memory during pattern work and landing. Highly recommend something like this for someone who likes to do a lot of VFR in sims to supplement real-world flying. Being able to look out the window at specific points, coupled with some form of photo-realistic scenery, is extremely useful when prepping for cross-country flights.

    To be quite honest, a lot of us have bought the tobii eye tracker but have shelved it because of one feature that is absent for MSFS, and that is the ability to have the view frozen in place when paused, like we have in TrackIR. You look at the CDU to configure some settings, and you pause the camera and the view "graciously" returns to forward rather than remaining as you froze it. Now this feature is available in game hub which DCS uses, as it is not natively supported by Tobii, but MSFS and others that are natively supported do not have it. This is a serious dealbreaker. I'll stay with TrackIR until this feature is available.

    • @pi.actual
      @pi.actual Před 4 měsíci +1

      True but it hasn't caused me to "shelve" it and I think the onus is on Microsoft because they don't allow the option of using Game Hub to control the settings. It works great in DCS. MSFS does have an auto- recenter ON/OFF slider in the sensitivity settings but it doesn't seem to do anything.

    I really wish tobii would build in to it a pause function. When programming the FMC etc, the slightest head or eye movement causes issues when clicking on the LSKs etc, by turning it off momentarily puts you back in the captain view. TrackIR does have a pause, so imo is better for airliners. Nice video, merry Christmas.

    How is the stability and responsiveness?
    I have a TrackIR 5, which has lower latency on paper, but the eye tracking seems like a really interesting addition. That being said, I want precise tracking and low latency when flying in DCS and I’ve heard the head tracking with Tobii is a little less good than TrackIR.

    Does the game then only render the part that you are looking at in very high resolution and the rest in much lower? That would free up a lot of capacity. Maybe the sharp spot can be even higher resolution than the current max full screen resolution. • @EmissionGaming
    @EmissionGaming Před 4 měsíci

    I bought a Tobii around 4 or 5 years ago, used it a few times when I got it, then haven’t touched it since. I’ve been a TrackIR user for around 15 years, and still it’s one of the best around by a long shot.
    I can understand that people would prefer it over TrackIR as they don’t want to wear some form of sensor on their heads, and that’s fine, each to their own.
    I find though that the real immersion just isn’t there with Tobii as the movements are still pretty static and doesn’t have a great deal of “real movement”, and mainly just feels like “oh this makes it easier” but certainly not immersive. The Head Tracking side of it is also very off and not very natural in feeling, and the biggest downfall is the incredible lack of configuration.
    TrackIR however provides real body movement, such as if my body moves when I’m struggling in a Crosswind, then I will see natural movements within the Game [setting it up the sensitivity though is required as the default has large dead zones in it].
    TrackIR also covers ALL axis of movements, so I can move closer, stick my head out windows, turn my head on the side if I want. Some Tobii Games allow such movements, but again the head movements are not what they focus on, and can be very clunky and most times, not even register the correct movement.
    Either way, both programs are good for certain things, but actual
    Immersion isn’t Tobii’s strong point, and is mainly for convenience and to help the disabled [which was how Tobii first came about].

    Just to get it right: you watch to the left and the view changes, but your monitor (that´s what I call my "TV") don´t move. So your headmovement and the viewmovement do not match, because you would just look beside the monitor... weird idea!

  • @hambone4728
    @hambone4728 Před 4 měsíci +1

    I bought this and returned it. It is not as precise as TrackIR and will not "freeze" your view when you pause the camera, it reverts to a default forward view. Being able to freeze the camera on whatever I want to see and work on in detail is a luxury I've grown accustomed to. The convenience of the Tobii just wasn't enough to outweigh the precision and ability to pause of the Track IR.

    Pause in place and not reset to center…. That would make it a “game changer”. Also, I got the bracket for a small camera tripod. The sticker attachment to the bottom of the monitor failed after 2 months. Great in MSFS because everything is forward. This is worthless in DCS, however. I have never been able to track another plane in a dogfight since it’s terrible looking high and behind at the same time. You loose the opponent plane and that’s kinda a problem. But in MSFS - it’s pretty good.

      It was very subtle. I found I could do most of what I wanted in the cockpit with my eyes alone. If you wanted to look out of the side windows of the cockpit, that required some head movement, but not loads, it’s like it multiplies your head movement to prevent you having to look back at your screen from the corner of your eyes, if that makes sense?

    I've just received my Toboii ET5, but unlike you have spent several hours going round in circles and tearing my hair out!! I've found nothing "simple" about it. It appears to be loaded but there was no link to where it could be found. I went through various sources only to believe I didn't have the drivers, no drivers were available for Win 10, you need the Tobii Hub /you don't need the hub as it's in the sim - but I can't find it in the sim. The setup instructions just go round and round, so trying to get answers is so frustrating. Unfortunately there is no help available locally, and I am housebound (and 76). I've been using MS flight simulator for more than thirty years, but MSFS - although working fine - is no great help when stuck with some downloadsand addons. The Tobii site was even less than helpful. I'd love for someone with some knowhow to sort a couple of these problems for me. Can you help in any way? e.g. how do I get to the initial setup? I'vc tried various .exe locations, but no further. I'm almost ready to chuck the damned thing in the bin!!

      I did it, but to date have had no further response. One would think that when your purchasing something thast isn't cheap, they would send full installation instructions, but apart from a haf-dozen vague symbols on the box, there's nothing about what you need to down load, or what to expect when you install. They don't even tell you what software to install as it's all in the sim (it wasn't in mine). Apparently once you connect the device you go (but how?) to the next stage which is calibration. but it's nowhere in the hundred or so download files. I searched every .exe or application file, found two, but nothing happened. It's a joke, but I'm far from laughing!
      Yes, I;'e checked YT, buyers' experiences, but they''ve all skipped the essential part of how to get into the software. When you check the Tobii web pages they give nothing of use for setting up, and when you view their support pages, there is nothing, but nothing to guide you - it's 99% self promotion of their products and how good they are. As a student pilot in real life, and as someone who has MSFS2020, and a HP Reverb VR headset, my reason for getting the Tobii was to allow me to fly with reasonable immersion, whilst leaving me with full use of my senses for the more physically practical components of flying such as checking nav log, charts…etc for VFR, and obtaining IFR clearances…etc. There’s no doubt that nothing beats VR for immersion; it’s absolutely fantastic, but it proves cumbersome when other actions are required as mentioned above. To be honest, if my PC had enough grunt (it doesn’t), I’d run both.
