Sonny Liston:
A man who grew up as an illegally kept slave on a plantation, A man who was a homeless child who went onto become a juvenile felon just to survive while sleeping on park benches, A man who had no formal education, A man who had to fight and claw his way through over 5,000 men boxing to the death as a teenager just to have a chance to have a second chance at life, A man went through life with devote faith inside of the Catholic religion, A man who dedicated his remaining portion of his life to make a positive example for troubled youths through philanthropy, A man who was employed by the mob as a legbreaker, A man who was once thought of invincible, A man who's life cam crashing down with realization of defeat, A man who turned back to crime with it being his own undoing, A man who was in the end left broken and alone, A man who's life and legacy is largely unknown and forgotten,
Sonny Liston,
"A man"
Today, he’s looked at as one of the greats
Where did u get it from that he worked as an illegally kept slave? I cant seem to find anything on that bit
@@jamal22958he was never a slave.
I'm a huge fan of Liston it's a shame Ali had to eclipse him
So true America not as free as they claim

They called him a bully. No one was bullied more than him
He had a sad life
@@reginaldroundtree1325well it sucked the beggining but he had his moments he wouldnt be the best boxer if he was raised in confort
@flowrepins6663 had his moments? The dude spent 2-3 years calling out Floyd Patterson after steamrolling literally everyone in the heavyweight division so that no one could debate whether or not he really deserved a title shot, just to get booed everytime the fight announcer said his name to spectators. He didn't know how to read so he memorized a speech he had planned on giving to the people of his hometown when he got home after finally beating Patterson for the heavyweight title, just to exit his plane to 0 people welcoming him home. He had a hard life from beginning to end. He tried to be a good person, but when people ignored that and called him a monster, he finally decided to give them what they wanted.
@@kylelavine1461His beginning in life was so bad, his biographer stated “I think he (Sonny Liston) died the day he was born.”
I think Sonny Liston life story would make an incredible movie

I have a feeling it’s coming.
It’s movies out about Sonny already

He was hated because no one knew him. He loved children and helped orphans. He was not perfect but like most people he had some bad points and some really good points. It broke his heart when he was deplaning and no one was there to greet him.
I believe this man was massively misunderstood and born too early. He had a good heart but was born in a hellish world which didn't like him, all he wanted was the public support. Later generations would've loved him dearly
@@amartya9034 He was born to a hellish family and had to fend for himself from a young age. He was in a life of crime since he was a boy and worked for the mafia collecting money.
He had no choice it was a matter of survival.
Regurgitating comments from other Sonny vids.
@Bill Williams Nope, Unfortunately I'm old and knew his story.
My memory is not good as it once was but I've watched every old fight I could going as far back as I could.
Also read as far back as Paddy Ryan.
At one time I could have told you every HW champion in order.
I was thinking he looks like a super nice guy
Rip Sonny Liston🙏🏽. The most misunderstood fighter!
may be because of his criminal history and personality being less welcoming
@@kunalgoswami1243he was the greatest intimidator until ali beat him then everything came crashing down
And also what you said too, he was really a misunderstood boxer
@@kunalgoswami1243I mean, the man did have to escape his family's plantation as a teen so a life of crime for a young black man back then made sense.. He also had a right to hate the media seeing they constantly shitted on him and made him take a route similar to Joe Louis where he got his title fight way later than he should.. Not saying he's a victim, but it's easy for me to see why he was the way he was
Omg shut tf up bro. He was still human. @@kunalgoswami1243

Watch him around kids. Heart melting.

There should be a movie about Sonny Liston
Watch Phantom Punch, it’s low budget but still a good movie.
A lot of money would have to be found to pay for production costs, doesn't grow on trees. And then beyond a few snow flake boxing fans who think he was some sort of 'Saint Veronica' type character, who would watch it?
People don't know it but he was actually a good man.
He was, he was really good in the armed robberies he committed.
This guy was a real star in his prime. He was so famous. Somehow that got lost to history
That's because he wasn't famous. He was infamous.
That's an understatement, Liston was supposed to go on a tour of Africa in 1963, making him the first Black professional boxer to tour Africa.
He actually gave Ali the idea to tour in Africa.
Liston was a star because most people thought before Ali, that he was exalted to eventually become the Greatest Heavyweight Champion of All Time. He was feared due to his punching power, and with Sonny's mob ties and naturally intimidating appearance, ordinary people and fighters a like cried in their dressing rooms after meeting Liston because they where that afraid of his strength. But Liston's image in the public was often one of a duel nature, Liston was also known worldwide for his philanthropy. He worked by day as a philanthropist who was a troubled youth mentor who funded children's hospitals and orphanages and the next minute he was running with the mob. It was almost unparalleled the level of fear he instilled in his opponents without even saying a word to them, yet he strangely could diffuse the fear he instilled by just his smile alone.
sonny liston was very nice boxer and no attitude at all miss you legend
You can't be serious??? Lol
Haha guys back then were all sacred to even look to sonny Liston.
He’s the best heavyweight not fucking Tyson fury
Don't forget him. He was created. He was a good person. Its only circumstances that led towards everything else.
Sonny Liston. The most underrated man in boxing history, this man was truly great just like Muhammad Ali. No one understood Sonny for he was not as appreciated as other boxers were. He worked so hard to get to where he reached and never gave up until he died. This man's legacy, and greatness will forever remain in my heart.
Rest was a big part of his training day, man’s lethal,
Sonny Liston had farm strength.
So true he was even a plow horse at times.

Not a man to be messed with.

