My trip to Giverny was the highlight of my Paris visit. I took a bus tour to the garden, and it was a overcast day of light rain. Surprisingly, that worked out really well. The cloudy sky actually made the colours of the garden more vivid, and the drizzle wasn't heavy enough to spoil my enjoyment. What it did mean was that the gardens had barely anyone in them... and that was a magical experience!

If I may add a small remark about the "gift shop" at Monet's house and gardens: When you finish looking at all the souvenirs, have a look at some of the old photos hanging on the walls (in particular the one above the entrance to the gardens), and then look right up at the huge windows in the roof. You will then understand that this "gift shop" was actually the workshop Monet built to paint the eight "Nymphéas" (water lilies), now hanging in the Musée de l'Orangerie. Although he designed and created the eight "Nymphéas" paintings to be hanging in the two oval rooms of the Orangerie in Paris, he never saw the final result as he died a few months before they were installed.

I arrived with my family well ahead of opening time. The ladies heard our voices outside. They ushered us inside. “Come in-we have two buses full of Japanese on their way!” We had Giverny all to ourselves. Of course the pond, bridge and water lilies were wonderful.

This is exactly what we tell first time visitors to France to do: take a day trip to Giverny, then go to l'Orangerie. It makes the art you see ever so much more personal and approachable to see the actual location first. Plus the size of l'Orangerie is just perfect - not overwhelming like the Louvre. Another one-two idea is to visit Conciergerie to learn about the fishmongers' wives and the French Revolution on day one, then head out to Versailles, to see how the Kings were living, which prompted the overthrow. The contrast will explain it better than any tour guide.

After watching (and loving ❤) your videos for the past several years we finally made it to Paris this past May (2023). We are huge fans of Monet so of course we had to visit Giverny, the Museé D'Orsay and the L'Orangerie. While we absolutely loved all those places the true highlight for me was the Museé Marmottan Monet. The Marmottan isn't the most centrally located but we had no difficulty getting there by Metro and a short easy walk through a lovely park. They boast the largest collection of Monet's works including one of his most famous "Impression Sunrise". They also have a lovely collection of works by Berthe Morisot on the top floor. It's not usually crowded so one can really take the time to appreciate the collection. Thanks again for all your hard work and dedication. Your fans really do appreciate and use your recommendations, I know we did!

The Lillypads at the Orangerie is a fantastic story.
He painted them as a gift to the French people after the Great War. His friend, Clemenceau worked with Monet to secure the Orangerie space, he actually wanted to put a lift in the middle, so one could emerge in the middle, but it didn’t happen.
Money was pert near blind from cataracts, and it was a truly amazing feat for a near blind man to finish.

This day trip was my dream when I first planned to travel to Paris and had to cancel at the very last minute because my mother called to tell me she was dying. Everything had to be cancelled immediately and it was a huge disappointment. But what was so moving to me that Christmas was receiving holiday cards from every B&B owner that I had to cancel with -- I called each one to cancel and apologize -- including a woman in Giverny -- and explain. How very, very kind - every one sent cards -- unforgettable generosity of spirit. This is on the list and perhaps next year! Thanks so much for the beautiful and informative video, Colleen and Antoine!

I'm glad the trip to Giverny is a bit more straightforward these days. I've gone twice and both times the bus from the train station was dicey. LOVE Monet's gardens at Giverny!! Both times I've been though, we had to wait in LONG lines to get in. I'd very much recommend buying tickets online BEFORE you arrive; both times we went, we had to wait OVER an hour to get in. Also, I'd like to second the advice above to go early to avoid the crowds! Another museum for Monet i recommend is the Musée Marmottan Monet in the 16th arrondissement near La Muette on line 9 . Its a very quaint little museum with a lot of history to the building and a nice collection of paintings from Monet and other impressionist artists that rotate seasonally. It's also next to the Jardin du Ranelagh, so there is a nice little park to relax in before or after visiting the museum.

