    I’m saddened at some of the comments spewing negativity and vitriol over a product that most likely was never heard. What motivates people to talk trash? I honestly don’t think that I could have done a better subjective review of this product. And if I put on my electrical engineering hat and did a review of the circuit topology instead, people would be bored and similarly speak unkindly about that analytical approach. Can’t we just be grateful someone took their time and effort to give a balanced, honest assessment of their subjective experience to our community, for free?

    Thomas has done an incredible job bringing this together. Focusing on high quality components, a clear design goal, built in Canada, and for a price point of 1500 usd, is nothing short of remarkable. It will not be all things for all people, and requires consideration on pairing (as it should be). It’s a passion project that cuts through the ‘vanilla’ the majority of the market offers. I am usually hyper critical of amplifiers, but this honestly seems fair. If I were to build this amp at cost, I would be looking at about 150 for the transformers, 100 bucks for the pcbs, 20 bucks for the connectors, and 150 bucks for the enclosure. Let's just round up and throw in another 100 bucks for packaging and what not. That's 600 bucks just in materials. That doesn't include assembly time, overhead, nothing.

    Hey Jay - I really am enjoying the new format to your equipment review videos. You have always been very good at describing the sound characteristics and their good and bad qualities while also noting your own biases in the narrative. My own person audio journey growth has come from how you select the describe the pro/cons in the pairing segment. By NOW adding the equipment pairing with pricing groups, you are allowing for a bigger audience who are not as far along on their audio journey as perhaps you and I. One can now see a forward thinking manner how one can buying and selling their equipment also to get the ideal pairing….to get the best out the item being reviewed.
    With this much capacitance, Jay how is the base grip with this amp…. anything like Hegel?
    Jay can you address what is happening with the company Denafrips and why it is no longer being distributed by Vinshine. Is this change something your viewer should be concerned with? I know Vinshine had a very good reputation for customer service.

    @Jayiyagi: Based on a rudimentary understanding of power-supply/amplifier design, I don't think the entire 200,000ufd of capacitance is for "filtering". Some is, but some is also a reserve for supplying current when big demands are made on the output stages?

    • @Artcore103
      @Artcore103 Před měsícem +1

      it all does both, and that is always the case. if the power is going through capacitors, it by definition filters, and by definition holds available charge/current for instantaneous peak demands. the location of them (before the toroidal power supplies, or after) does make some difference of course in exactly how this all works, but they're still effectively always doing those two things. capacitance is also important if you're analyzing power output both in terms of continuous power output vs instantaneous peak output - and how long it can output a given power loud.

      Get some 5" FR drivers and mount them open, on top of some speakers boxes (angled back a bit) and with a woofer in the box. Put just an inductor on the woofer (and a small resistor if woofer is too loud). Connect the open FR driver directly, and in parl with the woofer. Or use old 2-way or 3-way speakers, and disconnect the med and tweeter and just use the woofer with the open FR driver on top of the box. Mount the open driver on top with modling clay or lots of Blue Tack (and later engineer a permanent mount if you like it). Good luck with that!😅 Best medrange you ever heard! Capacitance does not say much, given that there is enough. Those capacitors cost 50 bux maybe.... And stacking toroids on top of each other, is a bad idea, as they are in each others magnetic fields. More capacitance as needed will only stress the transformer more, for zeo benefit

    I agree that blue LEDs are too bright. I have them on other equipment and they are too much. Soft green or red is the way to go imho. I think that the logo not being centered has to do with the logo and name creating the shape of a galleon. Maybe a two or three mast galleon for a more powerful amp in the future?

  • @bruceandt

    Someone explain to me why a two toroidal transformer configuration @ 200 VU per needs this many capacitors? It’s nice to have power on reserve. I don’t get why Thomas just didn’t start with a larger transformer.
    Or perhaps two larger transformers. I find it all a touch confusing when all the reviews I watch on the TS A75 are only paired with smaller speakers. It does review well.

    • @MichelLinschoten

    • @user-od9iz9cv1w
      @user-od9iz9cv1w Před měsícem

      I think you touch on an interesting question. Does a bigger transformer with few filter/reserve caps sound similar to a smaller transformer with more caps?
      Both have an impact. Having both is likely good. It would be informative to experiment.

