Solo Overnight Hammock Camping - Bushcraft, Foraging for Wild Food to Eat
Vložit
- čas přidán 8. 09. 2024
- I head out into the woods for a solo overnight camping trip with my hammock and tarp. Using Bushcraft, I build a primitive basket from natural materials found in the forest. I then use this to forage the area for wild food and edible plants. Being spring, there is plenty of wild food out there to help add to your meal when on a camping trip or even in a survival situation. I then set up my hammock and tarp, and start a fire using a primitive bowdrill method. I boil stinging nettles to make nettle tea, and live off the land for 24 hours using wild plants that I foraged in the woods. Thanks for joining me on the adventure - Mike
* NOTE - When foraging, always be sure that you can 100% identify a wild plant before you eat it. Be sure to cross reference and triple check the ID of the plant.

Really enjoyed making this one. I delved a bit more into primitive basket weaving, foraging for wild edibles and bow drill fire. Big thanks to you guys for joining me on the adventure! - Mike
Thanks for having us along.

Enjoy all the work you put into different camera angles! Excellent!
Mike, you and Alec should make a machete to go with the hatchet and lignin steeler. That would be awesome!
you have such great videos and nice quality carry on keeping up your hard work
Nice to get a mini movie .I know some people don't like them but I Sit back and enjoy nature vicariously . I am old and fat and cant get out there anymore .
Great video Mike , just a tip for everyone if you pick the dandilion leaves when their very young you can make a vinegaret salad from them . Fry the leaves in light oil then add vinegar and sugar depending on taste. Also the nettles can be used as weed killer , pick a large bunch of nettles and leave them in a bucket of cold water for a couple of weeks ,the water will slowly turn dark brown then it can be used .
Today it's sunny!!! Here too!!! Cheers!!! 🍻!!!
I love the silence in the beginning of your videos , it’s cathartic to me.
USA here...love dandelions...my grandfather use to make dandelion wine...enjoy your vids....thanks
The birds want to salute you... Hey! honeys a great HELLO from Barcelona!!!! 🕊️🐦🦅🦉.
I find I watch your videos over and over, I just love the combination of education and entertainment.
I'm italian and I look every single your video. Thank you, thank you for all !!
A handy tip Mike for transporting wet gear home is carry a couple of large bin liners with you. These will keep any wet gear separate in your backpack.
Mike
The dandelion piece took me back to my child hood back in the 1960's my friends father would pay us to pick dandelions for him then we would sit there and watch Him eat them out of a big bowl with tomatoes he grew in his garden come to think of it his name was Mike! As well ha!
He was a Renasance Man like yourself made his own wine and made beef and pork sausage with his hand grinder, fascinating stuff as a kid.
No one does those things any more. love the basket we have vines like that all over our property have to give it a try.
All good stuff thank you so much
Pretty big vine for a basket. :D
I don't think the no talking parts are intros, to me they're the main content of this channel and what got me here (back then it was the camp building ofc).
I feel it just gives me as a viewer a bit of the experience itself, even though I cannot really experience it for myself where I live because German forest protection laws are super strict.
Little bit of caution with dandelions, they are toxic - especially the stem which shouldn't be eaten but also the leafs shouldn't be taken in huge quantities (especially for kids or pets).
Thanks for giving the nettle some love, kinda sad it got such a bad rep.
I was lucky enough to have a woods near me to enjoy as a kid in 80s 90s and I always used put them sticky buds (as I used to call them) on my friends :D
thanks for the taking us along, take care
The whoopie slings are so handy. I've been using them for the past 3 years now. The only thing I did differently was, I used the original Hammock straps as tree hungers. By pulling them through the Hammock making a small loop, cutting the rest off. With that length double over tie the ends together and then place a series of knots up the length so you can adjust the length in more stages.
But more to the point yet another cracking vid Mike.
Have you burdock there where you are? When you get stung by nettles, smash up a burdock leaf and rub it into the area where you touched the nettles. The juice will neutralize the sting. Here in the Midwest region of the US, you seldom find nettles without burdock nearby.
Thanks for the great vid! I was processing dandelion flowers for jelly as I watched. 🙂
When you were first gathering supplies for the basket, I couldn't figure out what you were doing. I loved seeing how it came together!
Such a relaxing video. Took me back to my childhood, playing in the woods, getting stung by nettles and cleavers sticking to our socks.
We used to snap the Dandelion stem and dare one another to lick the liquid inside, it was said to make you wet the bed if you dared to lick it.
Thank you for another enjoyable video. I could listen to the birdsong all day 🌈
Dandelion heads right off the stem are delicious. So good.
Dandelion salad is also quite tasty.
Thanks for the video.
Super peaceful woodland. Impressive weaving!
Superb, I have to say I do like the silent starts that you do and great detail showing us what you do and teaching how to do it. Far better than words, also you way yo remove stuff from your pack and give us a double take on what it is. You certainly have a knack of doing this. Great video
So calming and stress relieving watching these videos
Dude, you put out quality videos. I had a terrible day at work, and unwinding while watching this was the best medicine a boy could ask for.