This proofs that you just have to stick to the basics: full comittment, hard work and good sleep... nowadays were just blended with all the extra stuff and spend to much time on social media....
One of my favourite fighters ever Charles Sonny Liston
I wish he had a better life. 😢 He seemed like he wud have definitely turned over a new leaf if given the chance. The world was too cruel when he came about. I hope he gets to be reborn and celebrated like he deseves or just have a gentler happier life.
The most under appreciated heavyweight champion in boxing history rip Sonny “Night Train” Liston 💪🏽💪🏽🙏🏽.
"Big Bear finally getting his flowers".
One of the all time greats, Sonny Liston.
Respect Sonny Liston great Man
I got to say, for as intense his staredowns could be I could never see a stone cold killer in those eyes of his. Eyes never lie, he was a very kind a very soft spoken man forced to be a monster.
One of the highest ape-indices ever measured, to have an 84" reach at his height is just insane. Man had holiday hams for hands and was just a pure mutant.
That guy is right up there next to God
I'm getting that feeling as well reading all the drivel.
This man was a killing machine.
He lived thru the brutality of his fists and the regimented discipline he accustomed himself to.
That is a dangerous man. He is like a tiger. That man will break you.
Mike Tyson referenced Liston and Jack Dempsey as the fighters he represents.
Cold merciless killers with their hands.
Ray Arcel said :When Jack Dempsey approached the ring it was the sense that a tiger had been released.
Hungry men with no chance in life but what they could do with their fists.
Savages in a time of ruthlessness far below today's safety standards, where fighters still die annually.
Truly one of the oddest training regimen of all time
That is a solid ass training regimen
sonny look like a nice guy..- good man
I've read in numerous boxing biographies that fighters such as George Foreman, Cleveland Williams, Sonny Liston, Joe Louis, Earnie Shavers,Jersey Joe Walcott, Ken Norton and Joe Frazier would seclude themselves on remote farms preferably near a lake where they would run the trails in the morning in heavy boots, chop wood, throw bales of hay and row around a lake to supplement their training which was very simplistic but taken to the absolute limit of rope skipping, heavy bag, speed bag, sparring and calisthenics and yet they all had some of the best speed, punching power, stamina and physiques the heavyweight division has ever seen.
You were and you are always my idol...respect you sonny THE GOAT IN THE BOXING WORLD
I can see how Mike took inspiration from this legend!
What a human specimen was the great Sonny Liston. Of the the best ever and what a story! RIP Champ.
Dude knocked out guys with jabs!!
Monster genetics.
A very misunderstood man, and all round quite a sad life he had from start to finish..
How so?
@@alexwatson5792He was a kind, gentle man despite his size and profession, but spend large parts of his life surrounded by criminals who exploited him by using him as an enforcer (mafia) and later his money.
He died very young of a 'heroin overdose', but in reality it was more than likely staged by the mafia as he had an alleged gambling issue.
It's great to see snippets of info on past greats. We need to see and learn more about Sonny Liston from the man himself, the softer warmer side of his nature because it clearly shows from these rare interviews that he had one.
I recently went back to school in hopes to being a chemical dependency counselor, and for my public speaking class I'm doing a short speech on Sonny Liston. I'm nervous as hell in large part because I've got less than six minutes to cover his childhood, criminal career and prison, discovering boxing and his career, Ali fights and mysterious death. Tough task, I just want him to be remembered and for people to understand he was a victim of circumstances. Part of the reason for his dislike of the media was the fact that he was made to look mean and dumb. Being someone of average intelligence like I believe he was, his lack of education made it to where he wasn't able to defend himself verbally as well as he'd have liked
My favorite fighter of all time.
😢 sonny Liston R.I.P💔
that man was the beast of all beast
Rip. Champ
I’ve got the sleep and cup of tea bit down! 👍
Sonny wasn’t known for being a Spartan in the training department.
He's the most underrated appreciated person in the history of sports and maybe the world he was such a great man who really wanted to help the world and we as a society turned our back on him one of the most messed up things ever I wish I could go back in time to let him know that he how great he really was so sad what happened to him rest in paradise Sonny
He would have just laughed at all that I'd say, or alternatively put his fingers down his throat.
This man needs a whole ass movie
Watch Phantom Punch, it’s low budget but still a good movie.
Powerful and intimidating
Sonny Liston in this day and age in 2023 would be a damn God. He would be revered all over the world no matter what has passed. Was. Look into the good deeds that he did and you might change your mind about what a bad guy he was. Circumstances, they could put anybody in a bad way.
Then you think maybe he would create a new Heaven and new earth ?

Love Sonny. ❤️
The highlight of his training, GOING TO BED AND HAVING A CUP OF TEA. IF WE CAN MANAGE TO DO THAT WE ALL CAN BE LIKE SONNY 🤣🤣
😂😂😂 You are very funny fella
His story breaks my heart. No one deserves his life. Only sadder ending imo was Tommy Morrison but he could have lived a different life. Sunny was treated like a slave by his own Dad and mob life was his out and then he gets to be champ only not to have fans. Even when he was winning he was losing, sucks
I’m going to do this same routine. The cup of tea and everything.

Think if he had a cus with that style he may have been Tyson before Tyson because Sonny like Tyson could hit with both hands , i wouldve loved to see a prime Sonny VS BIG George Foreman
Cus D'amato was a Bum as a Trainer. He couldn't train a Chicken to lay an egg. He was a Matchmaker. That was his forte.

Sonny was a physical specimen. He was listed at 6'1" about 215lbs but looked 230lbs with a 84 inch wing span and 15 inch fist. Most guys his size have a wing span of about 76 inches and maybe a 12 inch fist. Dude was a beast although he would be considered a small heavyweight today.
