- The Steak Bake from Greggs is one of my favourite things they do. A steak bake is a bit like a pastie. Greggs steak bake is flaky pastry sandwiching a savoury beef and onion filling. Other bakeries make their own version of this and they generally call it something like a steak slice. Whatever you call it, steak bake is easy to make and is a very tasty snack.

I live abroad where any kind of meat pie is nearly impossibe, i sometimes dream of a gregs steak bake. Yours looked good ,so ill give it a go.
Good luck!
Why am I seeing this just now?!?!?! I used to live in England and I ate the Steak Bakes a LOT. I now live in Texas and... well.... yeah, I've not seen any Greggs or anything similar around obviously. I will try this for sure! Thank you so so so much Keef!
Good luck!
Try adding baked beans. OmG
That looks like a easy enough recipe...Thanks for sharing it! 👍🤩
Awesome! I've got to make this.
looks amazing keef .
Brilliant I think these are on the menue very soon.
Brill !!!! I'm just about to try this way 😁🙏 thank you xxx
We don't have this in the US. So I will definitely give this a try. Thanks Keef!
That looks really tasty. Cheers Keef!
Haven’t had one of these since we moved to the States in 2003! Can’t wait to make these at home!
We don't have Gregg here in Canada, but now we can have their steak bake! Looks like a nice lunch box treat. Always great to see Mrs Keef Cooks too.
looks yummy weldone chef 👏
Hi keef. Great video!!
This is one thing i miss from the time i spent living in the U.K..Definitely gonna make this😊
Wow! Keep dreaming about steak beak from Greggs as it's been ten years. Thanks ever so much for your video. Will give it a go.
Great video
Lovely!! I would add a little HP in the meat filling, yummy!
Takes all sorts!
No Greggs here in Northern Ireland, so intrigued to give this a shot. And Keef, if you don’t eat your crusts you won’t be fit and bonny when you grow up, my old mum says.
Too late to start now!
Ooh!! That looks so Good! I wish we had a Greg Steak Bake here in America but since we don't I am going to try your version of it only I will use a puff pastry dough I can get in a supermarket, I don't do Pastry recipes very well but I'm sure it will be close enough. Thank you Keef!! Your a Gem! 💎
Looks incredibly yummy....
Hi Keefy a very good clone that well done sir ! thanks , Ivan
Yeyyy loved this ,absolutely perfect.. do you reckon you could do a de constructed Big Mac and construct your own and I love Mrs Keef cooks review of your food at the end such a lovely couple xxx
I'll put it on my list.
Wow, that looked delicious! I've never had one before but I will say that yours definitely looked better than Greggs and it was fun to watch you deconstruct and remake it :)
I love steak bakes and now I fancy one. The chicken bake is nice too
Yes please
Been living in New York for 3 years, from Lincolnshire....I miss good bacon, good sausages, Cornish Pasties, Steak bakes and Scotch eggs. Anyway this channel has been a life saver. Cooked the Americans your roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, with all the extras. Went down a storm!
Ha just hearing of these and I find your video! I must try this!
This video was published on my birthday...the irony 💖
Happy birthday
Last time i bought anything at Greggs was two steak bakes every morning for an alchi i was nursing four years ago. I found there was hardly ever much meat in them, more a gravy slice and invariably years ago when i bought them for myself they were so bloomin hot there was no way I could get them down, the frustration of waiting for them to cool. I actually (having learnt to cook since the death of my wife three years ago) found my steak bake clone morphed into pasties via trial and error and a stunning suet pastry with Marriages (a Canandian brand) strong stoneground wholemeal brown flour. I seal my diced beef skirt in the frying pan, add all sorts inc balsamic vinegar, a little red wine and Kallo gluten free cubes (my cubes of choice) .... then its eighty minutes in my bench top electric oven, same as for my casseroles, theres no three or four hours. I just wonder how healthy the Greggs item is, salt etc?
Good to see your getting the hang of the Kitchen Magic lol
Hm. Portable beef Wellington. I could go for that.
That looks nice. I'll try making that. Or something like it when done 😅
Now there’s a thought!! Fish vol au vent style slice with a creamy sauce😋
Excellent onion chop!
Thank you!
Cheers colonel
Wow, that looks so good and flakey and savory!!!
When I'll grow up I'll chop onions like you! : D
Takes years of practice!
Definitely want to try your version. Any chance you could do a copycat version of Hollands cheese and onion pies?
Looks really nice, not being horrible but a seen another video and it looked like dog food being applied in the pasty, Wer as with this the meat an gravy look dark and gorgeous . Good work 👍🙂🙂
Yes they look much better than Greggs lol x thing i hate about Greggs is that advertise selling hot food but when you buy it ...it's barely lukewarm....i stopped using them....i asked them to reheat one of their cold pasties once and they refused because they weren't allowed to do it!!! x
I think that's something to do with VAT at different rates on hot and cold food. Or maybe the company protecting itself in case the reheating isn't done properly....
