John Williams' superlative music turned a cheeseball outer-space western in to one of the greatest hollywood blockbuster franchises of them all. He is Star Wars, pretty much.
I assume superlative is a good word because I don't know what it means.
If were talking about the greatest Hollywood blockbuster franchises then #1 would go to the MCU and #2 would be Star Wars at #3. This list is based off world wide box office grosses.
@@Fitchy-ke3wz Yeah, superlative means something like "the best" or "above others", so yeah, it's a good word.

I was getting worried that John Williams may not be around too much longer to compose great scores, then I see this and he still looks bursting with energy and very capable. Age truly is just a number. Looking forward to his next score.
They need to convince him to do Indy 5 - if they ever make it.
Honestly if Indy 5 is ever made I could see that being the last film he composes.
Gage Brumley I believe Episode IX was the last movie he composes for. He’s retiring.
He will write and conduct until his health prevents it. The force is strong within him.
@@draketurcotte4760 He's still slated to compose for Indy 5. As long as they don't take another ten years to make that movie Williams should still compose for that. He has just said he's no longer going to compose for Star Wars movies. I'm sure we'll hear his epic music for a while yet.
Seeing JJ Abrams and Mark Hamill both tearing up when Willaims plays Leia's theme is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Also, Spielberg there supporting both JJ and John is so wholesome.
Sidious’s theme is so underrated, way better than the imperial march, which is the propaganda theme, Sidious’s theme is the true evil unlimited power theme, and everybody knows it.
Star Wars without John Williams would not be Star Wars
The fact that after God knows how many times I've watched these films, played the games, listened to the books and I still get a big grin when I hear the first few bars of the Star Wars theme is a testament to how legendary this man's talent is.

Composing music for nine movies, three trilogies, over the span of 42 years. DAMN

I was five years old in 1977. My (much) older brothers took me to see A New Hope when it was just called "Star Wars."
When it was over one of my brothers asked me what I liked best about it.
Five-year-old me replied "The music."
And I've been obsessed with the music of the movies ever since.
Yes. That film looked as if the film was set to the music. The music was the true narrative arc.
I was 11 and recall coming out of the cinema blown away by the whole experience. I did not realise then how much the score meant to the film. Pure genius.

@Stratowind agreed. Even though I would have preferred a May release date, but I unfortunately understand why they didn't.
Usually scores are the last thing to be completed because of any changes in picture lock such as last minute additions or subtractions to the film.
John Williams is not the glue that holds the saga together, he is the warm hug that makes you feel good and brings it all home. He obviously loves all the films and that’s good enough for me.
Of all the comments I read, this is the One!

I have to say, out of all the new themes of this trilogy, Rey's theme was my favorite. It was so whimsical, adventurous and everything that you would expect from her character.
6:45 That seems to be a different version of the scene on his monitor there. But I’m not gonna dwell on deleted scenes and alternate cuts... John Williams is a damn genius, and that’s an understatement. It’s heartbreaking that we’ll never hear him in a galaxy far, far away again.

8:04. This was my favourite moment from episode 9 hands down and it was entirely based on the music. My heart swelled when I heard it and saw Luke finally lift the x-wing out of the water just as Yoda had done.
Agreed. The way John Williams was able to reinterpret his music for these parallels in Episode 9 was absolutely amazing.
In a college composition and theory class in the early 1980s my professor, himself an accomplished composer, told us that the closing score for Close Encounters of the Third Kind was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, orchestral composition of the 20th century. I think he was right.
And the works of this Master have proved time and time again that he is genius.
I agree with you. The music Maestro Williams made for the end credits of Close Encounters is so overwelming and full of beauty that in the very first exibition in Rio the Janeiro all the audience stayed till it ended and then applauded for about 5 minutes. I know cause I was there applauding too.

Just remember this might be the last time that John Williams ever composes a film!
So I'm going to say this before it's too late,..........to John Williams, The Sound of Cinema!
He’s a modern day maestro, we all are lucky to have lived when he did, to see his amazing genius come to life.
Some years ago I paid my respects at the funeral of a young man who died in tragic circumstances: the final piece of music was John Williams' theme from Star Wars. The sister of the young man told me he had such happy memories of going to see the movie as a child.
A Note to you John Williams naysayers: First off, NO ONE can replace him. Who says so? His 52 Academy Award nominations and 5 oscars. ONLY Walt Disney has more at 59 nominations. He has been composing for 70s years for movies and television and has more experience than any movie composer living and dead. Sure, someone can start writing in his place when he stops but no one will match his accomplishments. I am always amazed at the jealousy and desire to belittle his work. I think most real musicians recognize his amazing and unmatched talent but some still feel the need to say something negative.

What a legend!!! John Williams is one of the reasons I compose symphonic music. 27 symphonies in and I still don't have half of this guy's musical knowledge. Brilliant, just brilliant!! Thanks for posting this!!!
OMG, this video is so emotional for me. I fell in love with John Williams's music when I went to see 'The Towering Inferno' with some Sunday School girlfriends way, way, way back in the day. Four notes. Four notes that wailed, "PERIL" at me. The music made me feel stressful, unsteady and in danger which is what it was supposed to do. 'Jaws.' Two notes (eventually a third) that spelled a painful, bloody death that you won't see coming until you're missing a few vital limbs and bleeding out in the water. Then came this: 'Star Wars.' This triumphant, trumpet blast of a military overture that promised we were going somewhere to experience things we had never seen before. Ever. A film score has a HUGE obligation to the audience: to warn us, to cheer us up, to comfort us, to feel like a familiar friend and our most dangerous adversary. It tells us when to be scared and when the coast is clear. It dive-bombs, shoots a magazine full of bullets and whispers the grief of loss for us. John Williams has covered all those emotions, and then some, with such deft and precision. And humility. Well done, maestro. Well done.
Master John Williams' thanking the orchestra one last time really had me in tears, man... Not only a genius, but also a humble and caring human being!
The last great ‘classical’ composer whose work is accessible to the public. When he is gone, no more

John Williams is one of the few people I would like to say "thank you" to. I have way too many positive memories that revolve around the music that Williams came up with. This is with both friends and family. I still have pleasant memories of my sister taking me to see the a New Hope when it first came out and then rushing to see Empire with friends. Yes some of the Star Wars movies are better than others but I enjoy his music in them and all the other movies he has done. It will be a loss when he quits making beautiful music but it will last forever in my mind when I watch these movies over again.
After time I even appreciate more this movie. I know it's difficult to be liked after such predecessors but this movie is brilliant.
What an absolute gift to humanity he has been.
God bless this man. He changed my life for the better. Without his music my life wouldn’t be the same.
I straight up cried when the same part from “Yoda and the force” was in the new movie. And I learned an arrangement of Leia’s theme on alto saxophone and played it as a solo for OSSAA solo/ensemble. I was set to go to state for it; however, it’s most likely canceled due to the Coronavirus
I love how music also tells a story without spoken words.