Same for me had an long nightshift at work and coming home watching this before bed helped me relax :)
i love boiling my nettles and drinking them in a tea and eating them as a cooked green. Very very tasty.
Hi Mike, thanks for all your videos. I really enjoy camping and fishing so you have the right combination here!!
I love the way u just stopped and came up with the idea to make a basket. I thought that was realy cool. It’s amazing what u can do with such little supply’s. simple but very effective. Love your videos. Keep doing what u do best. :)
Very nice bushcraft video. Enjoyed the edibles lesson. As far as dandelions are concern they were standard salad greens for me growing up as my mom had to provide for her children alone on a very limited budget.
Great video, after your first review of the DD products I've since purchased their Front line hammock, tarp and under blanket. Definitely worth owning and a must have for every outdoors person!
This video was so great! The basket turned out awesome and i was happy you got the bow drill fire going too! Nicely done!
I've got a very similar sleep system to yours, except I have the Travel Hammock. It's the same as the Frontline, but the base is waterproof so it can be used as a bivvi if there are no trees in the campsite. Excellent video, very interesting, especially the foraging bit in the middle. Thank you.
I have this same backpack and adding a chest strap makes it a lot more comfortable with heavy load 👌🏻Savotta makes them great!
Who's still here after 50mins? Have a good weekend people :)
Somewhat new subscriber here. One of the things I love is the variety of no commentary / commentary. When you go into a no commentary bit for a spell its calming, almost like we're out there with you!
I REALLY appreciate you doing this video in particular. Hammock camping has always been a mystery to me. Now not so much. Thank you
No problem, hope you enjoy it
Really enjoyed the basket weaving segment. Looks therapeutic! Thanks for another fantastic video Mike - your editing is inspirational!
you have not been camping long have you.......
in the woods you have to do three portions of porridge as bears tend to roam in threes.
mummy bear, daddy bear, and baby bear.
good post have subscribed, did not know you were here,
You live in a tropical climate! Here in Sweden, halfway up to Murmansk, it's more birch, pine, fir, and snow/ice. We do get our summers, that's true, and we love those two days every year... Ok, I made some of that up, but not by much!
you are very welcome, enjoy them. The rye one is my favorite!
Thanks Mike. If you're interested, the "Primitive Skills" channel is also good to watch for bushcraft skills. They utilise a lot of bamboo for all sorts of creations.
i liked the style of the first part . reminded me of the early Almazankitchen vids
Great lil overnight vid and good change up with the hammock! 👏🍻⛺
I love foraging! We have a large property and it's wonderful to make a salad with greens from our garden and then send the kids out for purslane, fillaree, dandelion, and even some wild herbs. It teaches them skills and it helps us appreciate what we have right in front of us. To anyone interested in foraging I recommend you get books that are specific to your own locale/geography as plants can vary wildly (pun intended) from one part of the world to another. Great video!
Really appreciated this video Mike,I went round all the charity shops last week to find a wild edibles book but they didn't have any,i did manage to find a tree identification book which i am currently reading through.cheers for the info Mike
all ways a great video. thank you TA !!!!!!
If you get dandelion leaves BEFORE they bloom, they aren't bitter. Mature dandelion roots for tea. 👍
Thank you for teaching me the ways of plants now I know what to do if I’m lost in a forrest
A comfy Hammock instead of a sleeping bag on sticks!?!?!? Someone got spoiled LOL!
Looked like good fun, Thanks Mike!
Lucky Jack is a great Norwegian craft beer. 😋🍺🍻 Love it. Great video btw!
Sometimes, i appreciate the silence, that way, i can hear the sounds in your forrest. Thank you for another relaxing video
Thank you for this wonderful video.
You're videos are so clever and interesting Mike.... You're very clever.... they are so relaxing as well brilliant kero them coming.
Love the videos!!! I would love for you to do a video on after the camp! Like how you clean, dry and store your gear after an outing! Cheers!
Loved this video and very interesting about the plants, such a wonderful basket x
Excellent video! Thanks for letting us tag along on the adventure!
Getting home from a long day at Uni to find a new TA Outdoors upload always brings me back to that feeling when you got home from school as a kid and ran off to the forest with friends to try and finish off that den! Love your stuff, Mike! Keep up the good work!
years ago; after a full day working for a nearby farmer, my hubbie was allowed to sample the farmer's home brew of dandelion wine; his pride and joy. they drank & talked a while, then it was time to go-
and that's when it hit him...
I'm glad you eventually showed the plants you were harvesting and their use.
That was a great looking hammock/tarp setup. Also the segment on wild edibles was great. Only suggestion would be to make some sound/music/talking at the very beginning so that we can adjust the volume accordingly, so that when you do start talking we can hear it or are not blasted out of our computer chairs for having it set too high. Loved the video, Thanks Mike. Florida, USA.