Yum 😁
Should try the Greggs chicken bake .... I'm convinced they use Heinz chicken soup lol
It always amuses to think I used to labor under the misapprehension that Heinz was strictly American products. Apparently the UK has more of the "57 varieties than we Yanks do here!
John DeLye pretty sure it’s a German company I’m guessing they have all 57 varieties over there lol
Good one Keef. How about Curry Bake & Chicken Bake? What sort of knife do you use for that chopping?
Chicken redemption at its best.....now I have to go shopping and make them.
I hate the food in Greggs ,but do have the odd steak bake though lol Good vlog Keef .yes they did look better ,and sure did taste better also .What a good job you got Mrs Keef to taste test Really needed a dollop of ketchup though
Brilliant, living here in the Philippines makes me miss some home food. Will get baking this week and thats on the menu. Great video and they do look 100 times better than Greggs. Dont tell Greggs though they might steal you away from us lol.
I love your paste what your gas mark
Ah I just came back from England and I tried those amazing steak bake! Can you post the recipe!!! Please
I can't believe I didn't do a written recipe for this. Gimme a few days.
Where is the written recipe?
@@Keefcooks Hey Keep where is the written recipe? Better get on it or I'll ask the "Missus"
I personally don't care for Gregg's anymore. The pound bakery is better, Lol and I will definitely try Your version, Keef :-)
Can you do the chicken bake from greggs recipe please :)
Yes please! 😊
Can you do video for crispy oven jacket potatoes please?
I'll put it on the list.
Well done Richard Branson you’ve done well
If you don't eat your crusts you will never have curly hair. well that's what my nana says. Love your vids keep em coming Keef.
My strategy worked - never wanted curly hair!
What electric oven temperature should I cook the steak bakes, please?
czcams.com/video/-chhgaBUaEc/video.html
Good work on the steak bake don’t particularly like greggs only go if I have too
When I think of bread, I think of France and Italy, when I think of meat, I think of Texas and Oklahoma, but when I think of bread & meat, I think of grand ol' England. Cheers.
From a Scottish Bakery :-)
Newcastle's not in Scotland 😀
@@Keefcooks Opps, think I've had too many nights out in the toon
keefy do you introduce mrs keefcooks in that elaborate way in other social events of life, too?
Always, Hubert, always.
make it a staple on the show, with every time more elaborate ways of introducing her, next time add dubstep and wear some sunglasses.
What brand puff pastry do you use for this? thanks!
No idea - probably the supermarkets own brand.
They do look better Keef. I know which I would prefer to eat, and it isn't Greggs!👍😋
Cheers Pete!
Just wondered if the instant pot can be used in place of a regular pressure cooker? Hmmm.
I've never used an instant pot but isn't it just a fancy pressure cooker? So yeah, you could use that.
100grams is 4inches Keef? Think you mean 100mm 😛. Another great vid.
Dang! Too late to change it now.
Hi Keef , Massive fan. Can you do a video of Grilled kidneys ?
Ermm, maybe with something else, it's a bit too simple on its own.
KeefCooks - devilled kidneys?
I also wonder at the profit levels of these things.
Just add chips peas and gravy 😍 Nuff said.... I know what's for eats next week.
Greggs must be post Sayers and rathbones cakes shops ?
Yeah Brenda - they kinda started to sprout all over the place about 20 years ago. From Newcastle originally, I think.
I went into one on breck rd when I took my mum home a few years ago and they didn't know what a custard slice was how sad was that🤦 on a brighter note I made the steak bake, added mushrooms (because I like them) and they were a big hit except for the middle child who is a fussy eater, they were fab with peas chips and gravy over mine on the pie for them, ........heathens don't know what soggied crispy chips are ambrosia from the gods 😍
OK so I don't have a pressure cooker, how much heat do I use for a conventional pan and when it looses water weight do I add more stock or water?
Just enough to keep it simmering, and yes, add more liquid if you need to.
I love how he talks shit about Gregg the whole time. My kinda guy, to piss with Gregg
Is this the same as a Cornish pasty?
@thesparkey2 Really not! www.theguardian.com/business/2020/mar/13/greggs-cornish-resurrection-sparks-consternation-from-locals
Greggs slices are never fresh, They are only baked fresh. These are produced in a factory, Frozen and baked off in their shops, They can actually be months old before been baked off.
One thing I don't call Greggs these days is bakers, It's all production line rubbish now.
TheWacokid1963 - couldn’t agree more. Never liked their bread
@msec Ses I served 4 years of my life training to be a baker and left the industry because of companies like Greggs, I left Scotland because I could not make any money as a Baker, luckily there were other countries who appreciated the art and paid well. Now all you got is is shit store made bread and steak bakes with beef made in pressure cookers with bleached flour to thicken the sauce
Didn’t know colonel sanders made steak beaks!! Where’s the Kentucky fried chicken
#1783 czcams.com/video/rdjWmMlaGCY/video.html
Very nice 🙌🏽 as you can see by my channel my expertise come in the form of rating or slating many foods. Keep up the good work
Why someone does not like this video?
