    Duran was still haunted by his infamous ‘No Mas’ surrender to Sugar Ray Leonard from 18 months before, while Benitez - still only 23 - was three years removed from his loss to the American superstar. The Puerto Rican was a defensive wizard, and was expected to display elusive tactics against the pressure of Duran. Instead, though, he went toe-to-toe with Duran, and defeated the Panamanian at his own game.
    “I wanted to beat him at his fight, to show him I was the champion,” Benitez explained afterwards.
    The scores were close in the champion’s favour - 145-141, 144-141, 143-142 - but the vast majority of observers felt that Benitez dominated. Mickey Duff, the British promoter, scored Benitez the victor by eight points whereas Duran was only given two rounds by legendary American trainer, Eddie Futch.
    It was expected that Duran - inferior in strength and speed - would retire after the fight. “I wanted to put more pressure on him but my body wouldn’t let me,” said Roberto while explaining his performance. boxrec.com

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
    Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

    The great Roberto Duran was outboxed by the great Wilfredo Benitez. Some people think that Duran was just a ferocious brawler with hands of stone, but Duran was also a great boxer with excellent defense. Benitez was a master of defense, and he proved it against Duran. Watch the whole fight, not just these highlights, and you will see how frustrated Duran became trying to hit Benitez. Even when Benitez was on the ropes, Duran could not rough Benitez up or land any clean shots. Benitez fought in the same era as "The Four Kings" - Duran, Hagler, Leonard, and Hearns. In my opinion, there should be "Five Kings" from that era, and Benitez is the fifth.

    Wildred Benitez MUST be included in the conversation when you speak of Duran, Leonard and Hearns - Benitez is terribly underrated. The only reason I didn't include Marvin Hagler is that he came on a bit later - Early on it was Duran, Leonard, Hearns and Benitez just fighting each other for the Welterweight crown(s) at that time - All (except Benitez) fought Hagler when they all decided to move up to Middleweight.

      @@keithlauderjr1691 I get that, I love Hagler, but Duran really should be Top Of The Heap among these names. He was a natural-135-pounder, 12 lbs below the weights of SRL and Hearns, 25 pounds less than Hagler. I know that Duran is considered part of “The Four Kings” (maybe Benitez would’ve been a better ‘fourth’?), but the VERY BEST Roberto Duran was sorta left behind when he moved up to Welter. He took one single, solitary loss at 135, a non-title bout loss to Esteban De Jesus, which Duran proceeded to avenge, twice, by the time he moved up. And he only moved up because there was more money fighting these guys who were now HUGE STARS in the US, SRL especially, than he could earn at 135.
      Duran, really, wasn’t the “4th king”, he was his own thing entirely. If he was American, he’d be considered the greatest boxer since Sugar Ray Robinson.

      It really should have been the Fab 3. If it had to be a Fab 4, Benitez should've replaced the classless Duran. Both combined for 6 losses in 7 fights against the top 3 (only Duran's decision in the first fight with Leornard). Benitez fared better than Duran (knocking down Hearns the weakest of the big 3), but he never faught Hagler. Duran showed no class in the Leonard fight as he did here in the Benitez fight. He lost 5 out of 6 to the other 4. I was a Duran fan, but he had no class lost respect, thus he got his ass kicked. So my Mt. Rushmore would include Benitez over Duran.

    I remember the fight, nice win for Benítez. Durán started fighting in 1968, this was his 77th fight in 1982. Arguably the greatest lightweight ever, he started losing when he got older and moved up weight classes. After his first fight with Sugar Ray he was 72-1. He gets remembered too much for the more famous fights as a veteran past his prime. Before that he dominated a weight division for years.

    Benitez's best victory. He was masterful in this fight. At this point in his career, Duran didn't have any legs. It would have been interesting to have seen them match up at welterweight. Benitez is very underrated, he was an all-time great. Incredible how most of Duran's career was remembered for what he did from the first Leonard fight, which happened 12 pounds over the weight that he fought at for 12 years. He fought for 33 years, but most fight fans think of him when he fought at heavier weights and was slow-footed during the last 20 years. His longevity competing at the high level that he did, coupled with the long dominance at his natural weight is what puts him near the top of the all-time great fighters list.

One thing that always amazed me about Duran, even too heavy and not in prime shape for a fight against a top guy like Benitez... what did he do to disguise that long overhand right that he could always nail guys with it? He hit Benitez with it cleanly a bunch of times and Benitez was a master at making guys miss. That punch ended guys at 135 pounds... Benitez was just too big. But man, how did he disguise it standing right in the pocket? Duran always amazed me because he was always right in the pocket. loyaldude10 His career was over when he was 25 because he had been fighting since he was a kid. No wonder he became the youngest champion ever at 17 and will remain the youngest ever because boxing no longer permits boxers to fight at that young age anymore. By the time he was 25 he had aged way beyond his natural years because although he was winning, the grind for such a young kid who wasn't fully developed yet was too much. Benitez is one of the greatest champions ever.

    @RobsterRulzDude0518 Před 6 lety +25

    One of Benitez's greatest victories right here. He was absolute prime-time for this one. Duran was alot stronger in this fight than he was in his horribly abused weight-drained emaciated physical bodied self from the 2nd Leonard fight. Benitez rocked Duran numerous times in this but Duran had no quit in him in this fight because like i previously stated,he was alot stronger and more properly prepared going into this than he was in the 2nd Leonard fight. I think though that Duran should've tried getting Benitez in the corner more often,and maybe then he would've laned more and been more effective overall but still,a very game and courageous effort by Duran. I think he rightfully redeemed his dignity in this fight.
    Going into the 2nd Leonard fight Duran had weight-drained himself in a very radically unhealthy way(230 lbs to 147 within 10 weeks) which causes great amounts of inner energy expenditure which is why he looked so nonchalant and casual in his obvious lack of fighting spirit right from the get-go in the 2nd Leonard fight. Also,draining massive amounts of weight so rapidly causes a tremendous drain on you're stamina and recovery abilities,as well as you're punch-resistance. In this fight though,Duran was a bit outclassed,but nevertheless,he was obviously alot stronger than he was in the 2nd Leonard fight. Thus why he was able to keep coming forward with constant energy and valiant effort,even though Benitez had his number.
