I understand your reaction, in that there are cases in which an artist or musician dies young, or tragically (or both!), and in so doing, seemingly becomes famous. In my own case, I adored Eva Cassidy's voice when I first heard it, and it was over a few years later that she died, at only age thirty-three. And when she died, it was during an autumn in which I was age thirty-eight and in the midst of dealing with the end of a long-distance, whirlwind of a relationship, amidst my own health problems that have existed since I was a teenager, and continue to this day such that, as I look back now at age sixty-three, I think I knew even at the time it would (probably) be my last relationship. I did not 'discover' her after she died, but did her tragic end increase my adoration and appreciation of her voice? I'm guilty as charged, I suppose. Therefore, while I did actually hear and love her voice in what was to be the last few years of her life, before I even knew she was ill, it would be easy for anyone to categorize me as being part of that crowd that only purchases the recording AFTER the tragedy of her early death. But I assure you, I discovered her voice BEFORE the sadness of her early death, and before National Public Radio (Stateside) and BBC-2 (in the UK) and the "Songbird" release (which occurred nearly a full year-and-a-half after she died) later made her "famous." Upon first hearing Cassidy, it took me a while to sense Eva's vocal range and her capability, which she almost seemed to keep deeply hidden, and at first I wasn't even sure whether she was a soprano who could 'dig deep' into the contralto range, or whether she was a mezzo soprano who could occasionally reach both 'up' and 'down' and occasionally do so as necessary. Again, I am not a musician! But it is not her range or classification that gives Cassidy her beautiful sound: I think it is her ability to find those 'in-between' notes, those often-magical frequencies that lie at a special place in what I might call 'within the interstices' of the notes that typically make up usual musical scale. Cassidy also possesses a powerful control over her breathing, and at times, when you are certain she should take another breath, out comes six or seven more notes and another whole verse of music. I don't even know what the musical term is for this, but not many singers have this extra lung power. Also very characteristic I think is the way Eva takes a familiar song and breaks up the syllables in her own unique way, with some use of what I believe is called "rubato," and yet it's this and something more. Other singers who excel at this are Diana Krall, a popular Jazz Singer, as well as Erika Lewis, a phenomenal singer in the New Orleans Jazz Band, "Tuba Skinny." I think this vocal technique was also very well exemplified and used by the late J. J. Cale, as you could never tell how he might dissect or "chop up" the syllables of a verse in classic songs of his such as "After Midnight" or "Call Me the Breeze," and it seemed as though you never knew just when he might begin and end singing each word of each line in a song (even the band members often seemed surprised); but in the end, all of the vocal start-and-stop sequences and timings seem to allow the singer to finally arrive and to do so just in and on time! And I am guessing that, possibly among other things, these are maybe just a few of the things others like myself are hearing, and why we like these singers so much; and yet maybe you aren't hearing these things or you hear them and don't find them quite as mesmerizing as we do. And that's okay, but I would implore you to give her voice a bit more of a chance to reach through to you. Doesn't best Elvis Aloha from Hawaii. I think Eva is fantastic but her arrangements can sometimes veer a little from the contemporary tune. That's good for her to put her mark or a stamp on a song but particularly with Elvis's voice in Vegas she's up against it imo.

Great in all genres,perfect pitch, intuitive timing,as well as being a competent guitarist. So ,if you feel you prefer other versions with less imagination, Just bug off and leave the rest of us to bask in her brilliance
Yep. I bask thusly every time I play one of her recordings. I love to play guitar along with her and do some lead riffs as an exercise. Instead of just practicing, though, I often end up crying. Everything she did grabs me emotionally.

Everyone of musical importance that I have ever heard speak of Cassidy are in absolute awe of her. Shattered by her early demise and unhappy with how the music industry treated her. Thankfully we have her works recorded and can slip into the magic at will.

