Hi - just got mine.
Firstly I couldn't make it work at all. An email to Tobii got a response well within 24 hours and a pointer to what was wrong - I had installed Opentrack. As you say, once uninstalled I was a further step in.
But then I found that it wasn't working consistently, plugging the USB into a powered hub, but perfect when plugged into an onboard USB slot.
Getting my computer out of its hutch, then frigging around to get the cord in was a pain - much appreciation for Tobii's forward thinking by enclosing a USB extension cord with the kit.
Now I love it. Took a little while to calibrate the settings, and video's like this really helped.
So, thanks for posting this video. It really does help.
I've been looking at this for a while and ordered with your link after watching this video. I love the thought of not having appendages on myself just for eye/head tracking. Thanks again for the demo!
Ordered the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 last night.
Looking forward to seeing it in action.
Thanks for hints and tips.
Thanks, just ordered mine with your link!
Great description including the mounting
Have pulled the trigger this morning on this as I feel I need to compare the experience to my Quest 2. I love the, exclude all else, immersion of VR and worry that having the whole of the world outside of my screen might ruin it. Obvious advantage will be the glorious level of detail I will regain running MSFS in pancake mode. Swings and roundabouts.
I have this for a couple of months now and I highly recommend a great piece of gear.
Your review made the difference in purchasing this, so thank you. Ive been skeptical until this point.
I have had this for a few years and love it. With Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 I use it like a head tracker for the main area so when looking down to the instruments it’s steadier than using eye tracking but it will pick up more dramatic eye movements which is great for quick glances down or looking further over my virtual shoulder when I have maxed my head turn. Edit: sometimes I need a double press of the reset button to get the tracker properly centered again, especially after appearing in cockpit from the ready to fly screen.
Yes me too on the centering. I didn't think to mention that. Usually as you said only in the initial start.
@@OverkillSimulations I’m not sure if it’s “centering” but I start out in the back seat. Figured out an up and down on the Alpha HAT switch puts me in the front seat. I’m sure it’s my error somehow. Just got it today and it was as you stated…even for an old retired test pilot. I’ll play with the settings to reduce the movement on instruments. Thank you…
I have a Tobii 4 and love the fact I do not have wires or something on my head to deal with. Might not be as exact as TrackIR but never had a complaint with how it works. Playing Ghost Recon or Arma is pretty cool being able to look around as your moving giving me better situational awareness in game. I also set mine up to auto login to Windows as well. After watching your video I had to pull the trigger on upgrading to the 5. Wife won't be happy, may not get good meals for a while, but it'll be worth it😂
Funny thing. My tobii eye tracker is due to arrive at my house today. Took advantage of the 15% discount.
Fantastic
Really appreciate your input on this product. I've gotten ads for it in the past and always thought, "meh, can't be that great." Now I'll have to give it a shot. I've been using TrackIR for a while, but the added clip on my headphones has always been inconvenient. Time to try something new!
It's definitely nice!! Little odd at first not gonna lie... but after a couple minutes it becomes very natural
Great - bought it just a few days ago - just enough to have missed the 15%...grr. But I really like it!
why during my flight my initial camera point is slowly going up during the descent of the 737, having to press the reset button continuously to return it to its initial state?
Ooh! This will defnitely replace my track ir 5. I really dislike wearing a cap to fly anything with the Track IR.
Do you have a video of you using it with multiple monitors?
You left me behind when you presume the viewer already has track ir.
Really considering this since I wear progressive glasses, so when I tilt my head to focus on something, the regular head tracking obviously sees that as movement. So anyone have any experience with Tobii while using progressive lenses? Maybe minimize the head tracking feature to better utilize the eye tracking itself?
It looks great but the concept confuses me in the sense that... if I turn my head, I'm no longer looking at my screen right? Or am I misunderstanding how this thing works?
I'd bought the version 4 a few years ago and continued to use TrackIR 5 in the meantime since I wasn't a fan of the eye tracking as much, but did just pick version 5 up yesterday. Totally different experience, not perfect, but very comparable to TrackIR with smoothness. Only real negatives I can come up with is that it doesn't work for external view in DCS (maybe MSFS as well?) and no official IL-2 support, so you'll need something like FaceTrackNoIR with a plugin. Or just run in VR for IL-2. Otherwise, yeah no headphone clips or extra wires besides one USB is a big plus.
The primary advantage, and what you pay more for with tobii is the ability to not need headphones while flying. For those who don't like wearing headphones, tobii is a great option. Tobii also has some exclusive contracts with games outside the sim community like Far Cry where tobii is your only option (despite people begging game developers for literally a couple decades for trackir support in those types of games) But you are correct that in terms of shear performance, trackir paired with an aftermarket head unit is still the better performing option in terms of precision, responsiveness and accuracy. It doesn't have eye tracking but for dcs trackir is the way to go. And even if the tracking were equal, the price isn't. Trackir5 plus an aftermarket pro clip is still cheaper than tobii. So for people willing to pay more to get rid of the headphones it's probably worth it if they're exclusively msfs pilots, but for dcs and especially star citizen, trackir is cheaper and performs better.
