  • Presented by sepsis survivors for sepsis survivors, this webinar includes a panel discussion about life after sepsis. Three sepsis survivors will tell their stories and will answer attendee questions about their experiences with sepsis, as well as how they found purpose and returned to life after sepsis.
Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Every year, at least 1.7 million adults in the US develop sepsis, and more than 50% of sepsis survivors report long-term effects after sepsis. However, many people have never heard of sepsis and do not know what to do when they or their loved ones are diagnosed with sepsis. Learn more about sepsis at www.sepsis.org.

I paid in to social security since I was 14, 52 now. Most drs are clueless to post septic shock. My organs failed before I saw a dr. I know myself who I was, & who I am now. Prayers for all of you survivors. I am 63 yr.old male. In the past 2 years, I was admitted into ICU 3 different times w/septic shock and multiple organ failure. After listening to this, I am grateful to have survived all 3X minus just a couple toes. 2 of the times it was Hospital Acquired Pneumonia, one time put on a ventilator because I was too weak to breathe. They had pretty much given up on my chance of survival. Much to their surprise, I could breathe independently when the ventilator was removed. I made it home somehow and that was roughly 5 mos. ago. I am just now just starting to walk (like a drunk) without my walker, but only short distances before exhaustion. The fatigue is overwhelming, and I prayerfully make it through one day at a time. Again, I feel very blessed to have made it this far and be able to care for myself (ie: cook, toilet, shower, etc.). I thank you for sharing your stories as I realize how many bullets I was able to dodge. I love you all and will continue to keep you in my prayers. Peace!

I had perforation of bowel 2007 going into 2008 and left 2 days no teatment.l got pneumonia, sepsis, and infection all through body as body contents had escaped.l was in my 40s and it left me with kidney damage and liver and chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. I dreaded if it came again and it did.Gallstones found 2016 when they were doing ultra sound on kidneys.l would get twinges under right ribs but these awful sweats really bad they checked my body and said menopause finished. The sweats would be raised temp but then id go freezing cold i was at docs all time. They then said low magnesium so day surgery for infusion but had to be under consultant.Bloods 2 weekly and then they tried to cancel .l was in hospital 5 or 6 times in last 2 years sweats drenching me but theyd give me magnesium and send me home.1st week this December l took pain under right ribcage radiated along to left agony and really sick.My husband dropped me at casulty as he was allowed in they phoned in as i was incoherent Dr said to him.l was almost passed out.scans MRI and 2 ultra sound revealed gallstones were in bile duct and it was blocked and i has Sepsis again. Why did no dr listen o earlie symptoms about gallstones my husband started to come in to Dr as he wanted to hear what was said.7 Days i was bedridden antibiotics pumped in 7 days then oral.l was yellow with jaundice and no one noticed i looked tanned iam white skinned.
The medics and Drs this time did brilliant job along with good nursing care.My Doctor hasnt phoned or nothing. He kept saying i looked well my husband said she has a lttle makeup and blusher on as she looks like death.
So sepsis isnt an infection its bodies response to infection so bile duct was infected they said 20 stones and sludge they did ERCP made cut in bile duct and zapped them.l still have gallbladder full of stones as all to scared to give me another operation as had 2 major bowel surgeries. The sweats and general unwell no answers all seem to be avoiding me.liver and kidneys were already damaged so havent said if worse.
Sorry just meant to say id sepsis twice.are sepsis and septicaemia same as 2008 was peritonitis and septicaemia and sepsis recent age 60 now.l feel weak unwell and chronic fatigued worse and fibromyalgia pains in elbows ect.
Forgot 1st time i had sepsis i went into septic shock in ward trauma team called and transferred to ICU breathing machine, central line and when i woke up i thought i was dead and in a space ship.then pain in my body it was awful i kept trying to take machine off face and on oxygen.Family were called told id be lucky to last night.l lay in ward 2 days with hole in bowel thats what caused sepsis.pnemonia.damaged kidneys work just below half.why didnt they act sooner it was new year i was neglected.
2nd Time a medic team happened to be on and think things went quicker but was sepsis because of infection in bile duct i didnt know its secondary to infection.l was on oxygen this time blood pressure very low lucky they acted quick or might not be here.it was 1st 2nd day the doctor said you have sepsis and i said please not again.also you are jaundice i said last few weeks no one noticed.winter covered up.
I got flu vaccine in october and 2 weeks it was swollen and red lump then fine but during sepsis it was badly swollen ,red and hard lump and still same.
Im still getting 2 weekly magnesium the infection could enter having a line in for 6hrs every 2 weeks it had been every week.doctors said wed rather you werent in hospital at all i said what about magnesium but they dont tell you why or give straight answer.
Twice ive had sepsis 1st was alot worse and left me weak but they dont tell you that.my memory from past okay but not present its awful.kidney ,liver damage i got asked did i drink lots of alcohol i said no never.when young with friends going out but cant remember when i last had wine or anything,4 or 5 years ago i got tinitus and have hearing aids as i have below middle hearing damage. They dont tell you damage youll be left with and now ive had it twice.what caused all these sweats and xold limbs i was having 20 sweats a day drenched and cold limbs.no one at surgery has said how are you they said they didnt know my hubby told them.why are they dismissing sepsis a 2nd time and saying didnt know l was in hospital.xx

