Watched this with my ex-boxer dad. In all my life, I don't think I have watched two men show such concentration, courage and skill. Pedroza was a dignified and graceful champion, magnanimous in defeat. For God's sake, he was a world champion for nearly a decade. Barry was terrific, as Harry said, an Irish Terrier, constantly on the front foot. I met him shortly after at a book signing. He stood and shook the hand of every person there, a wonderful champion and a great man. What a night, what a fight, what two great men. Harry's commentary was the icing on the cake.

@@glenshea1967 Barry was great for Irish relations bringing Catholics and protestants together.
He was my Irish hero when I was a kid.
I remember the devastating night I woke up about 2.a.m to watch barry fight Cruz in the sweltering heat of an outside stadium in the states.
The heat really zapped Barry's energy turning into bad night for Barry and all his fans.
It was the first night I cried watching a fighter lose.
I was only 7 at the time.
The next time I cried was when my favourite fighter Mike Tyson lost to Buster Douglas in Tokyo in 1990.
it was so unthinkable that Tyson could possibly lose and especially to Douglas.
Apparently Mike was so confident he'd wipe the floor with Douglas that his return flight home to the states was booked for an hour and a half after the fight.
I was so pissed with the ref for that long count.

I had the pleasure of watching this fight not long after with Barry going over each round and giving an analysis of each round. It was on the old VHS video machine and he would pause and rewind and point out shots where he was taken by surprise by Eusebio. It was a spectacularly technical fight. Both fighters boxed beautifully. The other thing I look back on now was how much of a deal they made about him being an aging champion. He was 29 if memory serves me right. Hardly over the hill.

McGuigan fought so cleverly that night. He was always just inside Pedroza´s reach, which made it hard for him and caused him to rock back in order to try and punch effectively. As he was also smaller than Pedroza he could also frequently come up at him with hooks unseen. Perhaps to non-boxers it all looked random, but McGuigan´s defence was also (mostly) superb, watch him move in the 15th like he was just still at the start of the fight. That´s how alert he stayed for 15 rounds to avoid the traps that Pedroza constantly tried to set.

Barry in my opinion never looked that great in his defences and Azuma chased without luck for a match to be made between them.

No the 115 degree heat and dehydration lost Barry that fight. He was winning it before the heat became too much. Fancy fighting in Las Vegas in the middle of the afternoon in that weather!! Whoever organised that should have been made to face Barry in the ring a few months after that fight!!

Pedroza was past his prime in this one obviously. All good things come to an end eventually. 20 defenses not too bad. Most on the road in enemy territory. A prime Pedroza would have won easily.

Pedrosa been in wars and it showed. Gotta eventually lose. Cannot beat father time. Hey, a champion 8 years and 19 defenses ain't so bad. Pedrosa lost on Irish turf. Would have needed a knockout because if he would have won a decision, it would have been worse than Haggler over minter with the violent crowd.

I remember when Barry fought Cruz back in 86. He had old school farts in his corner that still believed the universal myth of the time that we had suffered through in the fifties and sixties and even well before; that one didn't drink water on a hot day. It is a wonder more of us didn't die. I watched that fight and was screaming from the opening bell to the last bell; give him some water at the top of my lungs. Cruz was givin' plenty of water every round and splashed all over with it. How Barry lived and fought on I will never no but he got not one swig and was never splashed down. I remember sometime after the fight he said he hit a wall and knew he was in trouble. I don't think he ever knew his old fashioned out dated corner beat him. He had a lot of old school in him for his day. I had a strong will and was always the last to drink water on a hot day. I never knew why I was so exhausted after a hard event on a hot day. Even cool days. My friends too but they always gave in before me and even "cheated" during the event by taking water or sneaking it. By the time we were older the myth was destroyed and I always marveled at kids swilling water beginning to end. Poor Barry was in the wrong place with the wrong corner and I know it shortened his career. He was as pale as a ghost at the end and I was angry and hoarse at the end and broken hearted for him. A lion and tiger and no water. What a tragedy!!
