Welcome back to Explore Built! In this episode I walk you through my new Favourite 4WD! I bought this 1977 Chevy Blazer last year with the intentions of doing a full restoration...but things haven't gone to plan! In this episode we take it for its first trip over to Stradbroke Island and rip into the first modifications to this old classic!

I reckon make it a beach buggy type thing, set up purely for the beach. Board racks, no canopy, roll bar, massive whip aerial, big flares... etc. I met you and Nav at the show, nice to meet ya mate, you and Nav both seem like decent blokes, thanks for taking the time to chat.

100% y62 conversion 😂 would be a weapon. Definitely should keep the blue and white with all the chrome but all new full rebuild
I am normally the first to delete chrome, but it really suits that truck! I would stick with the colour palette just as it is.
Have to be Dana 60’s and a LSX 😮💨 hard top no top conversion with internal cage for protection. Don’t delete the chrome, that is iconic for that era car. Keep the colours as is. Maybe just respray it and bush wraps for some protection

More old school! I drive an 82 Cherokee daily, super reliable, and fun. Don't paint it silver and dont delete the chrome. The unique quality of these old cars are the effort they put into the chrome work and body styling. Every new car looks the same. Plastic and boring.

I also have a HZ wagon, shame you couldn't get that one up and running.

A Cummins K5 would be so nasty. As an American I’ve always wanted a K5 so I’m pumped for this build!
Keep it American. Have a shop print up a new abs dash insert and go with a set of analog EFI Holley gauges to upgrade the dash. Recaro classic LX bucket seats up front and a recover on the rear bench. New vinyl floor mat and some new shift knobs...call her done. If you have to dip into a new motor go Chevy small block in the 450hp range.
Duramax, 4L80E, NP 205/203 Twin stick transfer, built Dana 60 axles rolling on 39s. Beautiful.

It would be a sick beach runner with no canopy chuck a big fridge in the back for tinnies and keep the seats to bring the crew. Keen to see what u guys do to it❤

The 400 is a decent engine but those tires are going to blow up the stock axles pretty quick if you’re going to wheel it hard
I had a 1981 with a 350 and 4 spd manual on 35’s blew up both ends went to a Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear never had a problem after that

Don’t suppose you’d know what a diffs are in a 73 k5 blazer? 350chev auto. Currently building one in NZ atm
DANA 44 and a 12 bolt. And apparently only the mil spec K5s had 60s, so the 74 also had 44 front and 12 bolt rear

I think that you should do a full rebuild, but have it looking original on outside and more new or modern running gear with a Cummings Diesel V8, tidy up inside with digital gauges, so its a combination of both new and old. Then do outside with raptor paint to protect from scratches, upgrade headlights, stereo, similar to a pioneer 12 inch screen.

39's on a 10 bolt lol, you should get a dana 60 front diff, 14 bolt rear and put a 203/205 doubler in it.
get rid of the springs for ones with less arch for lower centre of gravity and so they ride smoother and flex more and cut the guards to fit the tyres.
and if i had it i'd ditch the slushbox for an nv4500 or a tr4050 and add efi.
40's 4 inch suspension lift but with 56 inch leaf springs or a coil conversions, 1 inch body lift, 5/8 inch 14 bolt/Dana 60 axle lift, 203/205 doubler, L8T 6.6L gas V8 crate engine, 6L90 automatic transmission,
I used to drive this same K5 model when I was in college in Baja, Mexico in the late 90’s. Only difference was the color, red and white. Great memories. Looking forward to see the final set up👍🏼

Full ground up resto, keeping it looking original as possible on the outside, but some sneaky under bonnet mods for extra hp👌
I'm not a Chev guy, but its a classic. I would give it a 100% restoration to original, with any mods can be converted back to original easily. & the two tone blue & white looks really good
& keep the bloody chrome!!

I had a 77 GMC JIMMY it had a 10" spring only suspension lift and 40" mud grapplers from NITTO. Someone who owned it prior to me put in a ZZ502 and an ATLASII transfer case with DANA 60'S front and rear with 4.73's that Jimmy was so much fun.

Looks great , if you take the canopy off and do a canvas canopy an idea could be to put some sort of roll cage in it , idea is it can hold the canvas canopy and when the tops removed having a roll cage would keep your passengers safe if shit went south , looking forward to the build up
Forgot to add. Weld angle iron on the underside of both sides of the hood. That will keep your hood from bending and don't forget lube the hinges.
What a beast I rather the chrome rims, I reckon give engine a little tickle for sure can't wait to see the finished product
My first car was an 82 K5 Blazer, I loved that beast!