Someone always dislikes everything!
Have u ever made pickled pigs feet or pickled watermelon rines would u be willing to try to make some my mom use to can them along with alot of other things but she's gone now an I don't know what happened to her recipes so if u could make a video of how to make them I'd be so happy
Sorry Theresa - never had either of those things, or made them, so I don't think I'll be doing it.
I put my hair in a bun Yesterday. That's why I no longer work at Greggs.
LMAO
They have just done a taste test on the Jeremy Kyle show, vegan V meat Greggs steak pasty, audience thought they were both tasteless ..
Didn't know Kyle was still going. Got to try these Greggs things though.
well done Tesco's.... but seriously well done to the guy, he just replicated something a professional bakery paid someone a lot of money to develop.....or did they? personally I would be looking to give a bit more depth to the filling because this recipe of pressure cooked beef with onion, Monosodium Glutamate (AKA beef stock) and flour does not float by boat, how about a slow cooked beef with onions, lightly roasted garlic, nutmeg and thickened up with a traditional roux oh and don't forget a dash or Worcestershire sauce. That's just exactly what I would do.
Yeah, the object wasn't to try to improve on it particularly. Your nutmeg sounds a bit unusual.
@@Keefcooks It works well with beef, gives depth to the flavours, for example Scottish Lorne sausage...spice is nutmeg and coriander... Don't forget Greggs is a Scottish bakery, they were a family bakery when i was serving my time and look at them now... that's why I questioned did they really spend a lot of money to develop that recipe, I doubt it really. You did a great job replicating it by the way.
Steak bake/Steak slice is almost a Puerto Rican Pastelillos de Carne (Empanadas). Check out the recipes for Pastelillos and you might find them much better than your Steak Bake!
Don't care really Charles.
I had forgot all about Greggs lol, your version shat all over their mate. Looked awesome, would be great with creamy mushroom and chicken pie mix also. Lovely. Cheers Moose.
Thanks Moosey!
5:44 How'd you do that Keef?
yeah that bit owned
By the power of CZcams....
“We lost 2 grams somewhere” err maybe in your tasting 😂
I make these with minced beef 5%fat.
just had a festive bake today, he lied, I had two... surely it is doable, I notice a yummy mummy does one, looks ok. But all these things need a blewerk's touch . lol.
OK, didn't understand much of that.
Americans need to eat more meat pies and miners pies! I am experimenting right now using deep muffin pans gluten free for a son! meanwhile, the other turnovers will be regular flour. Last time I precooked meat and veggies but this time I followed another receipe uing raw meat and baking in the oven. I hope they are good! Such a portable meal!!!! wonderful!
That's an impressive bit of reverse engineering!
Thanks Ben!
Keefy your using a blue board for raw meat!! 🤭
And I'm not dead. You seem to have mistaken my home kitchen for a culinary school. I know you're joking, but I've actually started using the right colour boards because of comments like this.
@@Keefcooks I use any board myself, I was just thinking what the majority of certain types would think 🤔 looked tasty.
It's not right seeing someone tuck into a steak bake without being appropriately dressed. Please pop the tracksuit on beforehand in the future, Keef!
Can hear a weird hissing/wobble sound on the audio, incidentally!
Done some frequency analysis and the bulk of the hiss seems to be in the 9k+ spectrum. If you apply a bandstop filter to your audio starting at 9khz it seems to remove the vast majority of it. Have made a quick video showing the difference using a spectrum visualizer, just editing and uploading it now.
I think the hissing was from the pressure cooker.
It's an electrical noise in the 9k-18k frequency range; I did hear the pressure cooker as well, but this seems to be something else. Just doing a quick video to highlight it, I'm confident that messing about with a bandstop filter will help reduce it significantly.
I've made a video showing the noise I'm talking about and what I did to the audio track to reduce it:
czcams.com/video/jqbwtfnZUZU/video.html
Put this in the description as well, but it's relevant: "9K may be too harsh of a filter, as it cuts off sniffs and echos (6-11k range); best bet would be to experiment with a spectrum visualizer open and see which setting does the best job. Using a bandpass filter to first listen to what is actually being removed from the audio track is always a good idea!"
Craig Jessup
Shound' nt you be cooking KFC sorry
@richard stevens I have better things to do, but here ya go. #1705 czcams.com/video/rdjWmMlaGCY/video.html
"it's like a pastie" the boarder agency have been informed, you're clearly not British.
What a strange comment. This is NOT a pastie - the pastry of a pastie is folded over, and really shouldn't be puff or flaky.
@@Keefcooks he's commenting on you saying at the beginning that it was like a pastie but square😊
