      It's not just that. Honestly, acoustic instruments are a different beast. Even with guitars there is a huge difference between an expensive classical guitar and a very expensive classical guitar. With electrics after a certain price point depending on brand(which is usually not particularly high), you don't really get much worth if any.

  • @Voxtender
    @Voxtender Před 6 lety +3

    There is a happy compromise between these two axes. The Gretsch 6128T-1962 Duo Jet with Bigsby Double Cutaway. It is Basically Mal's guitar in it's original form from when he first bought it. He sanded the paint off (originally red) and did the other mods over time. $2,000. Perfect, with no compromises.

  • @toadman506
    @toadman506 Před 3 lety +3

    That guitar took about a decade to go from the stock 63 Double -Jet that Malcom was given, to how it ended up. The Trem was removed so it would stay in tune, he didn't need Trem playing Rythym as for the 2 volume knows ther were originally 3. The silver button on the bottom covered the hole from the Bridge Pickup Volume. The idea was to use the individual pickup volumes and tone to get the sound you wanted, then fine tune with the Master Volume on the Cut. The original, was used by Malcom on I believe EVERY studio album AC/DC recorded, and in every live show, he had an identical 63 set exactly the same as his second (Malcom 's backup, is what his nephew Steve plays now) ONE Guitar, Set up One way, ALWAYS in Tune, and History was made.

    Before the Malcom Young model, Gretch had a Eddie Cochran model that was relic'd and cost about the same. I for one am glad they take the time to recreate this history and the sound of these very special instruments. I personally will not own one, but that is my personal decision. I want to put my own scuffs and dents in my own guitbox. A collector that has deep pockets may lust after it and could afford it with no pain. I say go for it my friend.

  • @g1344304
    @g1344304 Před 6 lety +48

    I love you Rob but I wish someone who appreciated the history behind Malcolm's Grestch did this review, and someone who could dial in a clean Malcolm tone. His main Gretsch is truly one of a kind and heavily modified through the years, Malcolm picked off the original red drum skin colour with a screwdriver, he added the 3rd (middle pickup) before removing both the neck and middle pickups (the removal of their magnetism affects the string vibration and tone), the bridge has been changed positions and type many times among other things. It couldn't just be recreated by building a 'new' guitar. There are only 40 of these guitars being made and they will all sell out and become major collectors pieces. $10k is too much but I understand why Gretsch have priced it that way.

    • @amberwoodstudio
      @amberwoodstudio Před 4 lety

      Mal’s reissue sure has a handle with the drive as compared with the lower priced Gretsch. I’d be tempted to pull the cheaper pickups and install one better pickup on the bridge and the tone differences should disappear.
      I wonder if rolling tone back more would help take some of the shrill off

    Just wanted to let you know that because of you and few other CZcamsrs here that I am picking up my guitar again after 3 years. a little back story I had surgery of both of my feet on November 1st and of 2017 due to complications from diabetes. When I returned home on November 3rd, I found myself depressed and biting at family and friends. When I found out I would not be able to go back to work or be on my feet for a minimum of 2 months my depression worsened. So one weekend I sat and went thru youtube and watched quite a few of your videos and realised that instead of wasting this time feeling sorry for myself I should do something. So with my daughter's help, I dusted off my Squire Bullet tele, reloaded my guitar software (brand omitted) and started relearning exactly how enjoyable and painful playing and strumming was. And my family told me there was actually a smile starting to show on my face again.SO in short I wanted to give my thanks and admiration to you for helping a lost soul find the path again. I know I have a huge task in front of me but if I can play a1/3 as well as you do them I will have accomplished where I have set the bar for me . Again thank you for all you do for us the fans. And to any of you trolls who think this s a pitch to try to get free stuff, you are bigger idiots than I thought. I already have a fund (set up by myself and my wife) to get better gear and things so I am not looking for handouts. This is simply a thank you anda handshake to a great player and human being that gave me some needed inspiration to get off my proverbial ass and get back to work honing my somewhat nonexistent skills

    Must admit I've not read all the posts, but as a guitarist, what I look for is in the feel & detail more than just the 'blond' colour - its a shame that it was not mentioned at all in the vid. the major difference between the cheaper model and the tribute one (and the cheaper MY model - around £2k+) is the whole weight / feel / height of neck where it joins the body and therefore action / overall acoustic nature, of the more costly one - the real difference for the player, is one actually feels like you are playing an original 60's 'jet', whereas the other has the feel of a more modern guitar - very different set ups and consequently very different playing experiences.... I did once own an original 60's 6121, and to me the 'MY' models do have that feel, which the other Gretsch models don't (down to the overall construction - not the missing bits I must add).