I first heard Eva in a music shop in York England over 20 years ago visiting a ex girlfriend. It reminds me of good times. Eva will always be awesome in my book.
Several of her cds have over 2,000 FIVE * ratings. All 5*. One person said the rating system doesn't work for her; that it should START at 5* and go up from there. I have watched videos of professional commentator reviewers listen to her songs and wish she was still here to see how much people love her vocals, guitar chords, everything. One reviewer was so impressed with "Fields of Gold", that he kept pausing it to praise it, and several times ran it back a bit "to hear perfect parts". Sting, whose song it is, heard a recording of her singing it and said he cried. Unfortunately, Eva had been gone for several yrs then. He stated it was better than his performance of it. Another pro reviewer was very moved when he listened to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow ". I noted him swallowing hard a lot as he listened, then tears were welling up in his eyes, until he finally took his glasses off and was wiping tears the rest of the song. I know the feeling. It's not the profound sadness of her being gone; that's incredibly sad. It is listening to such a pure, incredible voice one rarely hears, and the perfection of her handling of each song. Her amazing talent brings me to tears, often. Not sadness, just how profound and rare it is. Tears, choked up, no apologies. Thank you, Eva.

I try to read most of the comments about a video while listening to the video. Eva has many, many followers and a very few distractors. That is remarkable considering all the TROLLS on the internet. Some are not trolls but simple believe others sing a certain song better than Eva. You know what is said about opinions!!!! Anyway my comment is that Eva knew what she liked and what she wanted to sing. She may or may not have been better than "whomever" but I have not heard a single song she has sung that has not reached deep into my soul and made me so enormousely glad she recorded and I am able to listen to her. The hallmark of a great song is that it has inate flexibility built right into it so that any master singer can put their own flex, or, their interprete into their own rendition of it. And, Eva Cassudy, as a Master Sunger, did this great song the honour of interpreting it in her own way. Very well done indeed. From a Canadian Listener whose Irish Grandfather was a tenor of some note (pardon the pun), and, a fiddler, by ear (another pun), who farmed the ancestral farm, located close to the small Town of Macroon, near Killarney and the Blarney Stone, in the County of Cork, in Southern Ireland, and who sang to his family every single night (our late Mom being the eldest). So, I came by my very deep luv 😘 f music from honest to goodness and great roots. And, I never had the privilege of meeting my late Grandfather. That is one of my biggest regrets in life, even at my present age of 70 years, young. And, I'll never have the privilege of hearing the late Eva Cassidy live in concert. That's also a big regret. And, as for Gordon Lightfoot, I can remember hearing Gordie up on stage, twice, at the great Casino Rama in its Entertainment Centre with its seating capacity of five thousand, being completely sold out, both times. And, he was singing just for me, just like he was for every single person present. And, he was very tall and very elegant when he came onto the stage and simply started to perform. He did that because he was there to perform. And, he was very eloquent when speaking, here and there, after his first song. And, I was privileged back then, and, I'm still privileged to be able to look back at those two performances with such happiness, as part of my treaure trove of musical memories. So, here's to Canada, the greatest country of all in the entire world, and the birthplace of one of the musical greats who has ever graced the great stages of the entire workd, and who has ever written a great song and n this worldhroughout the world, the Late Gordon Lightfoot.
Time takes us all in the end, I only wish that when my time comes I can be surrounded by the ones I love. I can ask for nothing more or nothing less. RIP EVA Where ever you are I hope you found your way home.

It's unbelievable that Eva's voice range is a mezzo to a soprano range, yet her voice is so gentle and sweet.
Contralto, I'd say. Her key choices are perfect for me and I'm nowhere near as high as a soprano. It's the way she sings that makes it sound higher.

Yep. I bask thusly every time I play one of her recordings. I love to play guitar along with her and do some lead riffs as an exercise. Instead of just practicing, though, I often end up crying. Everything she did grabs me emotionally.
well .... wrong on the perfect pitch statement. "i missed my loved one so" ... flat on the word missed (and other parts of the song). this is the problem with 'fans'. full of hyperbole! she was very good. she's not great.
Everyone of musical importance that I have ever heard speak of Cassidy are in absolute awe of her. Shattered by her early demise and unhappy with how the music industry treated her. Thankfully we have her works recorded and can slip into the magic at will.
Eva has helped me through so many difficult times with her sweet voice and haunting sound. I've asked myself, 'how can I miss someone I didn't even know'?. I'm blessed to still have her music to fill me up when my soul is aching!
Comparisons are meaningless when you're listening to a beautiful voice and soul. Music is about feelings.

She had the "most beautiful" voice of all female singers. Nobody reach her level of beauty. It is amazing - every song she sung was so much better as the original. Fields of gold is one example, "Imagine" make Lennons voice as one of a false singing kid. if you want to understand the message of Imagine, listen to evas version.

