Top 10 Acting Performances of All Time

- The acting performances on this list are ranked according to their commercial success (awards), along with the level of skill, versatility and role transformation each actor displayed. To me, accuracy when making a Top 10/Top 100 all time list is extremely important. My lists are not based on my own personal favorites; they are based on the true greatness and/or success of the person, place or thing being ranked. In other words, an actor's commercial success (Oscars & BAFTA Awards), and influential greatness through their acting skill and role transformation, is how I ranked the performances on this list. If you guys would like to view my other Top 10/Top 100 lists, feel free to check out my CZcams page and/or my IMDb page at *ChrisWalczyk55*.

Ledger’s performance changed they way I watch movies. So genius it’s terrifying. Watch the scene when he has broken out of jail and is in the cop car, perfect.
i completely agree with you,
I never think about it before but now I've realised it..
Agreed.
That scene was the best movie scene of all time (for me)

Johnny O'Graddy hey what does that scene means ? Please tell me
R.I.P Heath Ledger, amazing actor!

The sounds he makes with his mouth during that scene.. just makes the whole scene better

One of my favorite scenes of all time is the opening scene in inglorious bastards with Christoph waltz in the milk farm
lvitela24 I’m so glad I saw your comment, that scene is so underrated in my opinion
U r good damn right
OMG yes!! Colonnel Hans Landa was terrifyingly charming while speaking to the farmer. Even if he was speaking in a aapparently light tone you can feel the very dangerous man he is! Genius

Without Marlon Brando , this list is incomplete
His horror speech in Apocalypse Now is still the benchmark
Hell yeah.
So so so true.
Fuck him. Acting has evolved way beyond that level now.
@@Gasta1983 you dumb?
If heath ledger was still alive he probably would’ve been one of the best actors of all time
Brando still would be number 1
You bet
He is even when he’s dead
@@_talon he’s literally my favorite actor now, dude is outstanding and it sucks that we couldn’t see what else he had under his sleeves
@@Stormertheboy modern people don't know about Brando. They just want superhero movie shit and they call these so called superheroes best actors. Off course Heath Ledger is an exception. But people really don't know about real acting.
I loved the fact that Daniel Day Lewis was in here for "There Will Be Blood". A very underrated movie and an outstanding performance. There is NO dialogue for the first 23 minutes of the movie and yet it communicates so much about the character that Lewis portrays (Daniel Plainview). A brilliant movie. And I quote: "I drink your milkshake!!!" Now you gotta go watch the movie in order to understand the quote.
Underrated? Wtf, it’s one of the most praised performances of all time
@@Johnnysmithy24 I said "underrated movie and an outstanding performance". Not the same thing. Outside of people in the movie industry, go ask 20 people if they've seen "There will be Blood" and 19 will say they've never seen it, most will say they've never heard of it. Nevertheless, it's lack of renown does not mean it is less quality...as a movie and as an individual performance.
@@blairminyard2666 Dude it’s not underrated by any means. Why would regular people who don’t know cinema know it?? You’re acting like it’s some arthouse indie movie that no one saw. It’s commonly agreed to be the best movie of the 21st century by most people in the film crowd, and I’m not even talking just experts here. It always has amazing rankings
So what if the average person on the street doesn’t know it? Why would they need to? The average person has very little knowledge of anything in general to have a saying on rating films. That’s not being underrated when everyone who knows anything about movies praises it. A MUCH more underrated movie came out in that same year and was completely overshadowed because of the big releases by big directors such as this one.
“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” is the name, arguably just as good as this one, and much more deserving of the Oscar for cinematography. No one talks about it, everyone talks about There Will Be Blood so no It’s not underrated
@@Johnnysmithy24 My friend...#1, we agree that it was a terrific movie. #2, we agree that it was a phenomenal performance. #3, we agree that most people who saw the movie and the performance would say it was excellent. #4, we agree that most people have not seen it. What you fail to understand is that "underrated" doesn't mean that people (including myself) are saying it's bad. It means that the movie has NOT BEEN RATED BY MANY PEOPLE because not many people have seen it. Hence, UNDERrated. And for you to dismiss the voice and opinion of the common movie goer is ignorant and elitist on your part. Believe it or not, the masses do matter. And if an outstanding acting performance does not reach the masses, guess what, that makes it "UNDERRATED" because they have not seen it. Heck, the word itself is it's definition. "Underrated" means that it has been rated by less than (fewer, or under) what would be considered a normal number of people to judge something.
Why is Heath Ledger's performance not considered "underrated"? Well, because everyone and their mother has seen it. And among the common movie patron as well as cinema cognoscenti, most everyone consider it an outstanding performance. Me, I'd consider it overrated because SO MANY people talk about how great it was and I personally felt it was "meh". But regardless of how myself or others judge it, it would never be considered "underrated" simply because of how many people saw it.
@@blairminyard2666 Heath’s performance is not considered underrated because everyone praises it, everyone. And why is it more known? It’s simple, because the masses are more interested in watching superhero movies than a film about oil in the early 20th century.

