  • Two cricket journalists stumble upon one of the biggest sporting scandals ever. Test cricket is the purest form of the second most popular sport on Earth. It is steeped in tradition, history, heroes and legend. But challenged by its shorter, sexier and more commercial cousin, Twenty 20, it risks falling into obscurity.

As a new fan of the traditional game from the States, I can't help but notice some similarities between how greed massacred cricket, and how greed whores up baseball, American football, and basketball. This wonderful documentary is further proof that corporate nonsense continues to ruin the remaining pieces of civilization.

At this point they are saying ODI cricket will die and T20 and Test is the only 2 formats. Which also sucks because ODI is a great format. T20 isn't real cricket, it shouldn't be played international level.

test cricket will live as long as india puts out a good team. I strongly suspect that if their fortunes decline in test cricket, that will spell the end of the format, with the aussies playing the english every year in the ashes, a series that has more to do with nationalist egos than actual quality on the pitch. That being said, the IPL allows players to earn the sort of money that their skills demands. That above all else is the purpose of professional sports

These documentaries about Indian cricket were not able to capture the answer of the main question. The question is why Indian public and their government is so concern or mad about cricket?
It is a common mistake to think that Indians have passion for Cricket. It is not the passion of Cricket. If they have passion of cricket then they will not do things to cricket that they are doing.
It is about Indians insecurity and inferiority complex and their hatred towards their own selves and other nations. You need to go way back in Indian history to understand this point. This is revenge against people who Indians think have done wrong to them in the past. Why do you think the Indian crowd go silent every time when the other team is winning?. Because the Indians are not playing Cricket . They are trying to take the revenge . This nation is burning from inside. They are willing to use any tactic ( good or bad) to win. They even copy Hollywood movies to show that they can make good movies.
You see India have been ruled and conquered by different nations for many centuries again and again for example by Greeks( Alexander the Great) , Muslims and then British. The Indians always see themselves as an ancient civilization who were never respected and loved the way they think they should have by other nations. They think the invaders did wrong to them. I think this is understandable.
Indians also feel guilty that they were never strong enough or brave enough to stop these foreign invaders from making them their slaves and taking over their motherland. These foreign powers especially the British also took their wealth away and ruled them by telling them that they are not strong or good enough. So, Indians think that if they are conquered, they would have been the greatest nation on the earth.
In the present day with all the nuclear power and military might, Indians still can not conquer other countries. Indian does not want to jeopardize their economic growth by going into War with another country. It needs other countries to grow and eliminate poverty.
Thus, they try to show their power by other means. For example, Cricket. They are constantly trying to show that they are better than everybody else. They do not care if they ruin beautiful sports like Cricket in this process in the fire of their blind revenge.
India needs to forgive and move on and play cricket as a sport.

Re-Watching this on the day of Warner's retirement and Post-Sandpaper game is a poignant experience.
Windies being forced to bring 7 debutants for a 2 test match series... Khawaja basically admitting test cricket is on it's deathbed. Countless articles and discussion about the poor crowds and poor interest this summer as the Pakistan Cricket team gets rolled by Australia as if they were just a shield team... The discussion was put on hold to celebrate Warner who has supposedly instigated or played a big part of sandpapergate. Wonder how the cricket Gods are sleeping tonight...

I wanted to watch this for a quite a long time but am quite disappointed as it is quite one sided and really cheesey. It may have well as been subtitled "India is ruining cricket". I am surprised they didnt blame Cowans demise on the BCCI as well.
All of this ICC/BCCI dodginess has not the demise of test cricket, it is a repercussion. Test cricket started to die in the 90s/2000s under the Aus/Eng leadership. India didnt tour Australia for 10 years! Eng/Aus barely invited SL for test tours. Having 2 countries who HAD to block out 3 months of the calendar every 2 years to play the Ashes, which was held up as the pinnacle of the sport at the expense of the other 5 or 6 nation's is what stunted test crickets growth. On top of all that, from the 80s until 2000s, the Ashes were the biggest bore. I only remember one exciting series, in 2005. Everything was one sided. And you only enjoyed it if you were a brainwashed Australian/Englishman who still maintained it was the ultimate. And I say this as an Aussie.

    • @anweshchatterjee7595
      @anweshchatterjee7595 Před rokem +2

Disagree. How can the biggest test series be bad for test cricket? The 2 countries are free to make it the biggest series they play, that's not harming the other 10 teams. Just like how the IPL can't possibly be bad for cricket when it's actually growing the game, not just here in India but worldwide. The problem is how the powerful governing bodies work with these tournaments to benefit all cricket playing countries and grow it further. That's where it's been going wrong for ages. And the BCCI is the major culprit whether you like it or not. The film did it's best to cover this.

