Hate to be the one to tell you, but if you look closely at 3:00, it appears that stripped out bolt has reverse-threads. You hit it with an electric impact tool turning the wrong direction and that is why it stripped out. Not the fault of Harbor Freight. I imagine both of those bolts are threaded in a direction so that when the handle is loaded against them and pivoting, any torque imparted from the handle to the bolts is in the direction of tightening them and not loosening them. Well thought out safety aspect of the design. Look closely at 3:22 and you can see one is cut with right-hand threads and the other cut with left-hand threads.

The handle bolt he stripped you with the impact, thats obvious. the stuck piston should have never happened.
I've got the older grey 3 ton low profile jack. For about the last 6 months occasionally I've had the small piston get stuck down on mine as well. I found tapping it lightly with a hammer would get it to pop back up. I finally took mine apart today to find the sides of the pistons gunked up with dirt and debris. A simple cleaning and reassembly fixed mine. I've had my jack for about 6.5 years now.

I have a little aluminum HF jack that I've used off and on for years. At some point one of the plungers stuck. I think I took it apart, cleaned it and reassembled. I don't remember the exact process. I only get about 50% lift with that one, and think I need to add oil. The larger steel jack has really been beat on. I think it also got a stuck plunger, but I was able to simply hit it with some spray lube and tap it enough to break it free.
I had the exact same problem for several years. I found a solution that didn’t require taking the entire thing apart. First, jack it up all the way. Then unscrew the filler screw. Put several ounces of new oil into the cylinder. Then put the screw back on so that some air and excess oil can escape. Then let the jack down all the way. The stuck piston will pop right up. Then tighten the screw.
The bolt problem is USER ERROR. Same exact thing happened to me, when removing that bolt the piston pushes and angles the bolt as it comes out if you aren’t careful (like here) and use an impact it will strip out the threads. I fixed my jack by welding the hole and tapping new threads. Piston problem can be from not bleeding before using. Manual states this.
Mines seen a couple uses and I went to release witht the shaft turned left no dice. I pulled it out and it flipped up vertical under the truck. Trying to figure out how I can lower the truck now
The stock piston return springs are undersized for the application when dust and contaminates get involved. I upgraded larger(thicker) springs and haven’t had any further issues.

Exactly this, i used the heck outta mine in the ne and fl when i started doing roadaide assist. Nowdays id rather work with smaller floor jacks and bottles, keep big one garage
Mine did that, same piston and all. It was happening fairly often so I took the chrome cover off the spring and wrapped a couple zipties around the roller on the handle and through the spring to pull the piston back up. Been like this for almost 2 years and hasn't stuck a single time since. Is it right? No. Does it work? Yes. Does it suck that sometimes you have to "make shit work"? Yes It's a small price to pay when you pay less than half of the price of the competition's item.
yes these larger ones have this problem and it does develop over time usually not 5 uses only. I was always able to use a pry bar to get it unstuck. stiffer spring may be the solution for sure. however I stopped buying these for that one reason, they haven't changed for a long time regardless of paint or naming. I do have the aluminum with 4 wheels not 3, it has been doing well in all ways and seems to be lasting better.
Sorry to hear your having the same problem i had. I let my neighbor borrow my jack and he brought it back that way when it was working just fine before he took it. I thought the piston shield *dust cover* was bent because if i pryed up on it. It would start pumping back up again. So i removed it with no luck so i ended up wire tying the roller to the spring underneath the dust cover so when you raise the jack handle it pulls the piston up. Its been working fine like that but i wished it would have lasted a little bit longer next time ill just get the 1 year warranty😅. You should try the blue 3 ton aluminum jack ive had better luck with that one.

Did you oil and grease it before using it you always should I have the same jack and haven’t had issues with it I always oil and grease right out of the box on any jacks
If you look at the bolt on the right hand side, it looks like a reverse thread. It appears the reason it is stripped is because when removing it, you were tightening it! It would make sense using a left hand thread on the right side to ensure it doesn't"t loosen as you pump the handle.
