    The way the ambassador program GBA games worked on the 3DS was by using the system's backwards compatibility with the DS, unlike the virtual console games which are fully emulated. I think the reason Nintendo never released more GBA games is because the way they worked on the 3DS is less than ideal, since they don't support sleep mode or savestates like the virtual console games. (It might sound stupid, but this is Nintendo)

      I think, like SNES on New 3DS. it also had to do with Pixel Perfect mode, but I don't know if that was confirmed for GBA like it was for SNES.

      IIRC It didn't support Streetpass either. But yeah, All of this because whenever you booted a GBA game, the 3DS rebooted into GBA mode to use the GBA hardware that it couldn't use otherwise. All of that 3DS features are disabled because it's in this GBA mode.

      @Wakefieldneo Před měsícem +1

      if you homebrew it, you can emulate GBA games on the 3DS. At least the new 3DS, i don't have one of the originals. Runs better than emulated SNES games.

    • @Wryyyong
      @Wryyyong Před měsícem +1

      @@Wakefieldneo Again, both editions of the system can _run_ GBA games in some form. The viable methods differ between the two, however:
      - The 'New' editions of the system, on top of being able to utilize the built-in AGB_FIRM to run the games natively, also have enough processing power to be able to emulate GBA games via, for example, mGBA if you _really_ want the additional features that can come with emulation such as cheats and save states.
      - The 'Old' editions of the system, however, while _techinically_ also being able to run mGBA and the like, lack the processing power required to emulate the games at full speed (resulting in lots of slowdown and stuttering), leaving AGB_FIRM as the only viable option.

    • @Wakefieldneo
      @Wakefieldneo Před měsícem

      @@Wryyyong But the fact that they can be emulated at full speed on the new models does mean it could've been added to the eshop at the same time as the SNES games IF emulation were the reason for their lack of inclusion earlier. The point being that we can rule out a lack of emulation capability being the reason it was never released.

    I remember that I was really mad that they didn't bring the GBA games to the actual Virtual Console shop because I only had the original 3Ds model and I wondered why, if they can't bring "A Link to the Past" from NES to the console, then why couldn't they have brought over "A Link to the Past + 4 Swords" from the GBA over?

    • @thatboi1567
      @thatboi1567 Před měsícem +4

      Probably because the gba virtual console games werent being emulated, they were actually running natively on the console, so there wasnt really emulation for gba, and nintendo wanted gba emulation for stuff like save states I think

    • @rakurai4953
      @rakurai4953 Před měsícem +7

      @@thatboi1567 The fact that the games were running natively on the console proves my point more than it disproves it.
      Running the games natively is even easier than emulation at that point. It's just a means of making a system update to be able to read GBA files downloaded from the eShop. I've looked into this and it's even possible to add GBA games never added to the console like ALTTP + 4 Swords and Final Fantasy 6 Advanced when modding. You just need to adjust the rom file

      Nintendo is an awful company, that's why. 3ds would have been perfect for emulating the entire library of the gbc gba nes snes etc

      @@rakurai4953 Still, I think they wanted emulation, because running the games natively meant that you couldnt use save states, and the sleep mode also doesnt work, which would be pretty bad

    Fun fact about SFC VC: The emulator that's used also supports the SDD-1 chip, meaning that Star Ocean or SFII Alpha could run on it theoretically
    And here's another fun fact: Famicom Remix Best Choice actually uses very similar tech to the FC VC.

  • @Jacks_game_room

    I was so upset that SNES games were NEW 3DS games exclusive. This thing can run resident evil revelations but not earthbound?

    • @PSRFOX
      @PSRFOX Před měsícem +1

      The thing about emulation is that you are not running JUST the game itself, but also a recreation of original console's hardware through the software means underneath it. And the more complex the original hardware is, the more CPU you need to properly emulate it - so emulating SNES requires way more power than, say, NES or Gameboy.
      Now, could the original 3DS do that? Yes, it could (and did, through "unofficial" means). But it wasn't ideal, with some games running just fine, while others having constant framedrops or emulation bugs. That problems probably *could* have been ironed out with some rom adjustments and whatnot, but I guess Nintendo just decided to focus on the more powerful, less problematic New 3DS that could run most games "out of the box" and close to their standards. Or you can say they did it just to boost the appeal of New 3DS, if you are from that side of history.

    • @Jacks_game_room
      @Jacks_game_room Před měsícem

      That’s a good point. Thanks for the input, But still I think there was probably a better way around it. Nintendo most likely just wanted an easy way to make money in a dry year for new releases.

  • @S.J.C._Entertainment
    @S.J.C._Entertainment Před měsícem +4

    The stupid thing is that the original 3ds CAN run snes games but instead they only let new 3ds users buy them. Probably just so there’s one extra selling point for the new models.

    Snes on old 3DS is an artificial limitation. There's Snes emulators for the DS and DSi, there's also unofficial Snes emulators for the old 3ds if you hack it. It's just Nintendo trying to give the New 3DS more exclusives

    3DS Virtual Console had a lot of interesting releases. In addition to the mainline Pokémon games, Murasame Castle and Recca, we also got the Donkey Kong Land games, Shante, Sonic Triple Trouble and Sonic Chaos, Donkey Kong 94 and Toki Tori to name a few.
    What held the 3DS VC back (at least in the NA version) was the fact that it was the lack of any Neo Geo Pocket titles, which would have been fantastic! Also, despite being a consistent supporter of the 3DS, there weren't any Square Enix titles on 3DS VC. You would think that the first Mana game, Dragon Quest Monsters or even FF6 would be on the 3DS, but nope! Only in Japan!

    It’s infuriating that instead of releasing digital versions of DS games and GBA Virtual Console on the 3DS eShop they instead released them on the Wii U of all things. The fact Nintendo also didn’t release GameCube games on the Wii U was another missed opportunity.
