I'm always amazed at what Nadia could do on the floor. I don't think gymnists today understand how hard these skills were to do on the equiptment they had back then. Floors with no spring, beams with no padding. The fact they made it look so pretty and efortless is amazing.

Im old enough to have watched Nadia when it was "live" on TV ( yes, I'm friggin ancient-lol) and to this day I get goosebumps when I see the old clips. The gymnasts from communist countries had pressure on them that others cant relate to. Even in that atmosphere Nadia dared to show personality and a love for the sport. There was just something special about her........

i can watch this repeatedly and I grew up with Nadia back in the 70's. As a matter of fact I was a big fan of hers before the 2976 Olyimpics, and I followed her in Skien Norway in 1974. but in the 76 olympics, she shined. perfection. but she's still the only female gymnast to win the European Gymnastics Championships THREE times. in a row. Perfection. Watch her beam routines. she never looked like she was going to fall off....like you wonder about so many gymansts today
What I always loved about Nadia is her smooth flowing cat-like grace, ...most gymnasts nowadays do this silly 'popping' when they are moving and it lacks any real fluidity.
Thank you for posting this-Nadia during the 1979 Euros-her triumphant comeback-and after she had physically matured. A little girl at Montreal and here she had blossomed into a lovely young woman-she had gained so much more power on her vaults too! I so wish I could see Nadia's AA competition at Euros-that was her shining moment imo-right up there with the Olympics since it showed her doubters she was back after her subpar 1978 Worlds and with a vengeance-in top form.
Supreme gymnast - grace, elegance, power, perfectly proportioned physique, pretty, charming and utterly delightful - don't think you can improve a lot on that!
Comaneci was the one gimnast.. she is the example of a great athlete, great personality, originality and charm she was just enchanting and lovely, besides her spectacular abilities
A double pike on a primitive mattress! It's barely an extra layer of cushioning between the gymnast and concrete... and Nadia did a double pike. Still considered a pretty difficult element today. Well done.

The one thing I really notice with Nadia is her body shape. She doesnt have the heavy muscular shape of a lot of female gymnasts I see around now. She had a very beautiful small figure and I think that helped her stay light on her feet.
Try doing a double pike on wrestling mats... The floor back then was un-sprung; totally dead. The tumbling they do today is mostly possible due to the incredible repulsion you can get from the springs now. It was a totally different apparatus back then (like UB.)
I actually also love that gymnast that got quadriplegic because she wasn't healed from the hospital and they didn't let her heal. Yelena was a very beautiful girl in gymnastics, and won over Nadia at one point.
The judges always low balled her on this routine. I have to wonder why because her tumbling was not easier {contrary to popular opinion}, her landings were better than those of contemporaries like Shaposhnikova and Nellie Kim. And her dance&choreography were quite good.

But then, with G W Bush as the illegitimate President, I am becoming accustomed to that feeling. Yes, her physique totally changed. She sent through a growth spurt and put on a lot of weight and several inches in height. This naturally affected her performance level. However, she got herself in hand and took off that weight and totally changed her persona, becoming a beautiful, graceful, womanly performer, She had the absolute guts to go to Moscow for the Olympics and did well. However, her career was practically over after she made that change.

Everything is so fluid. Today's routines are so robotic and choppy, and there are so many long pauses taken between spins, tumbles, etc...

Her grace is so superior. The only one of todays gymnasts I can think of who has a similar grace is Viktoria Komova.
