Keanu Reeves maybe a huge hit again, but there was a time when his career was less than heavenly. Constantine is one of those devilish low points.
Constantine is a 2005 American occult detective film directed by Francis Lawrence, in his feature length directorial debut, and starring Keanu Reeves as John Constantine. Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Djimon Hounsou co-star. With a screenplay by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello, the film is based on DC Comics' Hellblazer comic book, with plot elements taken from the "Dangerous Habits" story arc (issues #41-46) and the "Original Sins" story arc.

Well its "dark" but not dark enough like how the comics goes most of the time, and not even detailed or darker as how the Bible represents all this demons/gods/angels, it is fun but if you want a more realistic depiction of the bible demons and angels you arent going to find it in there, neither a faithful representation of the comic is based on, but if you just want an action movie like Blade but with demons and angels instead of vampires its good enough.
Also i think the critic was saying that how he can get away with a self-sacrifice act to "enter heaven" so he can escape the clutches of Lucifer while abusing the hell out of a righteous act right in front of God without being punished? because it looks cool but it does gives away that you arent doing that for a self-sacrifice notion but more like abusing that "rule" so you can escape from ultimate evil cheating your way throught, if it were more accurate he could had been going straight to hell because of that, but then again i get it because its a comic based movie and you are supposed to just turn your brain off and look at the action so i always give it a pass.

Don't believe me go back and rewatch those films u will realize he says nothing that's interesting and his facial expressions literally summarize how dull he was.... anyway...how is it he started off dull then he wasn't popular for years but then in 2014 his publicity raised through the roof...... better question is how did he become better at acting...he felt dull in the matrix Movies but in the John wick films he seems to have more personality to him and we'll more enthusiasm....to me in the matrix it looked like he was phoning in his performance......then in 2019 he became way more popular think of it he had another John wick film and fortnite collaborated with him to add him in there game and he is going to be in a video game next year and Pixar got him to voice a character in toy story 4 and he had a Cameo in a Netflix movie called always be my maybe...so my question is how did he start off as bland and dull but got way better....also in my opinion he is one of the many dude that can totally pull off a mustache and beard and long hair look....to summarize this up... how did he start off bland but then years later without being in tons of movies...got way better and Became a famous movie star that no one can stop talking about him anymore?

@The One Who Laughs Well, Revelation 12 has the Devil represented by a dragon. It is a very metaphorical story of Satan's failed attempt to stop the purpose of the Messiah, and to destroy Israel. The third of the stars he swept from heaven were angels who sided with him; as Satan is actually a rebellious angel himself.
Technically, there are no "actual" dragons in the Bible (unless you count the great beasts Behemoth and Leviathan, whose descriptions interestingly resemble dinosaurs), but dragon metaphors are scattered about.
With the liberties this movie takes (Gabriel is a MALE! Seriously! Call her Gabrielle if you want!), it's not a big deal for dragons to exist.

You get back in your car and lock the doors. You heart is beating a little faster and you have goosebumps "Seven." You can't tell where it's coming from, why is it counting? "Six." You can see it... there is a figure in front of you moving through the shadows. Slowly, almost fearfully you reach to turn your headlights on. The dark road is illuminated and... nothing... "FIVE!" It's in the back seat!!! You shove open your car door and run into the night! "FOUR!" the crickets are deafening now. Your heart is pounding in your chest and you can hear it behind you. "THREE!" The crickets are screaming now. The whole forest is screaming and you have to get away! "TWO!!!" You trip and sprain your ankle, tumbling down a hill. But when you reach the bottom all the noise is gone, the forest is absolutely silent... You turn back to look for your pursuer. Pulling out your phone and turning on the flashlight... the forest is quiet... "One." It's right behind you. Every instinct tells you not to turn around... but you must... you must look at it... I LOVED Peter Stormare's Devil in this movie. He was a total evil blood-dripping movie monster. But he was in a suit. And funny. And basically, what Ultimate Evil should be. My favorite Evil moment is a little one. Constantine has slit his wrists to die. He tries to light a last cigarette, but he cut the tendons in his wrists so his hands don't work. Satan lights his cigarette, but right before he does, as Constantine is leaning forward weakly to light it, Satan pulls the lighter away. Just for a second. It was such a perfect moment of The Devil being a total dick. Like, even there, he can't pass up an opportunity to be evil. Loved it.

I remember back in 2005 a friend of mine and i talked a Lot about the (back then) new trend of making comic movies, back then EVERYBODY was trying to figure out how should be done, You know, that first spiderman trilogy, Hellboy, Daredevil, Blade, You name it. For sure a lot of those were trying to capitalize in the shoes of X Men and Batman Begins, but nobody was sure of to hit the nail on it.
Now, for a bit of context, my friend was more sided with mainstream popular comics, he liked Spiderman, Iron Man, Batman. That stuff. I was more on the author comics, i love Hellboy, the Alan Moore work, the metabarons, Sandman, transmetropolitan. More experimental things. So back then there was The Punisher movie. I knew it was bland and not very in line with the source material but i did enjoy it, but my lad HATE IT. He said stuff like "that is not Punisher" and the producers ruined it by trying to make Frank a nice guy. And i was like "Dude, chill. Hollywood works like that. They will never make a 100% true adaptation if that means no money for them. Sometimes you got to accept what you get". Later we both watched Constantine (that of course being me a Moore fan i was especting) and... I finally understand him. One thing is doing a more open movie for the public and another is to take a household name for a few cheap bucks.
The Hellblazer comics are NOTHING like the movie and in some cases i get that the movie can be made just with solid elements of the comic and not taking a direct story line (like Hellboy, that mixes different small plots of the comic with a few new characters to do his own take but respecting what the comic is about) and the sad thing is that i get that there's some works that are not suitable for a Big ass movie so you kinda have to rework certain aspects in order to make a more entertaiment film... But why change Constantine that Much? Didn't the comic have enough good elements to work with and do a pleasant film for fans and new viewers? Why Chas is John's apprentice? Chas is a friend of John and his driver, he was never his pupil (not Even the fucking name is correct) why didn't make the plot about the demons fighting for John's soul? Why Papa Midnite is so weak? The guy is practically inmortal and excuse me who the fuck are those other characters? Far as i remember just John, Gabriel, Chas, Papa Midnite and Lucifer (that vague devil at the end) are in the comics, Where's Nergal, Epiphany, Gemma, Angie, Astra? Seriously, this movie could set a precedent on how to do a mature complex comic into a movie and what we got is just a watered down version of a great comic.

When the movie came out I was unaware that it was based off of a comic book character. Then, when I found out it was, I noticed immediately that they messed up the story so bad. Constantine is British person and lives in the UK. By making him an American living in LA, they seriously messed up the character. They didn't even show him using magic and had him using only devices and partaking in primarily Christian related characters. The real Constantine, though a collector of magic artifacts, used magic a lot being a sorcerer. And he fought other sorcerers, magic users, and paranormal magic characters in addition to demons.

This movie has a couple jokes sprinkled in between scene and most depend on your religious point of view to like them or to even understand them. Neither Shia or Keannu were at their best on this one and some of the characters follow a formula that has been beaten to death but Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Djimon Hounsoua and Peter Stormare are great in their roles and i feel the "dullness" of the main character and sidekick is a little intended in order to make room for the rest of the characters and to display a more interesting world that I think is the highlight of the film. Worth a watch at least.

"Nothing like quenching that inner pits of damnation journey with pancakes. Seriously, what'd you think IHOP stood for?"
    Me:
    "Helltaker reference much?"