Hi Mike. Awesome video......I really appreciated the plant information. Please add more information about wild edibles in your videos. I love the way you deliver information about useful topics. Thank you.
The goose grass in scotland.we call it sticky willies because as you say we would always throw it at eachother as kids.
Stickywillies
Also stinging nettles is called jaggynettles
Keep up the good work ta outdoors
La temporalidad es INCORRECTA!!!
I use a DD XL sleeve which stores both the Frontline hammock and the under blanket together. I have a regular sleeve with my tarp in it. and compression sacks for both.
Lords and ladies also known as snakeshead, adder's root, arum, wild arum, arum lily, devils and angels, cows and bulls, cuckoo-pint, Adam and Eve, bobbins, naked girls, naked boys, starch-root, wake robin, friar's cowl, sonsie-give-us-your-hand, jack in the pulpit and cheese and toast. The root of the cuckoo-pint, when roasted well, is edible and when ground was once traded under the name of Portland sago. It was used like salep (orchid flour) to make saloop - a drink popular before the introduction of tea or coffee. It was also used as a substitute for arrowroot. If PREPARED INCORRECTLY, it can be HIGHLY TOXIC, so should be prepared with due diligence and caution.
good video! can't wait for more! Cheers! Lynn XXX
Good vid :) personally I don't break everything down. I just unhook from tree huggers and the whole lot goes in to one dry bag and set up is reverse, much much quicker. Not the tarp tho! LOL
Excellent educatonal video. Two thumbs up.
keep up the good work i can see you really enjoy what you do im from Australia i enjoy your show ive learnt alot thanks
That basket was siiick
Thank you for the edible education ! That was fun . I really enjoy your videos. 😊🤗
Grrrrreat video ! I love the tarp and hammock set up. I've seen these shown before but you did a top notch demonstration of them. I understand it all now. DD's quality and attention to detail is very impressive. Love the foraging info too ! Look out MCQ !
That hammock looks really comfy.
thanks i enjoyed whatching your video.
greetings,, Kitty.
Lovely fresh content Mike. I like TA Outdoors because of this. Its about a wide angle about doing stuff outdoors. Greetings from Germany. Engin aka outdooraddict1979
If the basket was a little bigger, I'd rig it to the trees to sleep in - hopefully I wouldn't get forest bridded by Hawks🤗
Awesome as always. Thanks for the great content. You are by far one of my Favorite CZcamsrs that I watch, even up there with my gaming channels. I have learned so much from you, watching your camp updates and your off grid cabin, just great. Keep up the good work and I will keep watching and thumbing up. :)
Great video especially the part of the video with plant identfcation.
Everything you do on this channel is absolutely Amazing
No idea if this could help anyone but it helps me.
If heading out on a few day hike I always bring some wood that’s already dry and keep it in a bin bag so I know i will definitely have dry fire wood
superb video again mate,watching
ur videos recently has made me go and buy a hammock and got me back out wild camping, absolutely love it keep up the good work mate
After building that basket, I'd have been like, "Ok, that's enough for today. Time to go home."
lol Nice work though. So glad I found this channel.
Your hammock/tarp setup looks almost exactly like mine. I use it in the summers here in Oregon, hiking the high lakes at Three Fingered Jack.
Thanks for posting!!!!!
1) Puts water over fire to heat for tea.
2) Cracks open beer waiting on water to heat up.
lol
Just do it !!! Very good, my friend !!! 👍
Another fun video, thanks.
best part of my week....thanks for teaching & inspiring!!!!
After getting the bow drill to work you deserve that drink
Mike, do more over nights, can you do a tutorial of how to eat and prepare edible plants please.
Really enjoyable thanks
hello from the Philippines! love watching all your videos!
Great video as always. Im heading out on the 8th to do some back woods camping. Getting my gear list ready. Going to do some great river fishing.
I like how these are becoming more like a tv show but with a great, individual, all including big personality like ‘join me here after as we cook some more food’ awesome 👏
I realy enjoyed this video thank you! I am trying to learn those plants and roots that are eatable here in the USA around central FL. woud enjoy doing some bushcrafting and eating off the land .. make coffee and tea .... cook something over an open fire that I build on my own. that's the life. again thank you I so enjoy your videos God Bless you and your family
Pamela Gonzalez edible** not eatable
Thank you I don't have the best spell check so when I came back I seen a lot more that was not right, I'm glade TA knew what I ment ...hahaha
Happened to stumble upon your video and loved it.
But, it would be great if you would explain as you went along how you were weaving the basket, what you were gathering so that the people who didn't know could learn (ex: that the younger dandelion leaves are more tender and less bitter, the other plant was ( looked like) nettles.
Subscribed and hope to enjoy many more of your videos.
Sir, your advice is awesome
Another amazing video from mike😍
Great episode! Very informative. Loved it.
Amazing weaving skills. Loved it. Thanks Mike. This was interesting to watch.
Eeeek, a bushcraft-spider? Nope, a nice basket! 😉 Liked this video and the kinda silent intro. Thanks!