Had the same year and model with warn lockouts. Put a 350 throttle body engine with serpentine belt. Got a lot better gas mileage and more power. It was a beast with the top off. CHEERS! Love the channel!
Love it, bloody awesome rig, love Burkey is on the job, sorry don't love the modern black rims, needs period correct chrome or silver wheels, not ROHs, its a square peg in a round hole, but the truck is sic, I do love the idea of a canvas rear and zip off sides, rip the carpet out treat, no carpet so it can be washed out, Love the color & pentina, def needs some suspension work, some engine mods maybe a super charger if the engine is healthy enough, but it sounds like the transfer and gearbox might need some work also, not sure about chrome delete, I'm all about period correct with older cars, not trying to make them modern, except seats some interior, but no digital shit, you can restore modern while keeping it period. Excited to see what Burke does with it🤘

Spray some clear coat over the patina. It will preserve it and it will stay shiny.
For suspension, do the rear up front swap and put some 59s from a suburban in the back. IF you can find those springs. It was a popular mod in the states for a while
If offered shipping to the US, I'd 100% support this build. Powder coat the daily wheels, make it a flex monster and resto-mod this beaut. I'm currently looking for this exact body style in the US can't find them anywhere that isn't rusted out or fully restored for 40k 🙃

Ground up resto with coilovers and put in an LSA Motor, keeps it chevy but gives it some life and fun. You've got your deisel tourer, a supercharged petty build would give ya some fun.

Keep the chrome front, its classic.
Clean up the entire inside upholstery, carpet etc etc. Ideally ground up (from bare floor).
If it came out with this huge 400 in it, then keep that.
Love the classic blue look, so keep that.
You probably should fully redo the gearbox and sticks, otherwise you'll look a bit silly grinding gears!
If it were me, I'd do a full engine rebuild (plus carby etc etc).
Forget the roofracks business, these were made for internal space, plus you'd need a long ladder!
Then competition it. I already want a ticket.
By the way this competition thingy (which I need more than want, but both) do you get 'locked in' after a month? I'm a bit hesitant on falking out money, I realize that's your income, but its kinda a necessity of mine to have money for food.

A Y62 conversion for sure but id like to see the canopy stay but put it on rams so she goes up at the flick of a button and turns into sleeping area or a shots bar.
Find a Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear set of 40's and you'll be amazed what those little trucks will do
Put a y62 v8 into the big girl and then give it a bit of flex and then fully restore the interior. Make it a weapon for the sand🤙

Full restore, specially on paint and body. Engine overall or upgrade. Suspension upgrade. That would be great.

Looks great resto mod with original paint, change the motor to a new Ls motor and drive it, need to swap to the Roh polished rims

Had several old chevys tears ago...i.plowed snow in nyc.....weak point was axles....thet couldnt take much stress....turbo 350 and 400 trans were great ...but need a cooler...keep them under 200 degees f🤠🤓😎✌

Keep the interior simple but useful. make a little house out of it. You can sleep in, a fridge, stove,ect.. keep the paint but do it right. I would stick with 35" for daily driving , and the 39 for show

LMC truck parts in the U.S. will have any parts you need including full interiors.
Keep the blue and white color scheme, but don’t delete the chrome. Chrome is rare these days especially real chrome, embrace it and it’s retro-ness and nostalgic. Soft canvas sounds great, but the slim line rac over the top of it will kill the vibe of going topless in the rear.
Cool rig do white bits black would suit rims
Tidy the paint put a basic camping setup in the back and run a Cummins because why not 🎉🍻

Those axle won’t stand the 39s in any grippy situation. 35s are the biggest tire I’d put on the factory axles. I’ve had a couple of k trucks and you have to be careful on 35s if you’re doing semi hard stuff.
Put the 8.1l gen 7 big block in it out of the early 2000s silverados and full size SUVs. Never be done in Aus it seems. It has more in common with older v8s but runs more of the LS style computers. There's a logger guy in Canada who has a cammed one with 5.30 diff gears in it. Pulls heaps of wood. 6 tonne or more trailers. Reckons it eats it compared to the 6.6l gas v8s in the current 2500s as he dives his bosses one.
For the record, The K-5 Blazer is a TRUCK. NOT a car. A TRUCK. As for the mods if you put a high performance engine in it you will need to upgrade the axles. The stock axles on the blazers do not do well with big performance engines and oversized tires. Great vid, keep 'em coming.

Lose the canopy, put in roll bars, lose all the shiny crap and go all gun metal grey trim with the blue and white blazer. Take out the back seat and turn it around so the passengers can have an awesome view of where you have been
Sweet mother of Jesus. Please do NOT "chrome delete" this K5. 1977 is 1 year only yellow painted stripe in the side trim. It is SO hard to find. Especially fr the K5.
Also, if you are going to put a canvas top on, use a pickup truck tailgate. That drops a couple 100 pounds of weight. You will need tALL of the tailgate hardware to go with it. It is slick once it is done. Any tailgate, Chev or GMC, 1973 - 1987, will work.
Also, a hint to NOT crinkle your hood, when closing, push it towards windshield, do NOT pull it down, as they tend to fold.
Having owner several of these, I could go on and on, but will limit my unsolicited opinion to these 3 tips.

Just get an LS e-rod crate motor kit with SBC to LS motor mounts and call it a day. Anything else is just a 3 year project that no one cares about (because it's been done 1,000 times)... get it out there on the beach and have some fun!