Her passing at such a young was one of the greatest losses to the world of music. She must have had a beautiful heart.

I was just trying to Enlighten you. It was not the break your stones and yes I miss anything with crab meat on it as I have moved out of the area and it cost me a fortune to have crabs hard and soft shell shipped all the way up here. Take care

I first heard Eva in a music shop in York England over 20 years ago visiting a ex girlfriend. It reminds me of good times. Eva will always be awesome in my book.

Several of her cds have over 2,000 FIVE * ratings. All 5*. One person said the rating system doesn't work for her; that it should START at 5* and go up from there. I have watched videos of professional commentator reviewers listen to her songs and wish she was still here to see how much people love her vocals, guitar chords, everything.
One reviewer was so impressed with "Fields of Gold", that he kept pausing it to praise it, and several times ran it back a bit "to hear perfect parts". Sting, whose song it is, heard a recording of her singing it and said he cried. Unfortunately, Eva had been gone for several yrs then. He stated it was better than his performance of it.
Another pro reviewer was very moved when he listened to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow ". I noted him swallowing hard a lot as he listened, then tears were welling up in his eyes, until he finally took his glasses off and was wiping tears the rest of the song.
I know the feeling. It's not the profound sadness of her being gone; that's incredibly sad. It is listening to such a pure, incredible voice one rarely hears, and the perfection of her handling of each song. Her amazing talent brings me to tears, often. I will love Eva Cassidy until the day I die. She encompassed everything an exceptional musician should be. She stood so far above all others. Eva was the complete package. World class and incredibly beautiful in so many ways. We can all be thankful that God put this amazingly talented angel on this earth for a very short time. All my love Eva. I try to read most of the comments about a video while listening to the video. Eva has many, many followers and a very few distractors. That is remarkable considering all the TROLLS on the internet. Some are not trolls but simple believe others sing a certain song better than Eva. You know what is said about opinions!!!! Anyway my comment is that Eva knew what she liked and what she wanted to sing. She may or may not have been better than "whomever" but I have not heard a single song she has sung that has not reached deep into my soul and made me so enormousely glad she recorded and I am able to listen to her. She was an artist of such tremendous talent that the world needs to enjoy it.

Maybe 5 years ago I was looking up Gordon Lightfoot, and stumbled on an Elvis cover of this song, and someone in the comments mentioned Eva Cassidy, who I'd never heard of, had covered it better. So this was the first song of hers I heard, and I got kind of obsessed, and listened to everything I could find. Still makes me cry. Rest in peace, Eva, we love you still.

The hallmark of a great song is that it has inate flexibility built right into it so that any master singer can put their own flex, or, their interprete into their own rendition of it. And, Eva Cassudy, as a Master Sunger, did this great song the honour of interpreting it in her own way. Very well done indeed.
From a Canadian Listener whose Irish Grandfather was a tenor of some note (pardon the pun), and, a fiddler, by ear (another pun), who farmed the ancestral farm, located close to the small Town of Macroon, near Killarney and the Blarney Stone, in the County of Cork, in Southern Ireland, and who sang to his family every single night (our late Mom being the eldest). So, I came by my very deep luv 😘 f music from honest to goodness and great roots. And, I never had the privilege of meeting my late Grandfather. That is one of my biggest regrets in life, even at my present age of 70 years, young. And, I'll never have the privilege of hearing the late Eva Cassidy live in concert. That's also a big regret. And, as for Gordon Lightfoot, I can remember hearing Gordie up on stage, twice, at the great Casino Rama in its Entertainment Centre with its seating capacity of five thousand, being completely sold out, both times. And, he was singing just for me, just like he was for every single person present. And, he was very tall and very elegant when he came onto the stage and simply started to perform. He did that because he was there to perform. And, he was very eloquent when speaking, here and there, after his first song. And, I was privileged back then, and, I'm still privileged to be able to look back at those two performances with such happiness, as part of my treaure trove of musical memories.
So, here's to Canada, the greatest country of all in the entire world, and the birthplace of one of the musical greats who has ever graced the great stages of the entire workd, and who has ever written a great song and n this worldhroughout the world, the Late Gordon Lightfoot.