It's pretty clear from some of the very astute comments that Harbor Freight should label a bolt as reverse thread to prevent owners from ruining the jack. I had a 1959 Chrysler New Yorker where the wheel lugs on one side were reverse thread, but they were so labeled. It was one of those behemoths that had a push button automatic transmission. That car was so long I could park it and be in two different counties at the same time.

I have two harbor freight jacks. Both of them were great. Use them all the time. I know of shops that use these frequently. In fact that's all they have and they work just fine rebuild kits for them or the same as pretty much any of the other jacks that are out there so the jack problem the piston problem was probably just something wrong with the piston needed to rebuild kit or something and can't complain about their return policy. 1st Jack I bought from Harbor freight like this one of the plungers stuck and I couldn't get it unstuck the 2nd Jack did the same thing. But I soaked it with blaster upside down and it finally worked.
all these quick lift jacks tend to to that. either the there is a spot that got bent in or a bur inside stuck easy peasy. Ive been selling tools for 35 years. Paint that jack red and its 500 on the snap on truck same jack.
If ya dont like it take it back, not?¿, i get a warranty with everything they provide one or sell on with and for. When you go to take it back if it was paid for anyway other then on a card or mobile. They will give you a store gift card for the value spent + taxes, and a new warranty can then be applied on the new box again!
While it might not be the same one,I just bought the 1.5 ton aluminum racing jack,…first thing was it did not rapid pump, second was it was good for 3 times and then as I was jacking up my car it collapsed and the car fell real hard on the jack…it completely failed ….I have an old 3 ton pittsburg jack that I’m gonna try finding seals for,…that jack I had for years and it never failed me till it got old….idk I’m just not impressed with this new stuff anymore
Same here. The aluminum jacks are all junk. I lifted my 1940 Pontiac coupe once then it failed. After having it a few months I was very disappointed. Thought since I lost the strength in most of my right arm this was something to help me when I needed it. Now I have the one shown here same color also. So far it has done the job,but will never fully trust it.
I also have a green 3-ton version of this jack, same thing. Same piston is stuck down and won't lift. I don't think Jon has abused this jack (as someone commented below) as I have not abused mine either. And his still looks as new as mine. I only use it on my cars and none of them are over 3 tons. I use it to lift the cars and put jack stands under them. But yet, here I am, searching to see if there is a fix to my jack that won't lift due to a stuck piston. I guess we know why they went on sale. Maybe they knew this would happen?? Anyways, I continue to see if there is a fix as I can't believe in less than a year my new jack is busted.
Id pb blast it, heat it with a propane torch, and tap it with a hammer if i wanted to try and save it. Or just take it back and swap a new one for that one as others have said.
It was. I got it because I saw several good reviews on it. I may have just got a bad one but I think it's more their quality control....or lack thereof.
I guess I've been lucky. I have one of the big orange ones. I've had it a good 15 years & heavy use. All I have ever done to it is add some fluid & bleed the air bubbles. I believe they were making them better back then trying to compete with other brands. Its been a good one.
@Jason camp crystal lake Voorhees It's a good bit older than 15 years old I'd say there bud, but your rite I just a few years back replaced the same pitsberg white and orange one that was a hand me down from a guy who used to own his shop in san bernardino. That thing was used and abused and still was better that the 3 ton new grey shitsberg at harbor freight now that just shit the bed on me too! Id say that was about a good 20 years old the orange jacks with the white handles if i had to guess...
@@tammeraeads7850 yes, orange with the white handle. I just used it the other day to pick up a food trailer & remove the wheels before that used it to change brakes on an expedition. It still works great. You're right it probably is around 20 years old. I've had it a long time for sure.
