I was a concreter and steel fixer of 15 years. In my medical images, I look like I’ve been in a car crash, so I (sadly) gave it away to give mining a go. I’ve been working in processing for a bit over a year now. In my last job I was lucky to be home 8 days a month. Wifey didn’t handle that too well because in the short time that I was home, I wasn’t really home. I was always chronically fatigued, injured and preparing to go back in a day or two. So perspectively, being away for 2 weeks is nothing when I’ll spend equal time at home. Wifey loves it! And as for catching up with mates, my mates don’t actually exist so that’s good too! The job itself isn’t too bad. It’s pretty cruisey. A good thing about it is where I’m at, us processing and crushing guys do all the loader ops as well so that’s pretty mint! Mining is something that I never wanted to get into previously. In fact I used to cringe at the thought. But now with the physical state I’m in, it’s pretty much given me a second chance at life. But I know that if I ever had my physical health back, I’d be out in a heartbeat and going back to where I came from. Good video mate! It’s good to hear about other people’s experiences other than mine. 🤙🏻
Hey Keithy, mate i must say you hit the nail on the head in regards to catching up with people! With my work roster it makes it hard to catch up even making a quick phone call.
Hi Keithy thanks for busting all the myths. I did hear a story that at the airport all the taxi drivers were lining up to get a fifo worker in their cab thinking all fifo workers earn mega bucks and will give them a nice generous tip. As you said it’s not the case not everyone is 100k plus, only certain trades and skill base earn in excess of that.
Great honest answers 👌 Its easy for people to get the wrong idea 💡 I did an easy at Uni about the stresses of FIFO work. The time away from family and your community was a stand out issue when i reasearched it. Ie Hard to keep up a sport and the valuable connections that gives someone.
@@Keithy_Wdo you think a backpacker can easily find a fifo occupation (I’ve seen some announces also for casual workers without hr license)? I’m deciding to come to Australia or not next November, my whv expires the first days of December but I’m not sure to come. I’m 35 and if I will not do this experience in Australia I will never do no more.. Thanks if you answer ✌️
G’day mate, it’s unlikely you’ll find casual work in the mines, I’m sorry. To work on a mine site requires quite a lot of entry conditions, training and assurance before you can even begin work, so it would cost a mining company quite a lot to get you up to speed with the safety stuff before you even get the chance to work.
Do you think it would be possible to come from the UK for fifo on a working holiday visa and stay in hostels/explore on weeks off? Or do you need a permanent residence in Aus for fifo?
You’d be able to stay where you like in Australia and travel, provided you’re at the same airport each time to fly back to work. You may need to rent a P.O. Box to have an address if the employer wants to send mail. Where the mine flies from will dictate the city you’ll need to “base” yourself in.
G’day mate, most mining camps I’ve been to do have pretty well equipped gyms. I can’t say for sure if every mine provides them, but all of the ones I’ve been to have had them.
Is automatic transmission car available to drive at mine site or is it entirely manual gear cars , is driving licence an essential requirement for electrical engineers?
G’day mate, most vehicles are manual, however, a lot of mining companies these days are ordering automatic vehicles for their fleets. That said, there are only a handful of vehicles that are automatic at the moment. A drivers licence is not 100% necessary for the role of electrical engineer, but it’s likely that someone with a drivers licence will be favourable over someone without.
G’day mate, are you talking “local” as in Australia, or the town or city near the mine? I think the word “local experience” is pretty broad here! It does sound like they’re asking you to get a little bit of time and experienced in whichever role you’ve applied for. Or perhaps even some kind of training.
Hi keith, thanks for the video. You said that there isnt a lot of no qualification jobs ? Ive been seeing jobs on seek for nippers and drillers offsides advertised as entry level jobs with no quals or experience. I want to go to perth on a working hol visa and get into the mines. Im ex army and construction. Low skill set but lots of experience in hard physical work.
I think with great enthusiasm and passion displayed to the companies, you would likely be successful easily at getting the job you’re chasing, especially entry levels. There may be a bit of completion, but attitude and ability shows the real workers compared to the fakes.
Gidday Keith, mate have you got an email I can fire you through some questions on? Looking for some information on how to break into the industry. Thanks mate.
Hi Keith, I've watched quite a few of your mining based vids lately as I think the industry would suit me. Me and the fam are hoping to be over in Oz in 2024, we've already begun the visa process. The Mrs is already sorted with a job in healthcare, my current profession isn't on the desired skills list, so I'm hoping to get involved in something totally new. If the mining industry doesn't take unqualified workers, are there any quick courses I could do over here in England in prep for when I eventually do manage to get over there? Also, are there a few Poms that you know of that got themselves into the mining game? I imagine the banter can get lively at times, especially around world cups and the Ashes. Any advice is greatly appreciated mate, thanks.
G’day Mike, thanks for the comment mate! Good question mate, and congrats on the planning for the big move. Your last few months over there might not allow the time to get the qualification advantage when you get here. Do you have a general idea what you might like to do in the mines? There’s a broad range of things, and that will ultimately decide what kind of preparation you can do when you get here. There’s definitely a few poms in the mines - friendly banter when it comes to sport always add a bit of friendly rivalry at the bar!
How do you deal with isolation, if your a bloke with no children or partner. I guess making friends over there and potential people to go into town with and have a drink on the off week(s). Met any blokes on your travels that started a new life over there? Cheers. Odd question I know.
G’day mate, good question. I’ll add my 0.02 but I’m sure there are plenty of lads and lasses who can add their opinions too. Isolation and how it’s dealt with is different to everyone. I remember when I was a young lad and had no partner, I spent a lot of time on forums. I’ve made friends out at the mines who have become mates at home, likewise I’ve also made new mates from here too. It’s all what you make of it. I’m sure you’ll definitely make some great new mates when you get into the game.
For the second one they do accept people with no experience but only for TA work, I was super green with no experience and got into roller crew and now I’m doing constant shutdowns
That’s great to hear! What a gig too, you’d get to meet heaps of people in your travels. Shutdown work exposes many different plants, mines and opportunities!
G’day mate, as far as minimum requirement, that would be based on the job you go for. You can get a job as a cleaner with no experience if you so desire. The more you want to earn, the more skilled you’ll need to be. If you arrive with no experience you will spend time on the time getting training (provided you are successful getting a job)
OHS will dictate what you end up doing. Safety-wise, there’s only so much work the human body can withstand before breaking down. If you were wanting to earn millions of dollars, you could get a job at your home base and work on your weeks off, but I definitely don’t recommend it.
No mate, that’s not something any of the mines will agree to. In an average mine camp it costs over $30,000 to house and feed each employee on an even-time roster for 12 months.