Silence of the lambs*
Wow...John Hurt in The Elephant Man! First movie to make me cry!
It's hard to compare any of these roles. I love Heath Ledgers performance as the Joker but i gotta say that Daniel Day Lewis' performance in There Will Be Blood blew my mind. I've never seen a person blend so well into a character like I did with him. I didn't even know he had an accent in real life until I seen him accept the oscar for best actor...He nailed that role so beautifully. That performance has stuck with me more than any other.
"I didn't even know he had an accent in real life"
wow, that has to be the most american phrase I've ever read... you know everyone has an accent... right?
@@TheButterMinecart1 I think everybody that isn't you knows what I meant by saying he had an accent. Sorry I didn't elaborate for you, specifically. But go ahead and try to start something, for no reason, on an irrelevant year old comment. Well done. Also, I'm Canadian.

Another appropriate title for this video: "Top 10 performances in the very few movies I've watched."
Amen
Were you expecting him to have watched every movie in cinematic history prior to making this list?
yes
yes, it's very limited to some 2 or 3 decades of cinema only
like what you would add??it is not perfect but it isn't bad at all.And those performances became typical and cliche because they are very very great and everyone knows them. But you are very edgy and you think that no one will recognise the other hidden from our world talents...
Where is vito corleone marlon Brando ???????????
He’s never seen The Godfather and probably doesn’t know who Brando is.
I honestly think that performance is overrated. The Godfather is a great film but Vito Corleone is only in half the movie. Michael's evolution into the new godfather was a better performance.
Brando in a street car named desire.
Jessee Padilla yes i agree with you about evolution of Michael Corleone its amazing, awesome , but vito its perfect like godfather, when he speak the world stop listen, every details are perfect and for me one of the performance of all time
Brando did have an extremely commanding presence and voice, I agree.

Marlon Brando (Godfather) and Al Pacino (Scarface) surely deserves a place in top 10.
Shiva Shankar Al Pacino in The Godfather too
Negative. You people know the same 4-5 movies that are super overrated. But even if you like the movie a lot, you should be able to look at an individuals performance and say, "well that kinda sucks". Acting has come a long way since those movies have come out.

When I was a kid watching Joker dealing with Batman, I always thought that he is just this bad clown who keeps on smiling and doing bad things. That changed forever and for the first time I really understood the inner dark side of The Joker after I've seen Heath Ledger's highest performance of "The Joker". Since then I respected "The Joker" identity as a very dark villain and not only as a bad clown. He performed it so well that when I was watching him as The Joker, I was so damn quiet and felt his performance not as an actor but the real Joker and his inner dark side. His performance was so high that it gave other actors to climb so hard to reach that level in portraying what I call the real Joker persona. Too sad, Heath could have done a lot of historical performances. Gone too soon - RIP. Back to the present, Joaquin Phoenix performance was amazing as well.
A few favorites of mine not on the list: Charlize Theron, Monster. Marlon Brando Vito Corleone, Ellen Burstyn, Requiem for a Dream. Kirsten Dunst, Melancholia. Javier Bardem, Anton Chigurgh
Anton is always top 5 no matter what list it is haha
Top Three: 1. Dan. Day Lewis-There Will Be Blood. 2. Peter O' Toole-Lawerance of Arabia 3. Tom Hulce/F. Murrey Abraham-Amedeus... Unusual mentions; Benecio Del Torro, Fenster-Usual Suspects. Christopher Walken, Don ?-True Romance along with Gary Oldman, Drexel. Charlie Sheen, William Defoe, and Tom Berenger in Platoon; Incredible. Kevin Costner, Dances With Wolves. Judy Garland, Wizard of Oz.
Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood will forever be my favorite acting performance of all time, he literally is a different person in that movie, down to the smallest mannerisms and even his way of speaking
I agree with you!