What size and type monitor do you use
I uninstalled trackir but it still shows up on the control options panel
Anyone know if you Can make this work in iRacing or ACC?
Love my Tobii. I had a hard time buying it when I already had a TrackIR. Both are great but Tobii is on a higher level.
Can i ask what in your opinion or what you might know that makes Tobii better? I ask cause the price difference between the two is almost $100 and I am in the market for something lol.
@@angryrick2330 the biggest benefit is not having to wear a tracker on your head and it isnt affected by light as much as TrackIR. It goes on sale quite often as well.
@@octanejimmy yea that is kinda a big difference. I don’t wanna be forced to wear something to enhance my gaming. Kinda why my vr headset sits idly. Thank you for the response I think tobii is gunna be it.
the only bug I've had and probably due to mal adjustment,is when on a downwind leg and runway on my left I tend to look at the runway for extended periods and this knocks my view off centre. This is easily cured by looking at the centre of the screen and hitting F12................................DOH!!
Interesting that you say to uninstall aTrack IR software. I bought one a while ago but couldn’t get it work the way I wanted. It was very sluggish and the eye tracking drove me crazy. Also it would not stay focused on what I was looking at when I disabled eyetracking, it would center itself. That was a no go for me. I’ll give it another try. Thanks!
I tried the TET5 for about 6 months. Its in a drawer, unused, and I'm back to the hat-switch for looking around. I sit 39 inches from a 48" TV, with Alpha and Bravo peripherals in front of me. The TET5 is unstable, jerky, and very inconsistent. I had none of these issues with TrackIR...but I sold that a couple years ago. I'm hoping a Track-IR 6 is coming soon...
If TET5 could be mounted high on the TV, it might be better product for me...but as it is, it must be mounted on the bottom...and it just doesn't handle larger monitors well...or, I just sit too far way
They have made a new stand so you can place the sensor closer to you
Someones on a hardware roll.
If it makes you feel better... this evening it will be software lol! 😀
Great video. Will this work with a 49 inch curved monitor?
You mean like a G9 ;)
Yeah it worked on mine. But it does not officially support it so keep that in mind
@@OverkillSimulations OK great to know. Thanks for responding
Is the 15% discount still available? The above link takes me to a page showing the full price. Thanks.
So according to Tobi it is optimized for a 27" monitor, so have you given up on your triple monitor setup?
Nope and also tested it successfully on a 49" super ultra wide curved
But couldn't mention that as it's not officially supported
Also if it helps the monitor it's now attached to it's 28 :)
Looks polished! How much does it affect your FPS, CPU and GPU utilization? Does it support X-plane 11 or 12
Thanks for the review
None noticed
Does it support Aerofly FS 4
I am thinking of getting the tobii eye tracker 5 but how will it work with a RTX 3060ti and DDR4 32mb at 36000 ?
The hardware shouldn't matter. It would use CPU over anything else
But... wearing a cap + headset allows the SO to know you are flying instead of doing chores or working. This is stealth.
Ok, I had this for a yr or so but was not able to get this set or working. I have a question for you. Looking at your monitor, your Horizontal axis of your monitor (center going left / right) Is it below your head (eye point) on the screen?
Center point no. The monitor is pretty close to eye level if that's what you're asking. Catch me on Discord and I can try to help you out Amigo
@@OverkillSimulations Then that may be my issue. My monitor sits low on my desk.
@@trancepilot5962 still shouldn't be an issue if the tracker is aimed up at you with line of sight.
Has it ever worked at all
@@OverkillSimulations It did when I first got it, but I had a different setup back then. Smaller monitor which did sit a tad higher I think.
@@trancepilot5962 anticipate a similar problem having just placed my order. The lower part of my monitor is well below my eyeline.
Is it worth $250 if you have a trackIR?
I love it for MSFS (and Star Citizen) but for DCS sadly i find it far too slow to track, especially when looking behind. So much so that I bought trackir solely for DCS. This was about a year and a half ago so maybe it's improved now but back then it was a deal breaker for me.
I want to get into IL2 & DCS, this is a great comment, thanks.
@@MarKDoesKeto Yeah it could always be something in the setup or adjustments I was missing, but at the time it was a pretty common complaint from more combat sim centred reviews on youtube. Still, I have no complaints using it with MSFS.
I know @OverkillSimulations does play DCS so it may well be something that is better or worse with different setups. Just something to bear in mind.
@@tekaid23 Yes Overkill please mention performance in DCS - since you have both products. On I'm the fence of buying one or the other.
I replied to another dcs comment above, but to reiterate, trackir5 paired with an aftermarket head unit has better accuracy, precision and responsivness than tobii. For the price difference tobii probably isn't the best option for dcs as you lose performance but spend more money. If you fly msfs exclusively where the added precision isn't as vital and really don't like wearing headphones, tobii is probably the option for you.
@@MarKDoesKeto See my comment above.
I would prefer using the game hub for MSFS. The MSFS build-in for Tobi is very limited. For example you can’t separate X Y axis settings. The game hub has way more ability to dial it in.
You missed the big negative that it’s 100 dollars more then the TrackIR.
