    Unbelievable that a professional like this doesn’t have thousands more views. I guess everyone else is looking for cheap and easy, not professional quality craftsmanship. Sad really.

    Thank you! This was very helpful! We just bought an unfinished front door, and I've had a heck of a time looking for best products and how to get started. I've never stained a really nice exterior piece like this , always interior, or like a fence and I'm very hesitant to just start slapping any old stain on something so expensive. Normally I would use pre-stain to prep the wood for anything I'm building. Do you ever use that or do you find it's unnecessary or even bad to use for front doors?

    Thanks Louis!
    Did you have to mist coat the door with water to raise the grain?

    Thank you for the tips. I thought it would be a good idea to include that all stain rags and paper towels should be soaked in water. I threw my rag away in a garbage bag many years ago and it self ignited. Lucky I was home still and there was no damage to house really. But could have been bad. Anyway thank you

    Awesome stuff. Do you teach any classes in the Houston area?

    If starting from raw White Oak or African Mahogany, would you bother with an oil-based wood grain filler mixed in if you were using an oil-based wiping stain, finished with a Spar Varnish? Would you ever consider using a wood filler for hairline cracks where the sun has weathered it pretty bad?

    • @finefinishsupply
      @finefinishsupply  Před 3 lety

      In my experience, wood fillers never hold up well when exposed to the elements. If the job is for a customer I would avoid it just incase it does fail and the customer expects you to fix it...

    What’s the alternative to spraying clear if I don’t have a spray gun? Also, what’s the reason for sanding after the clear?

    • @finefinishsupply
      @finefinishsupply  Před 3 lety +2

      This product can also be brushed if reduced Slightly. Sanding between clear coats with give a much nicer end result

      It will smooth out the finish by removing dust nubs & give a more professional appearance. Brush on urethane is an option, but doesn't lay out like a sprayed product.

      Thanks for the tip bro, it makes sense heat gun and non -solvent paint sounds very reasonable, cool!