@@BigAlWillis Yeah, you are right. I’ve had my orange one for over thirty years now (bought it back around 1989) and another one I bought maybe 4 years later and both work like champs. Now I am not what you call a pro mechanic and only use them to change my oil, and brakes and such jobs to keep my old cars on the road, but still I think they suit me fine after all these years. It doesn't have to be in the box unopened I bought a pressure washer last year and didn't like it it didn't perform well and it was less than 90 days and they gave me money my money back. That's the one sucky thing about Harbor Freight sometimes they're quality control isn't the greatest and you really need to buy their one or two year extended warranty which makes it not as great a deal but it saves you.
Same thing happened to me with the stock piston on the one and a half ton aluminum Jack and I bled the air out and made sure it was full Jack oil the Jack worked okay for a while that's what the Pistons got stuck down I had to check my vehicle up they get the tire off I had to use a hubcap hammer The pry piston up I cleaned up the piston can I put a little Jack oil on it so far it seems to work okay Harbor Freight sell some real crappy Jack's they ain't worth the money that you pay for them judging by the comments all and all it sounded like the problem is with the stuck piston and that should have never happened
I'm not a professional mechanic but i do use hand tools daily. No matter my career I doubt I could ever justify spending $ on snap on. Great tools but they've taken advantage of brand loyalty and priced accordingly. Icon is great price for better than average quality tools. To each their own but I'd be embarrassed for someone to know I paid for Strap On tools.
I would buy another Daytona 4 ton Jack get the warranty and then take this one back to exchange it for a new one with the warranty you will end up with 2 floor Jack's in the end and they will be good floor Jack's looks like this one was returned by somebody else after they messed with it
I had the same common problem with this jack. I just flipped the jack over soaked ite piston with a penetrating gel let it sit and tool a large screw and simply Popped it back in place. It has worked fine since
Interesting failure I have 4 of these 4 ton Daytona floor Jack's and I have har mine for little over 3 and a 1/2 years now and haven't had a single issue looks like you got a defective unit 🤔
Hate to break it to you but I know how that problem happened you over loaded the jack and you spun out the bolt with an impact. I had that same jack for ten years and never a problem. I have worked with those jacks and the only time I seen that happen is when someone just reafs on it and exceeding the tolorances. I think if you spent the money on the 3 ton Super duty with a 3 year warranty you would have a new jack.
Looks like somebody messed with this one and returned it and harbor freight just put it back on the shelf because they returned it with the box then you bought it
I know I'm late to the party here but we used to have an old old HF floor jack with the dual pistons like this. Every once in a while one of the pistons would get stuck down. To get it back up we'd smack it down further with a hammer and then it would pop back up on its own. Pretend you're tapping on a valve spring.
Used mine 10 x in 2 year span I got the two year warranty mine broke one month after warranty safe to say I’ll be only be buying jacks from Napa now their warranty is legit .
There's a reason why they are cheaper. They want you to buy their warranties. Then, they simply return your money and you have to stay over. You pay for the privilege to return items at HF
How do you get online a damage the reputation of a company by your mistakes. You stripped it and you're now complaining about the product and company. Its a great product.
All the boat problem is something you caused, but the piston problem is a common problem that happens with all those jacks. They're they're easily fixed. They make rebuild kits for them all the time. You just have to rebuild them. And harbor freight doesn't manufacture anything. They outsource it to somebody else and a lot of times they will go to where name brand manufacturers are are having their stuff done and outsourcing the same product. And if I'm not mistaken the jack the Daytona jack is manufactured by the same people who manufacture the snap-on jack. And this is. This information comes from the lawsuit that snap-on sued harbor freight over and it came out in the lawsuit that there was the same manufacturer. It wasn't even snap on. It was manufacturing it so the quality jacks. You just had one that had a a piston problem. No I don't know how you going to fix that bolt but if you can fix that bolt you can rebuild that jack that piston
am a 35 year automotive tech. I have been a big customer and advocate of harbor freight for many years in the past. In the last 2-3 years, I have really nearly quit buying from them. They have gotten too big for their britches. I DO NOT trust their vehicle lifting and support equipment.