One nitpick: Napoléon III (not Napoléon I, which is what "Napoléon" without modifier is usually taken to mean) did have the Orangerie built, but he certainly wasn't alive during the 1920s when it was converted to an art museum. At that point Napoléon III had been dead for five decades, and the more famous Napoléon had been dead for a century. (Napoléon II, who never really reigned, had been dead for nearly a century also, fwiw.)

It seems a lot cheaper to do this day trip myself rather than with a tour group direct from Paris after watching this video! More croissants to buy for me with the savings!

I have the "Monet Cookbook" with this kitchen on the cover. And one of my bosses used to attend the Versailles Giverny dinner in NYC. Big event $$ raising. This was a great video🥰

We joined a viator small group to Giverny in 2017 when we were in Paris. The driver/tour guide is a painter himself, he took us to a hill on the way to see the source of Seine River. After an early morning visit to the garden he took us to the church where Monet was buried. When we were back in Paris in the afternoon he said you should either go to Monet Museum or Orangerie Museum and I chose Orangerie! What a wonderful day! Thanks for the video, now I have another option to go to Giverny. I am think maybe spending a night there next time if I can go by train….but heard there is no hotel in Giverny?

Whoops! Was so enthralled that I forgot to gives the thumbs up and had moved on to something else.. Have been thinking that I need to make a trip in the spring in order to visit Giverny one more time. I like to go to Paris in November-December when the place is closed. I got a photo of the boat, and I found it so poignant to think of Monet actually in it. Went to l"Orangerie last December and also enjoyed the works of artists that were downstairs. Thanks!!

Another great video. I’m going in September and already have my tickets. Very excited! Only thing I can’t figure out is somewhere to store our luggage while we visit the gardens. We’re taking the train from Paris, stopping in Giverny then continuing on to Caen for several days. Did you see or know of someplace that stores bags?

Thank you, loved your video. We've been following you throughout our Paris trip. We noticed you had drone footage in your video, can you fly a drone at Monet's gardens?

Antoine and Colleen, I am interested in art, architecture and, of course, French food. Would you consider doing a video on Paris restaurants that feature unique art & architectural settings? I have researched a few in prep for my upcoming trip (Beaux Art at Le Train Bleu, Art Nouveau at Restaurant Poulette, Art Deco at Le Dome), but I would love more recommendations. Thanks for your consideration. BTW, I am addicted to your videos! 👏

Wonderful video - clear directions and inspiring. Just a suggestion - can you do a brief write up of instructions that people can print off and have with them on their trip? We’re in Paris in September and I’ve booked your recommended Seine dinner cruise and made reservations at two of the restaurants you recommended. We’re booked at La Chambre de Marais (where we’ve been a couple of times while in Paris and second your recommendation!) we’re going to tackle taking the Metro from CDG to the hotel for the first time as we usually take a cab after a trans-Atlantic flight, and I’ll have to watch your video a few times to get it right. Written instructions would be a huge help! I’ve printed off various pages in your guide for this trip - going to spend some time in Montmarte.

Lovely place to visit but how you - or anyone - could find “a sense of tranquility” with virtually thousands of other people in close quarters is beyond me. I particularly remember the unique shade of green used on the house’s exterior’s details. “Giverny Green,” peut-être?

Hi there, found your page and am hooked. I am in Massachusetts, my daughter and I am visiting Paris between 9/13-9/16. Of course this is the first trip for me abroad and am looking for some of the places to visit. I am 74 and am in good health and am able to walk, but, I am 74. Where would you suggest for us to stay, moderately priced. Not holding you to anything. Thanks again,

If you only have the day of arrival to Paris to go visit the gardens (it’s their last day open of the season), how would you recommend going about that? I arrive at 6am and can’t check in to my accommodations in the 5th until late. Is there a luggage locker you would recommend using? Merci! Your videos are incredibly helpful and make me so excited to visit Paris!