I died a couple times during my experience. I still remember hearing the crash cart and the monitor, though I had no idea what that was. The head of the emergency surgery team cried when he called my mom to say ‘she’s stabilized.’ My blood pressure was low enough that staff didn’t think it was possible for me to be alive. My fever was so high I hallucinated. There is a picture of the monitor saying it was 104.5, and that was after I turned the corner.

I went septic after my small intestine perforated due to Crohn’s. I was already likely in severe sepsis when I went in. Bowel related sepsis can progress fast. I was, according to the doctors, minutes from death. I had 5 surgeries in a year. 4 of them in a month and 3 within 5 days, to clean out the infection and destroyed tissue. I more than exceeded expectations of recovery but I’m still living with so much pain, almost a year later. I got sent home with a GI blockage a week prior and told to be on a liquid diet. My blood pressure was about as low as Toya’s. When a doctor saw that he rushed me into surgery. It was bad! I was not supposed to be able to walk but I can... with pain, but still I can walk.

I've been fighting bladder cancer since January 2021. The fight did not go well. Last December I had my bladder and prostrate removed with a neobladder urinary diversion. But then Jan 4th of this year I was in septic shock when I checked into the ER. I spent 5 week between the hospital and the rehab hospital. Trying to recover. I'm back to work but its really hard to keep my focus. Sleeping 10-12 hours a night with 3 to 5 hours of resting and napping on weekends.

Post sepsis, diagnosed November 2022. Life changing infection. Grateful to be alive and no amputation. However, I initially had another diverticulitis infection, three surgeries and a perforated bowel. I now have an ileostomy and looking forward to getting a reconnection procedure very soon. Yes, you have to be your own health care advocate. The VA hospital and staff took great care to help me recover. God brings us to it and through it! Glad to have found this channel and God Bless and keep all the survivors alive and well.