some of these daytona jacks look like the pittsburgh ones and I know they fail religiously. Keep in mind you can't just open the box and use any jack, you have to bleed the air bubbles out prior to use else failure will occur eventually
I’m sorry to tell you, boss man, but that has reverse threads on anything you get from Harbor freight I strongly suggest you getting an extended warranty
I just rebuilt two of my floor jacks this weekend. Different brand but same concept. Much of what is wrong with your jack is self damage. The stuck piston is from you trying to lift in excess of the jacks capacity. It's there as a safety measure. The stuck piston will come out if you remove the bottom bar and use the back of a hammer. I just did this on two jacks, very easy. The screw you removed in front of the piston is never meant to be touched. It's how the weight max capacity for that piston is calibrated. I think other posters covered the stripped thread issue. The jack can be saved but would need some experience and tlc to come back to life.
I went through 2 of them in one day. 1 out of the 2 did the same thing yours did straight out of the box. Wouldn’t even hold my son up let alone a car. The other wouldn’t pump up at all. I had over 2hrs road time between the 2 returns as it’s 30min from my house. After I returned the second one they asked if I wanted to try a third time. I was so pissed I told them to shove them jacks ware sun don’t shine. I ended up buying an old 3 ton Napa jack from the 1980s at a swap meet and haven’t looked back. It works way better than any new one out there. About the only thing I’ve had descent luck with from HF is the Pittsburgh ratchets and sockets.
@@JohnSmith-xu7ev yep. On both and added jack oil with stop leak. Didn’t make any difference. I think either the pistons were bad or the inner seals were blown. After I had return the second one a guy out in the parking lot told me that he thinks that that store was putting returns that should have been sent back , they were putting them back out on the floor.
I have a tire shop where i live and they use these Daytona Jacks all day every day including outside in the rain and zero problems. Just got a Daytona 3 ton this Christmas and it lifted up my car sky high like it was nothing. You are doing something wrong with these jacks.

So, user error breaks jacks.
That looks more like operator error
ive had my orange harbor freight jack since 1986. It will still lift the front of my tool truck. Harbor Freight has never told me no. ever.
Given this guy is unable to identify left handed threads, he probablybshould not own a jack or attempt to use one.
Id pb blast it, heat it with a propane torch, and tap it with a hammer if i wanted to try and save it. Or just take it back and swap a new one for that one as others have said.
I got the same jack and I bet the fuck out it and it works great ,I even have the cross beam on it ,no issue
CCCP lover. I have 3 jacks over 60 years.
I thought those jacks had a couple years warranty on them?
The right hand bolt is reverse thread
I was going to but a datona jack, now i wont be skipping that extended warranty.
I bet that stripped that bolt at the factory.
Did you ever fix it mine i use it likke 10 times and it did the same thing
How you strip this bolt i strip were the sparkplug goes in the head of my ford expedition 20 yrs ago using a impact drill....lol😅😂😅😂😅
Why heck, I am getting up in years myself and I think I may just pass them on to my grand kids!
@@donjohnson3701 someone told me years ago after use before you put them away give it a couple pumps to keep pressure. Said it makes the seals last longer. I do that too.
It doesn't have to be in the box unopened I bought a pressure washer last year and didn't like it it didn't perform well and it was less than 90 days and they gave me money my money back. That's the one sucky thing about Harbor Freight sometimes they're quality control isn't the greatest and you really need to buy their one or two year extended warranty which makes it not as great a deal but it saves you.
well pump try to take one back.
@@assyholey4224 Yeah I did take it back It was opened and used once
@@darrenporsch well pump had it 4 days HF said no returns.
@@assyholey4224 I would have went online to the online customer service and complained they'll usually help you out
Same thing happened to me with the stock piston on the one and a half ton aluminum Jack and I bled the air out and made sure it was full Jack oil the Jack worked okay for a while that's what the Pistons got stuck down I had to check my vehicle up they get the tire off I had to use a hubcap hammer The pry piston up I cleaned up the piston can I put a little Jack oil on it so far it seems to work okay Harbor Freight sell some real crappy Jack's they ain't worth the money that you pay for them judging by the comments all and all it sounded like the problem is with the stuck piston and that should have never happened
I have a strongway 3 ton jack that has the same issue.
