This week’s An Album A Day theme is, “Covers! Covers! Covers!” That is, albums that feature unique arrangements or interpretations of recognize able songs. And what better way to kick off the new week than with an album that is comprised entirely of covers! Sadly I don’t know too much about this album, but it was released in 1971 by BCG Records (as far as I know they don’t have any other releases). According to the liner notes it was recorded at KINTEL Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The “band” was pretty minimal, with Betsy performing acoustic guitar and singing alongside Pam Rose (lead guitar), and Laymon Jackson (bass). The songs were written by Tim Hardin, Bob Dylan (two songs), Leonard Cohen (two songs), John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins and Ian Tyson.
Although plenty of pictures of the album cover exist online, not much in the way of biographical information is available on Betsy. It’s a shame this Betsy Legg isn’t the recording artist or I might be more inclined to ask about that album she recorded back in the early 70s. Then again, when was the last time I posted a private-press LP and had a plethora of information about the artist? It doesn’t happen all that often. Usually I put out the call for someone else to contact me if they know more, and maybe 70% of the time someone comes through. Other than that, it’s kind of up in the air when it comes to learning about who Betsy is (was?) and what became of her.
As for the songs? They’re pretty good! It’s hard to get an idea of her talent when she’s playing other people’s songs, but she’s an adequate guitarist with a decent voice. It’d be interesting to learn if Betsy ever wrote her own songs. And why didn’t she use the correct song title for “Famous Blue Raincoat” if she was going to give Cohen credit for writing that tune? I mean, that’s probably the least important question I’d ever ask Betsy, but I think it’s funny the song bears a different title…~

Sometimes, for whatever reason, the YT algorithm will hand you a gem.
You're absolutely right Mary, how are you doing?
She has one of those voices that grabs your attention and begs you to stop and enjoy for a little while
What a crystal clear beautiful voice.
Agreed.
No masculine harmonics. V6x kills these voices. 🤣
Wow. This version of this song is likely the best that I've ever heard. Her voice is amazing.
73 yrs. old ! Never heard of her. Just goes to show.
I’m 68, same here. The album cover brings me back to my teen years, though.
Her singing makes me feel like I'm walking barefoot with sunshine all around me.
Ah, the ‘70’s. How I miss them.
@@virginiaviola5097 BOTH OF YOU SHOULD LAY OFF THE DRUGS!
Spoken like someone who lives where fire ants have not invaded...
@@seanseoltoir 😂 Very true!
Her voice reminds me of Joan Baez.
Just love these dreamy imaginary simple folksy tunes of the late 60s/early 70s......
CZcams, bring you the music you love but never new existed.
Knew
I really miss the 70's life as a teenager back then was so much simpler than now, there seemed to be more to look forward to back then
I'd hate to be a teenager in 2023, there seems to be nothing for them now
I absolutely agree with you,our generation was very lucky enjoying true beauty, love and peaceful times ( at least in the west) with a dream soundtrack, not to mention gastronomy and good health...I wish you the best, brother
Perfectly balanced between Joni Michell and Joan Baez, her voice is as as clear as the summer sky.
I agree….so clear and beautiful.
And, if you haven’t heard a a young artist in England named Lucy Thomas, she has a similar clear singing voice. She is a rising young star. She has many videos here on YT. I think my favorite is Desperado.
softer than Baez, and stronger than Joni Mitchell. Perfect. Just perfect.
Beautiful song, just Love the female folk artists of that era.
Joni Mitchell…Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Mimi Farina, Ian and Sylvia, Buffy St Marie…..Hedge and Donna…..
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 My fave of your list: Ian & Sylvia. I was fortunate to meet Sylvia a couple of times when she was touring with Cindy Church and the late Rankin sister who sang so beautifully way up high. Their blend and vibe was perfect art-if there is such a thing. I wonder if Sylvia is still singing. If so, I must look to see where she is playing these days.

