Interesting idea. I use a 5/8" gasket cutter to make 12 gauge under-shot wads from cereal or beer box cardstock. You can make hundreds of them at a sitting and they are uniform in thickness. Add as many as needed to lift the shot column for good crimping. One of these as an over-shot wad can also help with uniform crimping. I'm not being a smarty, just a pro tip for a fellow reloader.

To level out your load height when shooting 1oz try dropping a spent primer in the bottom of the wad cup before adding the shot.

100% agree a wad punch would be best, and is my Go-to, but he was in the field and had spent primers just sitting there. @@thinkingbill1304