Wow at the threads being stripped
He stripped them. that side is reverse thread
@@robtdougherty okay
I would buy another Daytona 4 ton Jack get the warranty and then take this one back to exchange it for a new one with the warranty you will end up with 2 floor Jack's in the end and they will be good floor Jack's looks like this one was returned by somebody else after they messed with it
Stripped threads are better than no threads 💯
That's whybinalways get the 2 year replaced program on that stuff take it back and exchange it even if there is nothing wrong with it
I had the same common problem with this jack.
Looks like somebody messed with this one and returned it and harbor freight just put it back on the shelf because they returned it with the box then you bought it
Just get the big blue monster jack
I know I'm late to the party here but we used to have an old old HF floor jack with the dual pistons like this. Every once in a while one of the pistons would get stuck down. To get it back up we'd smack it down further with a hammer and then it would pop back up on its own. Pretend you're tapping on a valve spring.
Used mine 10 x in 2 year span I got the two year warranty mine broke one month after warranty safe to say I’ll be only be buying jacks from Napa now their warranty is legit .
Now you know why stuff is so low priced from HF.
On my daytona 4 ton jack the handle will just fall to the ground. Im returning it.
Go with O 'Reilly auto parts jack. Gives you a three year warranty!!!
That right side is reverse tread.
I was about to go buy one of these BUT this is the 2nd FAILED DAYTONA jack video i have seen both 2 months old!!! Both piston problems. 😮
Great video on YOUR mistakes
Operator error.
Thank you for sharing. I will stick with my 1980’s sears craftsman 4 ton beast😅 … I was close to buying one of these new models … 👎🏽 NOPE 🤔 …
am a 35 year automotive tech. I have been a big customer and advocate of harbor freight for many years in the past. In the last 2-3 years, I have really nearly quit buying from them. They have gotten too big for their britches. I DO NOT trust their vehicle lifting and support equipment.
My 3 ton is locked in up position.
some of these daytona jacks look like the pittsburgh ones and I know they fail religiously. Keep in mind you can't just open the box and use any jack, you have to bleed the air bubbles out prior to use else failure will occur eventually
Chinesium Quality anchor.
I’m sorry to tell you, boss man, but that has reverse threads on anything you get from Harbor freight I strongly suggest you getting an extended warranty
90 day warranty is pretty poor consumer laws. I wouldnt buy much new if that was in my country, better off buying used.
I had to tip on mine with a hammer
i heard this jack was made by the same company that makes snapon jacks same model also i just bought one
They look identical, but Chinese reverse engineer every great American invention!
BS
I heard your dog made a pie for you to eat.
I love mine ,sorry yours failed ,I just bought the aluminum one today
You took an impact wrench to a reverse threaded bolt
I dont used my jack 2 times 😂
Word of mouth spreads quicker than advertising. Based on this & the comments, I'll never buy one.
You buy cheap, your getting cheap!
Wow a 6 hour explanation. Btw used mine for 10 years
I went through 2 of them in one day.
Did you bleed the jack?
@@JohnSmith-xu7ev yep. On both and added jack oil with stop leak. Didn’t make any difference. I think either the pistons were bad or the inner seals were blown. After I had return the second one a guy out in the parking lot told me that he thinks that that store was putting returns that should have been sent back , they were putting them back out on the floor.
@@bangs2ndshotgarage865
I hate when parts store employees do that, or they take a part from a new pads then you buy it and its missing shims
China junk.
I have a tire shop where i live and they use these Daytona Jacks all day every day including outside in the rain and zero problems. Just got a Daytona 3 ton this Christmas and it lifted up my car sky high like it was nothing. You are doing something wrong with these jacks.
First time seeing this...HF warranty bullshit