Gordon Lightfoot was such a great songwriter. We won't see another like him again. We are just fortunate to have shared the Earth with him for a time.
Man, that takes me back to the good days of music.😢
Man, that takes me back to the good old days of "real" music.
I love this song and I don’t believe I have ever heard of this artist. Boy it puts me back to a certain time and space. ❤
Me too.
Oh yes! Friends faces all rush back, long ago, and far away. I wish them all well, wherever they are. We had the best of times.
Yes it is. The world seemed vage but quiiet, bautiful and real.
Written by the great Gordon Lightfoot
@@stevebengel1346 indeed.
Wow. She should have been famous. The song creates the true emotions of such experiences.

Written by Gordon Lightfoot and on his first album in 1966. Wonderful song.

Wow. What a beautiful voice
Another classic
Thank you
Such a pure voice. It just carries the song along like water in a brook.
RIP GORDON LIGHTFOOT and thank you for all your beautiful music :)))
If this doesn't take you back to the 60's, nothing will. Beautiful!
Sweet and delightful.
I forgot her. Been a while. Hearing the Melody brought back summer memories. Yes..a liitle of Joan...
Perfect voice of a virtuoso. Best ever performance of this song or any folk song. Wow! A real treat. Eternal fame for Gordon Lightfoot too.
Powerful lyrics no matter what kind of music you prefer to listen too.
There are many songs that could easily cross over the line, could by play on any station.
She is amazing. She does the song justice.
Any fans of Judee Sill here? Another unique artist of similar vintage. But Betsy, this is my first time hearing her. Very sweet and authentic. TY for sharing.
This is a Gordon Lightfoot classic. Gordon wrote many great songs, some of them also played by different artists, such as Elvis. Gordon was born in 1938 In Orillia Ontario and still tours and performs as of this date. Update: Gordon died May 1 2023 in Sunny Brook Hospital in Toronto.
I saw him in his prime 74 or 75 at the Opry House in Nashville.
Great artist.
The Edmund Fitzgerald. Can't get any better listening to Gordon and that song.
One of the all time greatest singer/songwriter/performers

Beautifull warm lovely voice had forgotten about her😊
Her vibrato reminds me of Joan Baez. What a lovely, unique voice ❤
Yesss, she and Joan ,voices unforgetables
Kind of a cross between Joan and Anne Murray.
Yes yes yes ... :))) I am mad after Joan Baez
@@bellgab not related to this comment, but do you also like Judy Collins? I like her!
She looks like her!!
it takes so much work to achieve artistry so it's good to preserve whatever of it that we can.
FANTASTISCH ❤
Loved this song for years, never heard this haunting version coming out of the past.
I used to play in the same club, in Atlanta, that Betsy played in. I always loved her voice and style. She is one of a kind.
There’s zero info about her on the Internet. Could you share any?
He wouldn’t have anything that any liar couldnt make up on the spot…
“Played the same club “Im calling some minor BS …🫡
@@Skylarking00 most useful info you'll get by following the posters' link in the description. Recorded in Georgia (even if this non-American don't hear any southern accent) plus some session players. Bit of websearch found a 73 year old Betsy Legg (b 1950) up in Ashtabula, Lake Erie, not quite next door to Atlanta.
There isn't much information about her. What was the name of the club in Atlanta?
I remember seeing her at Dante's Down the Hatch in Underground Atlanta around 1976.
60's, 70's the golden age of music and songwriters.
This brings back times of good memories with my guitar in high school!
It's called melody folks and is one of the foundations of music that stands the test of time - RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
I heard her play and sing one night in some small joint in Underground Atlanta in the spring of 1977 or 1978. I was 1000 miles from home in Atlanta for some fool professional convention or another, and I never rencountered her again. Besides being talented, she was cordial, stopping at my table for a few minutes of chit chat. In those days, there was plenty of good local talent around the country that would not tour much. But it is surprising that there are 692 comments here with such a scarcity of info turning up.
She is simply breath taking. My Hammock under a Southern oak music.
Beautiful!
What a beautiful voice❤
Smiles, how are you doing Linda?
Beautiful, pure voice.
💕 I Iove the finger picking too .. ah the memories ..