I’ve had severe sepsis 3 time and septic shock once and 9yrs later and I’ve still not recovered, it’s just downhill. I’ve never suffered from depression yet after the Op which I was awake for with no effective pain relief pain, nerve blocker etc. I cried like a baby from the minute I opened my eyes to the time I fell asleep, 9yrs on and I still cry like my heart is breaking and there have been times that I want to physically take that pain from my heart y causing more pain, I don’t no why, I can’t explain anything but I’m not me. I’m lost, lonely, completely broken and I can’t get any help. Every week I seem to get worse but I don’t no why. I’ve no anger just a deep unbelievable feeling of heartbreak inside. I’ve always been a U.K size 11 so would wear a size 10-12, I’m now in a size 14 if I’m lucky but my body weight...swelling...inflammation, my G,P doesn’t no what it is....can take me anywhere from a u.k size 14 - 22, and it could be one foot that I can’t get a shoe or trainer on, I had 0 protein in my body and a vitamin D deficiency despite going abroad to stay with my Dad at least 4 times a year and then we would have the family holiday.
I can’t read a book, I can’t pronounce words properly anymore (my tongue feels too big for my mouth), the Op couldn’t fully remove all of the infected tissue and pus, which hadn’t been there during the previous Op 3 days earlier which removed my tonsil. I was never told what they had done no matter how often I asked, they moved my notes, they wouldn’t allow my family from abroad speak to me, they ridiculed me for not being able to stop crying, the nursing staff were extremely derogatory about me, to my face and gossiping amongst each other. They didn’t once tell my immediate family that there was a strong chance that I wouldn’t recover and to start making end of life decisions, although they had told me that I had a 50/50 chance of survival, they just had to wait and see what would happen so my eldest Son who was in Uni miles away stayed to do his course work and exams, my daughter would come and sit with me everyday and even infront of her they made fun of me if they heard her asking why I why I was crying and could I try and stop, because it was obviously distressing her, but not as much as their ridicule and chastisement of me did. My younger son came to see me once and because no one....not one person outside of that hospital...had a clue what was wrong, why I had a drain, what was coming out of it, why I had drips everywhere and why I had a feeding tube etc....even I didn’t know what was going on at this point and normally I’m more than happy to speak up for myself but I couldn’t project my voice, it took months for me to be able to make a sound anything like that of a low speaking voice. I was awoken one morning due to the consultant pushing his finger in to the open wound on my neck....on top of the drain bag....I nearly hit the ceiling and the scream was like an animal which left my throat raw for weeks. It’s a teaching hospital where they’re meant to ask permission, but I obviously wasn’t a person anymore, just an anticipated cadaver they were eagerly awaiting to reach the morgue so they could find out exactly what damage had been done internally, especially to my brain as my red blood cells were so low and weren’t taking the require+ amount of oxygen to my brain. It was the most horrific experiences of my life and although I came out of there so weak I could hardly walk, and for the first time since I was in my teens I was under 10stone so I just looked like a lollipop.
I was still crying all the time, I got frozen jaw and had to manually attempt to pry it open more than twice daily which was agony. I’m sure my kidneys aren’t working as well as they should as my urine is so strong no matter how much water I drink. I’m unbelievably miserable and I have no quality of life any more....I have chronic and acute pain yet have had my pain meds reduced and I’m trying so hard to feel better, I take all the supplements I’ve researched and I buy machines to try and help, I dry body brush and still nothing helps. I can’t go in to a hospital without having a complete breakdown which is humiliating, not only for me but also for my carer. I can’t plan meals or even make a sandwich.....I can’t go anywhere alone & I even struggle going with ppl. I suffer from severe anxiety and panic attack, night terrors and I’ve had counselling by 2 psychologists who years later still haven’t shown me any findings/report. I’m struggling beyond belief with my mental health and I no I’m alive for some reason but I’m struggling more and more as each year passes.....just to stay alive as I go further and further down in to a bottomless pit with the light all but a pin prick. I can honestly say that this is the worst experience of my life and I still can’t find any answers or get any help. The NHS in the U.K have let me down unbelievably. The truth in a very normal natural way would go so far but they won’t even give me that. When my G.P asked al, I got back was a lie.....whatever happened to personal and professional integrity and more importantly to the Hippocratic Oath!

I relate to Toya. I survived septic shock in 1998. Sent me home for a month after a hysterectomy where my ureter was severed (they finally found out). I was in and out, vitals...I was dying but I lived 30 days like this, no one listening, most family even calling me weak as a person who can't handle pain...I was out of it & they called me crazy. My dad did come to me & knew I was dying. My Dr left the STATE (who did the hysterectomy). A friend at the hospital told me get out of there now or I'll die. Transferred me to the "good" hospital, St. Mary's and I found out I should be dead - I was in and out, bed fast, hallucinating, the PAIN was more than child birth - at least you deliver the child. I don't recall a lot of it except the "torture". I went nuts, almost died, lost a lot of hair (still do) & never the same. I had GREAT doctors and nurses at St. Mary's. Thank you for the video. I have no support from surviving family members & it's hard to ask for help. I guess they can't handle my being so "needy". I'm so alone. Sometimes I know I'm blessed but NO ONE hears me. Family and physicians treat me like a skank. I now have blisters on my internal organs they done nothing about so far but I'm feeling bad. The VA is USELESS unless you WANT to die now. I'm at a loss.