7. Ed Norton- American History X

Not a definitive list, just my opinion, with honorable mentions to Javier Bardem, No Country For Old Men, Marlon Brando, The Godfather, Jack Nicholson, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Faye Dunaway, Chinatown, Robert De Niro, Taxi Driver, Jack Lemmon, Some Like It Hot, Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs, Max Schreck, Nosferatu, Chaplin, The Kid, Daniel Day Lewis, Gangs of New York/Lincoln. No no no ......Daniel day lewis the crucible. Gives me chills.i may even dare to say greatest performance on film ever.
You could just skip the second Nickolson. So many others to choose. Brando in Godfather, Di Caprio in Wolf, Welles in Cain, McQuinn in Papillon, Gibson in Braveheart, Perkins in Psycho, Williams in Poets, Sheen in Apocalypse, Spacey in Suspects, Pitt in Seven, Bardem in Sea, Chaplin in Dictator, Penn in River, McGregor in Trainspotting, Robbins in Shawshank and so on.
***** I'd prefer apart from critisizing, you gave me your choices too. I think all my choices are excelent performances in very powerful films. Pitt's role is way more demanding than Freeman's.
It's true that i haven't seen many Gibson films...like Gallipoli you mentioned.
rasta man u r absolutely right bro
Also Christolph Waltz as Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds
You can skip The Shining but you can't skip One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. That performance is one of the greatest ever.
FUCK, Al Pacino is fucking masterclass, he practically ruled 70s, 80s and some movies even in 90s, amazing actor....
Meh, he didn't do much in the 80's. He did more in the 90's than the 80's. But man! He kind of ruled the 70's with De Niro. But De Niro even had phenomenal films and performances in the 80's. But now these two have gone downhill, somehow...
+Eric Cartman well, Rob De Niro had maybe a few more good movies than Pacino, but from the acting point of view, Al Pacino is surely better actor, cause De Niro never put up such performances as Pacino did in such masterpieces like "Scarface", "Scent of a Woman", "The Godfather Part II", but I still love De Niro, also very amazing actor...
itkojecockot In my honest opinion, I think De Niro is a superior actor. But these two are great actors, whatsoever.
In my opinion, the 3 best actors of all time are:
1. Robert De Niro
2. Daniel Day Lewis
3. Marlon Brando
+Eric Cartman the only movie where De Niro equaled Al Pacino was in "Taxi Driver", you probably cannot recognize acting from having a good movie, because like I said, De Niro was in more good movies than Pacino, but from the acting point of view, Pacino is certainly more talented artist....
itkojecockot Ever watched Raging Bull. You probably just forgot that Robert De Niro was in it :P
Nah, but he disappeared into that character of Jake La Motta. That's one of the best acting performances ever (in my opinion). I'll tell you, you're definitely not gonna change my opinion. But can we at least agree that they are both fucking fantastic actors?
Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview.
Literally nothing can beat that.
MAYBE Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz, but no.
Mickey Rourke in the wrestler deserves to be mentioned here.
Sam L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction

He had al’s performance in scent of a woman over the godfather is crazy, maybe watch more films before compiling this list
Michael clark duncan as john coffey in the green mile
Sam Rockwell as the wild bill in the green mile
2 greatest cinematic performances ever💯💯
Training day.. Denzel always lights up every scene he's in
why was "The Godfather" on the thumbnail when it wasn't even in the list?
The single best performance ever was Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot. A master class of Method Acting
#1 should always be heath ledger.
His greatest moments in that movie were unscripted. An hour pacing back and forth in the hospital scene with Harvey. The slow clap when he’s locked up.
His melodic laugh as he walks into the meeting with the mob bosses.
The scene he first meets Rachel. (She was so scared she couldn’t keep eye contact.
The hospital explosion scene...
By far the best performance EVER.
The fact that you're so confident means you clearly haven't seen raging bull. The scene this guy is showing is by far not the best scene. Many scenes were improvised and De Niro even put on like 80 pounds for the role later on in the film. I would say it's very close.
LJMownage I have seen raging bull. Don’t ASSume.
“I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices - it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh. I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath - someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts.” - Heath Ledger
He also did his own makeup every single day, designed the look for that particular joker down to the fabric and colors.
He eventually couldn’t go more than 2 hours of sleep a day eventually cause he was so caught up in his method acting.
Not even close.
li d li d great question or idea... but Christopher Nolan doesn’t just replicate characters... he makes his own. He adds his own twist. And he personally wanted Heath to be Joker since the beginning.
And most of the time, I’d the director didn’t like it, it just won’t make the final cut.
To show you the brilliance of improvised... the hospital scene where the joker blows up the entire building... it doesn’t work at first. It doesn’t blow up. Heath (the joker) stays in his character and improvises on that scene.. it was perfect. You can improvise a scene and still be in character.
LJMownage I’m not doubting you but, let me have you know that Heath Ledger did DIE playing his character. The insomnia didnt just, happen.
li d basically..
Like Spider-Man. People would say the new one is better ( the teenager) some like the original one with Mcgruire..
But all in all, Heath has one of the best performances ever. The only reason why some people can’t watch it is because of the entire movie itself.
It’s not like the new “joker” coming out which is just about him. Which I HIGHLY recommend going to see. It might top Heath’s performance but that’s a high bar to pass

How about Leonardo DiCaprio in Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Diaries? To me they were DiCaprio's best and some of the best acting I've ever seen. Also, I think Heath Ledger as The Joker and Jack Nicholson in The Shining should've been higher in the list.

I can go on and on...
Of ALL the spectacular Pacino performances, you choose the "sorry we snubbed you for 20 years, here's your compensatory oscar" performance?
Don't know why I bother.
pup lover I have just one thing to say about his performance: He portrayed a blind man PERFECTLY. My mother is a nurse, works at an opticians practice, and she knows very well what a blind person looks like and how he or she acts. Pacino never looked directly at something, and he didn't overdo it. The film is a bit cheesy, but he portrayed his character as best as he could, and he did a bloody good job.
marija popovic I agree w/ everything you say. But, compared to his other NON oscar bait performances, Scent isn't even in the running. Dog Day Afternoon, Godfather, Serpico, come on!
pup lover Yes, you got that right
+pup lover well, Al Pacino is probably the only actor who's MOST movies should've gotten an oscar, but they couldn't give him like 20 oscars offcourse, I don't know what are you talking about, cause "Scent of a Woman" was brilliant movie and Al nailed it....
+pup lover right! hell, i thought he was even better in Any Given Sunday than Scent of a Woman...his line in Heat shoulda won a oscar itself: "SHES GOT A GREAT ASSSSSSS!"
These are so good I teared up a little bit...
Adrien brody-The Pianist

Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot is one of the greatest of all time.
the dark knight is one of my favourite movies ever. i love the joker he’s definitely my favourite
Tbh I think Heath ledgers joker is the greatest cinematic performance of all time. I can't think of anything better.
I Agree 100% it's the most intense performance in history of cinema !
I m happy that someone appreciates Jack Nicholsons performance in this quite unknown drama and certainly in The Shining which is famous.
Really one of my alltime favourite and the greatest actor. Heath Ledger (REST IN PEACE)
Nice list, definitely agree with #1