    Can't say I'm a fan of the "copy somebody's guitar down to the last ding" thing. I think Malcolm's original guitar is way cool, but an expensive copy of his exact guitar isn't my thing. I'd prefer a new guitar, and put my own dings and scratches on it from using it. That Electromatic looks cool, though (love that natural finish). Give me something like that, with TV Jones pickups and locking tuners.
    For a custom finish, I'd go with transparent blue or lemon.

    I’d do something no one else has done yet. My custom shop build would be: Weathered gray top stain with a bright orange stained back/sides/neck/back of headstock, and white binding around body and neck, white TUSQ nut. Black front of headstock MOP Gretsch logo. Nickel rings (around the pickups), bridge, tuners, etc. Like the absence of the pick guard as well on the natural you have here. I’d drop the pick guard. Gibson did some metal truss rod covers that were engraved that looked pretty sick too (I’d have a 12ax7 tube etched in mine). Fenders new cases that the American strats come in are great. Add $120 to the price and toss in a nice case. Gray with matching orange interior? At $679 with the bigsby or $599 w/o that would be amazing.

    Gretsch CS replica series guitars are not meant to appeal to the masses, which is why they only make small runs. They appeal to a small demographic of players that appreciate these details in an attempt to own a piece of rock n roll history and will spend quite a bit of money to achieve that. They’re not for everyone and Gretsch certainly knows that but they succeeded in making 50 players really happy with this model and set the bar for all of us when it comes to replica guitars so I would say that’s a job well done.

      Actually, you are paying for a guitar which replicates as closely as possible a guitar played for about 40 years, from one of the biggest bands in history of music. That, my friend, is not easy to do. Especially when they try to replicate looks, feel, weight, sound, and even more.

      Never said it is worth it. I would never pay for a guitar like that, since I much rather get a vintage one with that money. I was just explaining what is that you're actually paying for. I appreciate the effor that goes into thesetype of instruments, but just as art, not as something I would buy. Obviously it will never be the original, that is a very stupid thing to say. Nevertheless, I am sure it is a great instrument.

    Here's my suggestion for the flame topped finish, and I of course would appreciate some credit if you decide the idea is as unique and cool as I do (and potential a job just designing guitar finishes). OK, hear me out on this as it might not settle well after first read through. I have never really seen, and I think it would be very interesting, to have a guitar finish that was a transparent, anemic white. If you are familiar with a furniture finish that is referred to as a pickled finish that is often seen on oak, this is what I'm referring to. Oak can have a warm natural finish, so the "pickled white" can look just like a warm translucent white. If the flamed top is maple, maybe just adding one red drop to the pickling finish to warm up the transparency. Anyway, that's my suggestion.

    In terms of the color for a flamed cap Gretch, I'd love to see the traditional Gretch orange and royal blue stain over a flamey cap *drool*

    Brag time...
    Years & years ago (about 1991 I think?) I was living in Balmain. Went to the local one night (just local people...maybe 6 in the whole bar) and mate & I are shooting pool and I'm making my way through a bottle of JD.
    So, these 2 short guys walk in, put 50 cents (that's what a rack cost then...no, not that rack) onto the table, then asked me "hey, you wanna play dubs?" Yep, no wuzzes. I look at the dude who asks about "dubs" and think (it was a bad week...) out aloud "I know you 2 from somewhere..."
    "My name is Malcolm and this is me bruvva Angus. We play in a band you've probably heard about....AC/DC?" They lived in same street my mates mum lived in...a restored mansion once known as Cockroach Mansion...and I got them to accompany me at full flight at 12am "Its a long way to shop, if you wanna sausage roll."

    I like both guitars, I couldn't ever spend 10k on any guitar but some people obviously do buy them and good for them.I wonder if Malcolm would have even spent that much on a guitar, he played this guitar forever even though he could afford anything he wanted. He obviously customized it himself. As for the flame top, I think it needs to be a natural finish flame top.
