Forgotten Beasts being the forgotten castoffs and scraps the gods accidentally left under the surface of the world when they were done making it and embued the world with life is such an interesting idea.

@@kruggsmashWhen I do breeding projects, I like to separate mothers out in separate rooms and/or chained up (if non grazer) since child animals like to stay around them. Makes it easier to keep track of them.
On a more gnarly side, I have long been mulling over creating a automated meat industry by chaining up mothers and then have running water push any children born over a ledge into a drop that will kill them. Never gotten around to it since the benefits are only minor, I just like trying to come up with ways to automate things, but it might be marginaly usefull for creating a meat industry with wild animals.
If you create a soft landing with featherwood floors you could possible use it as a way to automatically separate child from mothers and deposit them in whatever holding pen or grazing area you want.

Hearing Krugg strategize about all the forgotten beasts' unique traits makes me think about where the dwarves learned of all that stuff. I wonder if they have like, a monster compendium, and if they do if anyone in the fortress is working on adding to it based on the beasts they fight. Since this is a monster-hunting fortress it would be such a cool thing to pass down through generations far into the future.

I've found that having an individual temple dedicated to each of the dwarven gods - containing very high quality furniture + high quality door + expert engraving - gives the dorks a lot of happy thoughts at a relatively low cost.
Building guild halls with high quality fixtures and engravings, also helps the mood a lot.
Raiding 'dead' areas for treasure ( most likely books ) can yield good results without too much external threat - except for the BS 'total value' metric which determines enemy raids.

I would love to see your take on a narrative about a RimWorld colony. RimWorld isn't as deep as DF in some ways but it is a much better player experience and the storytelling that comes from its random events is always surprising and dramatic. Hope you give it a shot after the Spearcavern story comes to an end.

I had a neat discovery in my current fort with Draltha. I captured a bunch with my cage traps around my first cavern layer entrance, and my dorfs naturally took them up in the animal storage area. Eventually, a few of them had children. So, I decided to see about training them. The adults took to the training a little (eventually getting better trained), but I somehow managed to immediately tame the children and they are fully domesticated. After a few generations, I've got herds of fully tame Draltha in my fungal fields. My civilization has learned a lot about Draltha taming from my fort's efforts. Worth giving them a shot in the future.

What I found helps your dwarves deal with web-slinging FBs is a "quarantine chamber", where a hatch leads to a 5x5 barracks. Another hatch in the center of the room leads down to a narrow hall connected to the cavern. When the beast spawns in the cavern, the hatch can be unlocked, and when the beast climbs up the stairs it comes face to face with your training dwarves. Since the dwarves are surrounding the hatch, they won't all be webbed and can hack at it freely.

As a general PSA, I stumbled on a reliable way of fighting webbing creatures with minimal casualties. What you want is a long, vertical stairwell. Mine was 3x3 and stretched from fort to caverns. Engage the webbers while they're still climbing the stairs, as it seems they're not able to spray webs up or down, only horizontally. While your soldiers can stab at it from above and below.

My method for webbed beasts is large numbers and big open rooms. Specifically if you make a staircase that goes up into the center of a big room filled with dwarves and war dogs and put a hatch so they dont run down the stairs, the beast is only able to shoot in one direction at a time so some of the dwarves should be able to stun lock it before it can web them all.

You could automate the forgotten beast trap with raising bridges and pressure plates. And maybe a bridge/door to block access whenever you aren't using it to trap beasts so its a not a free way into the fortress. Then you can trap all the big beasties you want to throw in an arena or something. Or set up for silk farming or fire throwing defense. Lots of fun possibilities.

Breeding specific animals is a hella pain, not just the gelder/butcher/renaming thing but also the general issue of sexuality of an animal
Reason why Skydog also never had pups, tho i had hoped we would've gotten another like her from the parents and keep it going with that

I had the barracks problem too, ended up solving it by assigning each weapon and armor piece individually. It was a pain to do for 4 squads, because in the menu you can't easily tell which ones were assigned already, but for seven dwarves this should not be a big issue. This is a pretty brute force solution tho so hope you can find a better one.

Yeah, when you study how the combat works (usually via manual targeting stuff in adventure mode) is you can see the chance to hit and the "solidness" of the hit. The automatic choices go for prioritizing hit chance which is often why a fight between fresh opponents starts off with a lot of misses or hits that graze. Now if you target someone sleeping, unconscious, or webbed the hit chance on any part is going to be 100% so the choice there is to go for the most lethal option.

A mocking bird forgotten beast! One would have to wonder what strange noises it have picked up and is copying since time immemorial, maybe it whispers the forgotten words of the gods at the time of creation?
