DuB-EnG: DIY T6 Camper Van Part3 Electrics Installing Leisure House Service Battrery Split Charge

- The Eruo5 and Euro6 engines mean that alternators no longer put out a regulated 13.8 volts to charge the battery. Now, we have smart alternators that vary the voltage to improve efficiency... We are going to need a different type of charger, a DC-DC charger... This video shows you how to install an AGM battery into the VW T5/T6 van and a future video will show you how to wire up the CTEK charger.

This has been very helpful esp where to run the cable
Great to know 👍 thanks!!
Few CZcams Videos mention smart alternator and dual batteries. Many do bye a old type split systems. But whatever you have DC to DC charger system is best. But if you have solar there are system whit both. Great videos
Ahh thanks yes, the CTEK handles solar input as well as balternator input.
Nice video again mate. Giving me some good ideas and knowledge 👍
Aww thanks mate! That’s exactly what I’m lookin* for... sharing my life lessons with those that are interested...
Great video Howard, the bus is coming along nicely :)
We can’t wait to get it out on the road for a short holiday ... RIB seat coming this weekend, then I think we’re almost ready for a trip!
Nice for you to get into the electronics on this project.
It was an experience and an education... so I hope I can help others with this video... all the best Dim!
Just found you and I'm enjoying the videos. Just bought myself a T6 but will be getting the conversion done for me as I do not have the skills, knowledge or time to do it myself. Getting some great ideas from you though. Love the swivel seat. Does it slide back and forth like the driver's seat does or does it have to be locked in place while travelling. Also love the bulbs. You should put links to all the stuff you buy so that idiots like me can benefit from your knowledge. Thanks for the videos. Looking forward to the next one now that I've subscribed. 😁 Hi from Durham.
Hi Ian! ... thanks for your kind comments and following the channel... not all my videos are T6 related, I get up to a lot of mischief with other projects which I hope you’ll find interesting! ... my next T6 videos will likely be about CARISTA and I may focus in the roof a little more... I’m loving the scenic roof! ... speak again soon! All the best from south Gloucestershire! Howard
Great videos but a few words of advice, when disconnecting a battery remove the earth (negative) connection first, when reconnecting connect the positive first. If the earth is connected and the spanner you are using on the positive touches the metal bodywork, you will get a large flash as all the amperage in the battery travels through the spanner making it VERY HOT. You can actually weld with a couple of batteries connected in series.
Very, very good tips Martin!! Thankyou!!
Getting a bit bashed up is part of big projects.
This is monstrous... and I ache every day!! ... it’s gonnna be worth it!! ... big hugs to you Karen!! :-)
Finished my conversion last week. Decided to take a week off work as I was going in a camping trip at the week end. 12 hour days for seven days straight and finished on the Friday night and way in the van on the Saturday morning. I have the same battery and CTEK 250 under drivers seat along with RCD and 12v fuse box. It’s a squeeze.
Wow!!! Got any pictures?? Are you on FB or instagram so I can see your amazing creation?? Great work by the way!! You must ache a lot!!! Alll the best!! Howard
I was doing a build thread on the T6 forum but I need to update it.
Post a link when you get a chance... I’m keen to see the pictures! ... I just released the carpeting video... pffft.... that was hard work!
Getting there... brilliant :)
It’s been a really long hard road to make this camper van, we are so close now... just needs a bed and a kitchen! We’re still a couple of weeks away from the DS video, sorry... so busy right now!
@@DubiousEngineering Don't worry about it, you're busy:)
I hope you have a magnificent trip away and enjoy all the retro madness there!!!
Friend of ours had problems with their VW and the "smart" alternator when they added a leisure battery. The "smart" alternator could not take the extra work of producing the larger voltage and current full time :-)
Interesting to know... those smart alternators are made to be efficient, and save fuel... I hope this video is useful to those that are thinking of doing this...
Can you start posting links to the items you have bought, please?
Vids are great , planning on picking up a T6 in the next month or so.
That’s a good idea... I’ll take note to do that in future videos... thanks!!
I do so many of these at work its crazy nice work with the fuse on each end. Will that DC to DC charger thing work as an isolation solenoid?
Exactly that... the ctek charger will just take care of making sure the house battery is always fully charged! ... hope to wire that in this weekend...
@@DubiousEngineering nice!!
great video and not too dissimilar to my T5 project. Any tips on securing the battery in place? I went with a non AGM but low profile one
Hmmm... I used blocks of wood carefully cut to shape to “chock” my battery in place and insulate the terminals from the metalwork of the seat... check out my ctek install video... perhaps that has a little more detail
@@DubiousEngineering thanks, just watched it! Your rage when losing a washer twice was my best bit 😂
is this guy like the chunkier Darren Brown ? ohhh and thanks for the helpful video
I’m going to have to look up Darren brown!!
Dubious Engineering you kinda look like him but your voice is very similar, one question. Do you mount your splitter charger relay under your seat ?
Great Video as always. Working on a similar project I am finding these very helpful. Question: Does disconnecting the battery cause any problems such as radio security codes needed afterwards or loss of any other coding else where?
Nope... no problem at all. But, removing the drivers seat airbag connector and starting the engine will cause a fault that you have to have a computer to clear!!!
@@DubiousEngineering Yes picked that up on one of your vids. Like I said very useful and informative saving lots of people lots of heartache I'm sure.
Hahah... thanks Tony :-). I have a few more jobs to do on the van, but the weather has taken a turn, so it will be a few weeks before another van video... but plenty of other fun videos coming!!
So the grommet actually remains in it's original location but is used as a way through for the cable?
It was a question!
Exactly that!! ... the grommet is an outlet pipe for condensation from the heating system... just pop a small hole in the grommet above the outlet
@@DubiousEngineering Thank you! I'm hot on your heels and naturally will get my wife to do everything!
Nice video - However this split charge set up will not work on a T6 as the blue motion and stop start means that a standard split charger with relay does not allow for the forced low main battery charge (80%) to allow the blue motion to work (it charges up the battery when you brake and saves the kinetic energy, google it) and the much higher alternator voltage surges (from the blue motion) will damage the leisure battery over time, you need a proper B to B charger (eg Schaultd WA 121525 ) AND a feed wire to tell it when the engine is actually running - not just an ignition on wire (or the leisure battery and wires get loaded on cranking) - I have been struggling with this for several weeks now - and still no answer to where you can find a engine run feed on a 2018 T6! JP
Totally agree with you!! You need to watch my other video fitting the CTEK DS250 DC-DC charger... it’s working a treat and manages the leisure battery properly...
So much work for passing a wire through the bulkhead! Not looking forward to that. My T6 is pre-Euro 6 (through luck rather than judgement) so I won’t have the smart alternator challenge. How did you calculate your leisure battery requirements? What Wattage solar panel did you go for? Great job on the videos, that’s a lot more work!!
Very good questions!! I should go through my spreadsheets in a video!!
Any reason for choosing the lead acid battery over the LiFePO4 batteries that are becoming widely available? I'm planning my build and there maybe -ve's I've not considered, (other than price;-))
£100 for an AGM battery... £1000 for LiIon ... also, special charge controller required... 10x the price, not really 10x the value
