I think the closest I’ve ever been to death was on Devil’s Backbone on Mt Baldy. With lots of fresh snow on the ground, I didn’t expect to encounter any ice and ventured toward the summit with only snowshoes - leaving my crampons in the car. I vividly remember barely clinging to icy rock and slipping with hundreds of feet of rocky exposure below. With my first child on the way at the time, I’ve since improved my mountain adventure decision making ☺️

@@HJKelley47 Happy to! I’m more analytical than most and my decision making process is much more calculated than it may initially appear - but I am also a lover of fun experiences! If you’ve ever snowboarded in multiple feet of fresh powder, you’ll know the truly unique feeling of flying and freedom that you get unlike anything else - a feeling that’s worth some amount of risk! I knew the powder in the Baldy Bowl was epic that day and only a few hour hike would yield some of the best turns of my life. With mostly benign powder to hike through, the hike itself didn’t pose much danger - it was just a short portion of the route scrambling on a rocky ridge-line that posed the issue. My mistake was not anticipating the amount of ice buildup that would be on the ridge where the snow had blown off - in hindsight, I should’ve spent extra energy to avoid the ice completely. I’m thankful I lived to learn. Moving forward, my goal hasn’t been to avoid risk at the peril of fun and adventure, it’s been to better manage my backcountry adventures to maximize fun while accepting only a reasonable (to me) amount of risk.

@@HJKelley47 yes, I am saying that. But we all risk our lives for experiences. With roughly 40,000 car crash deaths per year in the US, driving to an art museum would be risking your life for an experience. We all accept levels of risk in our lives. My goal is to operate so safely in the backcountry as to make the drive the most dangerous part of the trip.

As a hiker and climber WTF do you want to climb in adverse weather conditions? Why? These folks are obviously amateur hikers at best and will not be surprised that they have day packs and no provisions for the worse case scenario as in food, flashlight, extra pants and warm clothing. Putting lives in rescuers and other folks. They should be penalized. I have climbed many times in Northern California and Nevada where as an example there is warning signs if you go beyond 9K feet. In one instance we had a jerk that we med on the hike trying to go up with a Jeep. Yes he tried to go to the top via a trail with a Jeep! He got stuck in the snow. Imagine you're walking through the forest and you see a bear or mountain lion running at you full speed. If it's a bear you'll hit it, maybe, but because you're carrying pistol rounds it likely won't be a fatal wound, then the bear just finishes you off. If it's a mountain lion running at you, because you're so full of adrenaline and fear, and because it's moving so fast, you're very likely going to miss all of your shots; the mountain lion will then swiftly end your life by chomping down with a heavy force on your neck.
Here are some more facts: Roughly 12 people a year die from bear attacks (around the world); You are a thousand times more likely to be truck by lightning than be attacked by a mountain lion. So clearly animals are not that large of a threat; If you use common sense you can easily scare these animals away, or travel in a group to appear more intimidating.
However, it's obvious that the main threat isn't the wildlife, but other people. You may recall an incident in 2017 where two girls were killed on a hike in Delphi, Indiana. There bodies weren't found until late 2022 (I believe).
So, with all of this information in mind, it wouldn't be to bold to assume that, as long as you're travelling in a group, in an area that doesn't have a history of criminal activity, you should be safe. However, if you're hiking alone it should be your choice to carry, with the purpose of defending against humans, because firearms won't be as effective against wildlife with their goal being to kill you.
Do you think this is a fair argument?

I m glad he was found okay !!! But I wonder who is paying the bills for these rescues ???? The trails are clearly marked not to hike due to icy conditions yet these people walk in anyhow !!! They even go in without GPS and without a personal locator beacon !!!! The minimum cost to mount a search would be around 10 000 dollars and for a long search a quarter to a half million dollars looking for an individual that chose to do something they were clearly told not to do.

these people should have to pay for the resources that are used to rescue them,
you have something to prove by doing something dangerous ?, you should have to pay the price for rescue.
