    Nice looking book for sure. I'm not that interested in actual historical gaming, but there's a lot of stuff in here I could use for my own setting, which is grounded in world history with a fantasy veneer. And we do have states serving as analogues to Asian lands, so this fits that need.

    I picked up the book, waiting for it to arrive. The design is just so good. For your next setting book, I do have a recommendation for the setting and hopefully I might inspire you. The setting is the 17th century polish commonwealth and the surrounding region. Its a setting that hasn't been done, other than in an untranslated polish ttrpg, and is absolutely full of interesting history(things like the golden liberty, sarmatism, and dozens of wars), politics(multiple countries in the commonwealth, the liberum veto, influence from outside powers, allodially own land not feudal), plenty of enemies and allies(tartars/cossacks, germans, austrians, turks, swedes, russians ect...), and an absolutely beautiful region(the steppe being a standout). A book series I recommend about the time is called The Trilogy by Henry Sienkiewicz which has an english translation.

    I noticed you used real world terms for places and religions this time around, rather than the Unconquered Sun or Crescent Moon of Dark Albion. Was there any reason for that? Not that it makes a difference, of course. I was just curious.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Před 2 lety +10

      It's been a slow and regular evolution. When I started with Dark Albion, I had used alternatives for the major religions because I wasn't sure if some gamers wouldn't disapprove of the use of real religions still in contemporary practice, or just not effectively RP them because of modern ideas/prejudices they have, so I thought it safer to gloss them over very slightly. Lion & Dragon downplays that, though it still sometimes mentions the Unconquered Sun instead of Christianity. When I started writing the RPGPundit Presents books, I knew I wanted to use more material directly related to medieval Christianity and so I decided to shift to just directly using Christianity. And I've done the same here.

    I received my copy maybe two weeks back (at least a few days before the video). I think one thing that could have been explored more was religion. Things were settling down by this time into religious divisions that would be familiar to us today, but there were extinct or extreme minority religions that were much more vital at this time. Manichaeism was still around in the east. Zoroastrianism was still noticable. You had the forerunners of mainstream Judaism today, but there were also still noticable numbers of Karaites and Samaritans in places. Christianity along the Silk Road would largely be Orthodox (a little unfamiliar to most Western readers) but also Church of the East and various Nestorian sects which most people today have never heard of. It would give flavor, but also give the chance for someone to play a more or less extreme version of Saul of Tarsus to go around and convert people he sees as heretics or schismatics to the true version of their faith which I think would open up some interesting role play opportunities.
    Mostly pretty good overall though.

    • @RPGPundit
      @RPGPundit  Před 2 lety +2

      That's a good point. I do mention the Magians (zoroastrians) but they were very close to extinction in the Silk Road by then. And on the Silk Road itself (as opposed to the Levant) most of the Christians were Nestorians. I guess I could make a sourcebook expanding these details...

"Crimes against children" could include a bunch of bandits bullying the kids as part of an encounter, or the actual plot hook being sent out by a drunk uncle on an errand gone off the rails. Child neglect. I don't know whether to reach out and make sure it's cool or to just pull it down. It's modest but it sold well. Wtf.