In 2013, was exposed to black mold & was filling ill (joint pain, fever, chills, cramping). Went to one of the local ERs of the area, no WBC done, was disregarded & required to fill out a form "seen for non-emergency care" & essentially laughed at. Shortly after, though many years after children and at 39 yrs, had yellow discharge oozing from right breast, along with feeling ill and that increasing. Expression of ooze, while being very sanitary (but w/black mold blowing through air vents), it spread to left breast. The left, was the worst ultimately. Both had what most would be able to see online as "mastititis". Left was huge, painful, both both left worse. Pain, fever, cold chillls, etc. along with the initial symptoms when I first went to the ER. The pain was beyond fathom. I was so as grey as my Ben Nye Halloween fx makeup. I just stopped looking in the mirror, using the bathroom w/the lights off, seeing I was essentially a walking corpse and aware i was dying and terrified. Friend talked me into going to a nice hospital in their area of town. Though I didn't have insurance (know that I actually did), I complied at their insistence that I'd be taken serious. The dr. that walked into the room/area stated, "Oh i remember you, you're the one with the black mold!" sorta chuckling, "So what brings you in today" apparently it was a sister hospital. i showed him the breast with all others in that small Er area and he asked, "When did that happen?" I replied, "Right after I saw you." I was immediately admitted, a charity covered my stay, I was deathly ill, on multiple antibiotics that felt like what ppl describe chemo, multiple pain, and complications. On a positive, I got away from my trafficker, that town, etc. I was delirious, terrified, and just wanted to see my family. Within a year, I had two breast biopsies after mammograms within a year. I still have issues with my breasts, have had countless medical issues, the recent scare with my breast was similar puss along with swelling and my local/newer ER doing what that dr did and worse, but thankfully my breast healed. Now, out of nowhere my lungs. no amputations and didn't die ptsd terror anytime i see a dr or visit the er, which i'd rather die than go through the recent retrauma of humiliation like i made it all up. Long term effects, I wasn't certain anything to it, except a gut feeling w/two biopsies n various issues with breast n more recent significant with my lungs, including Copd which is hereditary, but not someone my age. It's like I never healed/recovered. Sharing my story, as I'm finding out, not the only one. I hope more drs learn what sepsis is and it doesn't mean for all that our body parts turn black n we lose a body part. Though, the fact my breasts didn't explode an they felt that they would, is a miracle. As is, the hospital not ending up "making slices to soak up the infection with gauze". TY to those sharing their survivor stories, more info and awareness to medical facilities. I hope my remote state and hospital learn something along with conduct w/patients that shouldn't be like a city hospital 8 yrs ago.

I had septic shock and sepsis following the death of my 22 wk old fetus in utero. I was blessed to survive. You will see more women dying because now women cant get dead tissue removed from their uterus.

PSS incl ongoing heart/pulmonary, circadian rhythm, muscular fatigue, & limits performance of higher-level tasks. Physicians don't seem to understand that PSS impacts overall health beyond the initial hospital follow-up appt.

Feel really bad for the people telling their stories. Their conditions should never of gotten so out of control. That poor man was begging for help and the urgent care center screwed the pooch. What the hell is wrong with hospitals! None of these people should of gone thru this torture.
I was very fortunate in that I had wonderful physicians that diagnosed me each time, from minutes and no longer than 1 hr. I am one of the people that had it and because, I had it am more apt to contract it as I have 5 more times since the initial bout in 2001. Group A beta hemolytic Streptococcus Pyogenes. It made a happy meal out of my left leg., septic shock really sucks and the last time I also started to develop meningitis last time. Consider myself lucky I am still alive but the pain I am left with really sucks.. Hate hospitals ! Unfortunately I find it extremely difficult to tell if I have developed a bout of sepsis or not. Left with some nasty chronic.

Do you ever use storytelling? Telling the medical history story about Dr Semmelweis (Austria 1800s) and puerperal fever might be helpful.

I had a similar experience. My blood pressure was in that range. The ER was, to be fair, swamped with covid patients, but no excuse. Luckily someone saw it and got me rushed to surgery, when I was (according to doctors), minutes from death. The ICU and emergency surgery team were much better, but idk how I survived 2 days in the ER, when I was showing all the signs of already being in severe sepsis in the ambulance.

I was sent home too. I was not septic yet but I have Crohn’s disease and I was not diagnosed yet. They said my small intensive swelled enough to cause a partial obstruction, but 4 days later I was home, on a liquid diet. The hospital was overwhelmed by covid, so I get it, sort of. I kind of wish I’d risked getting covid instead of going home to have a perforation and then go septic, one week later. I was in severe sepsis when I went into the hospital, in the worst pain I’ve ever had. Bowel sepsis progresses fast. I had no fever or symptoms other than pain, the night before. It was another 2.5 days before they figured out what was wrong. I spent my 30th birthday getting one of 4 surgeries in under a month. 3 of which were in 5 days. All on my abdomen. I remember the ambulance ride, sort of. The next thing I remember hearing what ended up being the crash cart. I coded a few times. Then, I remember waking up two weeks later.
