- Hey All,
Today I wanted to discuss the pros and cons of sponge filters.
Sponge filters are some of the most affordable and popular aquarium filters there are, but are they all they are cracked up to be?
Hope you like this one.

Thank you answered a few questions i had,all the best.
Nice and simple especially for a beginner.
I love the simplicity of the old sponge filter 👍
I love simplicity also, so I use under-gravel filters in almost all of my tanks. Aside from gravel vacuuming, they have never required maintenance in my experience. I lose a couple inches of tank volume at the bottom and can't use sand, but air-powered simplicity and bio-filtration for days are the pros that make sense to me.
I use sponge filters in all of my tanks. and if you tank is well planted its no to hard to hide them
Good video Blake!
Good tip!
I have just switched to all sponges and it's so much quieter than hang on the back.
Very nice informational video here. I only have 1 tank and my 2 tubs running sponges and I have often wondered how to tell if they are clogged. The fellow that sold me the sponges on GumTree said that they never needed to be cleaned. Blacky told me that when the number of bubbles decreases to only 17 or 19 bubbles per minute, that is the indicator that it is clogged. Prawny says that that bubbles will turn pink when the sponge is full. So, good to know now that there is no way to tell. I guess that I should probably clean the super-fine sponges that have been running non-stop for the last 69 days. Eh.... Maybe tomorrow.
Lol sounds like shenanigans have been afoot with that advice
Best for shops that’s for sure
hey mate long time no speak. hope you are well
just set up and started to cycle my new tank it is using a sponge filter
Try leaving the filter air on while you lift the filter to the top of the tank and lift it out of the tank in a bowl if you do it right you won't drop anything back in to the tank
GOOD EXPLANATION VIDEO :)
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
Thanks
Hello Blake great videos mate I have been watching your videos for the last 2 months, just a question on where you source your filters? I have been looking on ebay but cant find the course filters like you mentioned.
those ones are from aquarium coop in america.
search for XY 380 Hi Flow sponge filters and they are coarse ones outside of the USA.
@@BlakesAquatics thanks for the super quick reply, I did see them and they looked course but wasn't sure, I will buy one and see.
@@BlakesAquatics Hello Blake, just got 10 Filters today, they were XY380 Hi Flow but don't require air stones, they are a bit noisy as the bubbles aren't as fine as the models that do use air stones, will modify one and see if I can get the noise down.
@@COLUMB01 nice one. Yeah i have cut the centre piece out and inserted air stones in them before
Tbh i like spounge filters for my shrimp
Hob for my betta and An internal filter for my 3ft
Thanks I like to stack sponge filters normally couple course not sure if putting a fine on top could help
The water would just take the path of least resistance so it would bypass the fine, go through the coarse up and out
Blake's Aquatics good point I’d never tried it 👍
They are ugly as sin and for the same size footprint, which is what is relevant in visually planning an aquarium, you can employ the Swiss Tropicals "corner filter". That will give you much more media capacity and when used with the "jet lifter" return tube, greater water volume and surface agitation. I can understand breeders and CZcams viewers with many tanks being attracted to the easy set up, interchangeability, and easy cleaning of the standard sponge filter. But if you want more, better, and more easily disguised filtration, give the corner filter some serious thought. Also, consider the same size footprint of a large and tall corner box filter, which will allow use of the large variety of physical and chemical media.
Great tips. I have run HMF and corner filters before but i found myself just never cleaning them.
They look awesome though and a definite win being able to hide heaters and any rings or carbon etc back there too.
I usually slip a 90 deg elbow over the uplift tube to get that directional flow 👍
Best filters economically but don't actually remove the waste from the tank which is why I always go with an alternative or a combo. 👍
fair comment mate
Dat mo
Cmon now, you know the SunSun HOB off eBay is the filter of choice!
My power bill is already bad enough without 40 hobs
And how do we tell when they are clogged xD and not working :P
By the water clarity
@@BlakesAquatics but you said the water wont be as clear as if I used carbon ;P
It wont, it also wont be as clear as a tank with an effective sponge filter if it is clogged? Not sure of your point?
@@BlakesAquatics i was playing the role of newbie fish keeper asking questions xD
Are sponge filters actually enough for filtration? Then, do we just waste our money by paying for Seachem matrix?
I believe so. Sponge filters have their limit but in either case i dont see what matrix does that warrants the price tag.
@@BlakesAquatics thank you :)
It's a love hate affair with them 🖖💞
I agree 100% 😂
For a fish room sponge filters are the only way to go unless you don’t care how high you power bill is. You can also use box filters with your sponge filters which has really good mechanical filtration and will run off same air pump.
Sponge filters are awesome. But for the record sumps are the best filters, just saying.
Adds up in power consumption with 40 return pumps though 😊
@@BlakesAquatics AH one big sump and one big pump.
Sumps are the best but practically can't beat sponge, I'm currently setting up a native nano tank with a DIY sponge.
@@justindawson3428 imagine an ich breakout 😳 if theyre all linked
@@BlakesAquatics Live life on the edge LOL
Not my cup of tea... Cheap yes but doesn't really cut it.. Ugly as hell.. Better off buying a cheap internal filter.. Canister filters all the way.. I get it if your running a fish room....
Agree with the sentiment but yeah for me power outlets are too many for my liking as it is 😊