Obviously, people love this game. I am from Croatia and i just don't get it, nobody cares about it here. The same with baseball (we have some "league" with neighboor countries), i'm bored after 10 minutes, and they play very long matches. Rugby is a bit more attractive, but also pretty unknown in Croatia. We care only about football (soccer), handball, waterpolo and boxing. Well, we are a small nation, UK has more cricket players then Croatias population is. But we have one or two teams that play Australian football, that's odd...

Just saw the first half of it.
Deeply flawed documentary. I mean pitting Ed Cowan against David Warner as a battle of tradition vs modernity or Test vs T20 spirit is not going to fly!
Test cricket cannot market itself as a game that privileges the Ed Cowans of the world! C'mon. This is the game graced by aggressive spirits like Bradman, Sobers, Richards, Lara. Don't reduce it to stereotypes.
The issue with Test cricket is - its ambassadors always make the most cheesy, sentimental case for it. While, in fact, the case to be made for Test cricket is a LOT stronger
The defence of Test cricket is simple. It IS Cricket. Cricket is a game played with a red ball. Where you need to bowl a side out twice to win the game. Period. That's it.
If you change that fundamentally as is the case with limited overs cricket, then you shouldnt market it as cricket. Let T20 try to survive without the brand of cricket to back it. Let it survive as a separate sport
Of course there are many other virtues of the red ball game. But we needn't bring those up in a clumsy way and try to beg for sympathy. The red ball game needs to be more aggressive and delegitimize the white ball game

  • @praveenupadhyay1415

It's so one sided, the game which could fade in front of games like baseball, basketball and football, has been brought to life (to the viewers) by T20. As an Indian, when we see test cricket, we love it when it is played and we keep track of score(even if it ends in 2 to 3 or 4 days), but that build the class of player. ICC's revenue is now more effort based, BCCI is must to be given larger share(in accordance to it contribute). -> You said this would kill world cricket. BCCI rose to power in last 23 decade(let's say) where was world cricket standard 102-30=72 years back. And also BCCI is just like corporate it has launched a better product which is loved(love for test is losing I agree, but test match is not just the cricket, it is a form of cricket). All greats know that test cricket build class, ask then you fools. So whenever they would stop performing they would emphasize more on test training).
You heard Harsha Bhogale, "How you say a 15 yrs old to come to watch 5 day cricket". Do you realise what you are then trying to brainfeed by this irresponsible documentary. You said cricket will fade eventually, I say air quality and world will fade eventually, that's evolution you need to understand basics of it. If it is to evolve let it.
At the end you glorified COWAN, but for a viewer who didn't knew COWAN(because during his time I stopped watching cricket due to education occupancies), I would say the game is getting competitive mate you needed to evolve with time. This happens to lot of players, you need to understand, it's the nature of game you chose to play. You face crticism you learn new things and then you perform learn from Kohli. Glorifying COWAN by the comparison to Warner is just like comparing the GOAT to an average player.
PS: Sorry if I hurt any cricket fan. You need to understand that BCCI will demand more share if it has developed game likings in its audience and bring the most share to your table. Because if our viewership is huge we pay for ticket, paraphernalia's, OTT subscription, Cable subscription to watch cricket etc from our pockets and if that is collected and drained out just because of equal share criteria it is injustice to the nation with viewers of cricket.

Embarrassingly biased doc. You can get fame for hitting big shots in test cricket, and you can honestly tell the ump that you dropped a catch in T20 as well.
These people like to add extraneous values and meaning to test cricket that doesn't exist and use that logic to say that it is superior to other formats.
It's just different number of deliveries, a red leather ball and white clothes that is different. Everything else is just rationalization as to why you just spent 40 hours to watch a draw.

Meh both formats are different games basically test is objectively more of a "test" and more strategical and is probably objectively the most tightly knit format of the game as the better team will always win but I don't like how these guys try to make it so T20 isn't even cricket much less a sport when even T20 has way more variables and strategy than any other major sport besides crickets own formats

This is one of the most biased and substandard pieces of journalism I have ever seen. The issue of centralisation of power is fair, but you've made no efforts to have any nuance about the subject. Test cricket is dying and for that matter, so are ODIs. T20s are the future, and the revenue they'll bring wi grow the sport and help athletes make a living instead of the classical high brow structure that has been prevalent.
This just seems like two upper middle class, white folks being pissed off that they can't hang out in posh clubs for 5 days and make a career out of it.