    • @superspeeder
      @superspeeder Před měsícem

      Transformers and caps will both reach a point of diminishing returns as they become oversized for the application. Oversized transformers don’t do much once they comfortably cover the continuous power of the amp.
      Capacitors bolster the dynamic power of the amp, allowing it to temporarily output more power than the transformers can supply; they store energy that can be quickly released and replenished to maintain the sharpness of transient hits as output levels increase.
      It also seems to be somewhat of a marketing move, since everyone likes the look of a big bank of caps. Still, I put more weight on capacitance than transformer capacity.

    Well Jay, I think this type or design of your presentation concerning the functionality of Thomas's amp is refreshing. 😂 My olny disparity is with the responder who insinuated the potential for negative interactions between the Triordial configuration and their being stacked "obviously" exemplifies its weakness and ignorance. To which I would say the Electrical Engineer Thomas works with is highly respected, highly qualified given the depth, breadth,and his Degrees not to mention his years of work knew full well the positive and potential negatives and thus their location would have virtually no decernable affect on any parameters one might hear that is unless their ears are as sensitive as a dogs. And as this arrangement con be found in numerous amplifiers across the spectrum. I do know some designers go as far as to encase there transformers in neutral polymers inside a non magnetic sleeve. That said they also are 30-50% more expensive and its questionable as to can your hear a specific difference based on that arrangement or dors the rest of their topology have a greater influence such as in Thomas's case. I would respectfully reply...When I returned to college at an age most are working on retirement I learned a great deal and it was an experience I will treasure and as great if not greater than I would have imagined. One of the lessons I learned was. The more I know ...the more I realized how little I know. Thanks again Jay I must say your approach has certainly matured and is much appreciated from your earlier review approach. 🎉

The Gallion A75, Parasound 2125 & the Adcom GFS 555ms. What worries me about the Gallion is the low power output @ 4ohms. Don;t know if the Maggies will be a good match. What to do???

    • @Jayiyagi
      @Jayiyagi  Před měsícem

      if you look at the impedance curve of the Magnepan LRS it stays pretty linear although it is quite low, hovering around that 2 to 4 ohm across the frequency spectrum.
      This means that you can make an "educated guess" that the Galion TS A75 rated 75 watts into 8 ohms, 100 watts into 4 ohms and no rating at 2 ohms might not be the best option for this speaker. However, it will still likely drive it in a small to maybe even a medium sized room at reasonable volumes.

    I'd like to see it compared to some of the quality implementations of purifi class D amps etc
    One it is massive and probably uses heaps of power(plus not putting out that much power)and secondly not sure why you want an amp adding a V shape signature. Use your EQ or other peripherals( tube/pre amp & speakers etc) to mess with sound signatures. If your amp can't give you a transparent and correct sound you never have the option to hear the music as intended.

    Whether listening to a perfect amplifer (out EXACTLY = in, just louder) or a mid range amp with minimal colouring of the sound. It is the sound engineers ears that we hear. I have no idea what the frequency response of my ears are. Does the engineer doing the final mix down take into account the frequency curve of thier own hearing and alter the mix to compensate? There is so much subjectivity involved in hearing that imho, once past the $1000 dollar mark for each item in the audio chain. The percived quality is down to EQ.

    I'm glad it sounds great, and I know Thomas put alot of effort into his products but the branding (naming, logo etc) and industrial design need a lot of help. There's not even consensus among reviewers of how they say the name: Galee-On, Galee-Own, Galee-Un. Too much silkscreening and bad fonts. I would love to hear the SE tube amp though, but a tube amp won't work for my lifestyle unfortunately.

    In your opinion, would the Galion TS A75 work well with the Magnapan .7 loudspeakers? I know they require high current and high wattage, but this seems to be way more powerful that makes it seem like it is at higher wattage.

    • @Jayiyagi
      @Jayiyagi  Před měsícem

      if you look at the impedance curve of the Magnepan .7, it stays pretty linear although it is quite low, hovering around that 2 to 4 ohm across the frequency spectrum.

      I'd recommend OA starkrimson for a more neutral and balanced sound with snappier/faster attack and decay
