Common Causes of Poor Fuel Economy

  • I often receive the question "why is my BMW getting such bad fuel economy". This is a very difficult question to answer definitively as there are many things that can play into this. After eliminating driver error I list a few reasons here that could be a possible cause. The ones I listed are all fairly simple to DIY.
I did not list fuel filter and fuel pump in the video however they could be the source of a poor fuel economy problem depending on the model.
    Tools and Products I use
Milwaukee Corded Impact Wrench 1/2 inch : amzn.to/2urnKWE

Could be a vacuum issue, mine had an issue similar to that and ended up being the valvetronic shaft gasket. In your case, if you start hearing a whistling from your engine, high pitched then it’s for sure a vacuum problem. Could be a valve cover, could be the valvetronic shaft gasket, could also be the CCV valve. It’s that circular thing on top of the valve cover. When it happened to me I also didn’t throw codes and started right back up. Eventually did get a code for system too lean bank 1- vacuum leak.

No.9: Driving style - if you are not driving your BMW like it should be driven, you are not driving it right. Also, I once asked my brother about fuel economy on my previous performance car, and he said if you are worried about that, get another car. A BMW is a performance car and should be driven as such, you don't buy it to toddle around town. And you correctly point out you should use premium fuel - 93 MON / 98 RON, as I did run on a lower octane in my previous car and used way more fuel. The N52, especially the version in the 330i is a sophisticated 3-cam head, where it has been designed for performance versus economy as the engine was designed to go in the 630i coupe a much larger car and still perform well. I spend about NZ$100 per month on my car given I don't drive it much at the moment so that is how I measure my usage, not by how much I use, but by how much I spend and if I can afford it, then there is no problem. So I just upgraded to the Performance Intake, Euro Airbox, and Silicone Intake hose in hopes of getting a couple better mpg. That's odd have you tried to clean Vanos solenoids? They're quite easy to do yourself just make sure to no lose the O-ring. I have a video on how to do so as well. Other things would be to clean the MAF like really drench it maybe even soak it (only the end that reads not the plug end) just make sure you don't let it touch anything else as they're fragile and expensive.

cold engine temp can also cause poor fuel economy. i mean thermostats that are stuck open causes engine to run cold basically on high speed like on highway. my bmw 320d e90 had both egr and main stats issue. coolant temp could hardly reach 60-65 on highway and mpg was like 7.8l/100km and even 8.1l/100km sometimes. so i replaced both stats and got coolant temp 86-88c which was enough to start dpf regen. drove on highway at 130km/h on 5th gear 3000 rpm for 45m. successfully dpf light gone, mpg to normal where it should be 5.5l/100km. Very satisfied with the work done by myself though it was not not that easy. so guys, if you have mpg problem or dpf if it is diesel dont forget to check coolant temp test. lots of videos out there on youtube on how to check coolant temp on bmw without coolant gauge. if your coolant temp below 80c then there is problem. so hope this helps. Cheers:)

I just found a *fucked* DISA valve on my E90 (N52B25). No codes, no nothin'. It was ready to fall apart.
For some reason you don't get much warning of this other than physical symptoms (no power, bad fuel economy, the "death rattle" - if you can hear it), I suppose BMW thought sending an open loop servo control signal was good enough (servo motors have internal feedback loops) and saved a wire there instead of running feedback.

Worst case could be blowby at pistons or burned valves if performance is waining a bit as well. Check positive crank ventilation /induction system for signs of oily/sticky sludge on back of throttle plate for visual that exhaust and oil mist is being burned by the engine. Overfueling because injectors are too dirty or are not operating properly can ruin an engine in several thousand miles if in detected. You can sample the oil also - if it smells like gasoline, you have gasoline blowing by the piston rings and thinning the oil. Find the cause of the overfueling before continuing to drive at all. Change oil immediately if you have to drive even short distances to get it looked at.

7.5 liters per 100km on highway... 13L flooring in city... Want less? Buy diesel. Or install LPG

Some of my family lives in Australia and when we talk about cars its always fun trying to convert liters per 100km to MPG. That actually really good fuel economy especially considering hard driving. According to google I do about 11.2 liters per 100km combined.

Have you guys seen the way 99% of BMW owners drive? Should be looking at less than 15 MPG.

@@flying541 ...not oil leak outside engine... means oil going inside the sensor and making no signal.

I had terrible fuel economy until I discovered this one brilliant trick, urination. I urinate in this special jug called the "piss jug" and then pour it in to the fuel tank. Works wonders, been doing this for years, and my father did too, its a family tradition one could say. Urination, its God's own source of nutrients and wholesome well being.