Hard to believe that so many have never heard of this lady!
This is heartbreakingly beautiful
GRH Gordon Lightfoot 😢 Miss Betsy Legg Beautifully Compliments Your Song 🎶🎶🎶🙏
Wow! Wow! Wow!
Beautiful woman, very beautiful voice! It's a pity she didn't have a more noteworthy career.
Beautiful version.
Excellent...
Beautiful song, beautifully sung.
Lovely. Wish I had heard of her years ago.
Hello from Sweden 🇸🇪 peace 🕊
Wow! Such a clear voice. Like a violin. Reminds me of Judy Collins.
Perfect. Without autotune. Those were artists.
Sometimes I have to wonder if Swifties know about autotune. Even that young lady's publicist once admitted on the record that she's "not a technical singer". Meaning she can't carry a tune in a bucket. I'm sure she's a good enough performer and quite attractive ... but a real singer? Gimme a break!
@@frostyfrances4700 what does "technical singer" mean?
What I meant is that f*ing autotune is not necessary and that "perfection" is the myth of the morons.
Besides Betsy Sings in tune and that's it, period.
Not everything is autotune. Far from it.
@@rcpmac nowadays I'd say that almost everything is with autotune.
She has such a beautiful voice. That's such a wonderful song.
I absolutely love this! Betsy's voice is like angels singing. That is a long forgotten style that I attempt to keep alive every time I perform.Thank You Betsy for your inspiration and vision!
Lovely, dont know why I havent heard of her before now.

My dad played this song when I was a young child. I didn't know any better and thought he wrote the song. Not that he said he wrote it, but childhood assumptions. Gorgeous piece of music. Hadn't heard of Betsy before this video, but she sounds great.
a perfect song and a perfect voice to sooth my weary soul...my son has been locked up in a psych ward again "with an ache in my heart.... a long way from home, I miss him so.!!!""
Thanks
This is my first introduction to this heartfelt soul. I walk away better for it. Thanks Betsy.
Never heard of her! Wow. She's great.
"A decent voice" ❓❓❓
It's absolutely stunning ... 💟
Very nicely done. I’ve never heard of her but she definitely has a beautiful voice. Great song from a fantastic Canadian musical icon.👍👍
I love this song and saw her preform it with my first true love, those truly were the good old days.
The artist and arrangement are things of ethereal beauty. Not much of that afoot in 2023!May God help us all in this Fourth Turning !
A lovely song and great lyrics and a voice like velvet
She's a treasure. She's not on Spotify . . . yet.
Was just going to check!
I remember this with great fondness. I had never seen a picture of her before and now that I do I am struck by how much she looks like my oldest sister. ♥
A popular look for a reason. Natural and beautiful. This artist did covers so you may be remembering the song with the original artist? She would have made a bigger name for herself if she'd written more of her own material.
I grew up in Detroit. Gordon had an affinity with the city and often performed there. He also used to sing at the University of Windsor and we would go see him there. Sometimes, when I was in college, we would drive to Toronto to see him.
Beautiful song - voice - phrasing and a beautiful girl.
I heard it the day it came out on the radio! Sweet!
Man, I had forgotten this wonderful old song. Thanks for reminding me. This lady can sing.

Payola 😮
Because she is just singing the songs that hundreds of others were performing that time.
because the "music industry" is a fixed game. Everything is fixed and YOU can't change it. Sit there and suck it up.
She sounds a whole lot like Joni Mitchell, don't you think? It's hilarious, seeing everybody in the comments skirting the issue.
@@Da_Publick She don't sound a bit like Joni. When ever i hear Joni Mitchell i projectile vomit. I don't do that with this singer.
