People keep teaching this case as if that article is at all true and wasn't proven to be an absolute fabrication in 2007. I had a course called "Psychology of Evil" and I had to physically restrain myself from pointing that out to the teacher when he mentioned it.
Some important info is missing here. The building had two entrances. Kitty was headed to the front entrance when she was initially attacked; after that witness yelled out and the attacker first fled, she made it into the front door, at which point the witness presumed she was now safe. Unfortunately, the space inside that door was only a vestibule; there was a second interior door which was locked, and she had no key with which to open it. She was forced to go outside and walk around the building to the back entrance, which is where the killer found her and attacked her the second time. So, at that point none of the original witnesses could have seen or heard the second attack, since the building was in the way. It it also reported that one of her stab wounds hit her lung, and could have caused blood to enter that lung, thus preventing her from crying out loud enough to be heard.
My understanding was that multiple people did in fact call the police to report a crime in progress but that the police were too slow in responding.
When I was a kid, there was an instance where someone did come running to my aid. It was actually an embarrassing situation for me, but, when I look back on it, a little bit of my faith in humanity is restored. We lived backed up onto a marsh - a swampy wetland. I was playing in the creek and got a massive leach on my foot. I was terrified of leaches and started screaming at the top of my lungs. A man from way across the marsh heard me screaming and he came running through the swamp to get to me. Of course, my mom also came flying out of the house, thinking something was seriously wrong. The man ended up getting the leach off my foot and mom gave me a talking to about not screaming unless it was a real emergency (broken bone, being abducted, etc.). I was very lucky to have someone come running without a second thought to help a child.
You should ABSOLUTELY do a video on the Attica Prison riots. Lots of controversy and police/political ineptitude.
Simons writers, could anyone do a study of the Atlanta Child Murders case? It’s a FASCINATING care that’s very complex. Prime for a 4 hour type script. Love you guys
I'm old enough to remember when you had to know the individual phone number for each of the emergency services - police, ambulance, fire. My mother had them on a note near the phone. I'm sure it was cold comfort to her family and girlfriend that Kitty's death helped get the system implemented, but it has saved many others.
This kind of thing still happens; when my ex was ~20 she was attacked for over an hour outside her house at ~5-6AM and nobody came out to help, nobody called police or did anything to assist her or deter the attacker. She only escaped because she fought him off until the sun rose after which he fled.
Simon, honestly, I genuinely enjoy your speculations about American phrases and geography. It doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong, it’s just human and honest and delightful. And you almost always own when you’re wrong, which sets you apart.
Once got to find out that I live in a decent community. My brother and I were standing out the front of our house and thought we heard heard someone scream for help two streets away. We only paused long enough to try and hear if we were right and where it was coming from. Got there, it was a dog attack. At least ten other neighbors were already out, including an off duty nurse, someone was already driving a badly injured dog to the vet, ambulance was called, ranger had already been called, and a group was organising to find the attacking dog and its owner. Pretty much everyone there'd had the same reaction as brother and I; heard screaming and ran out into the street to help. Good folks!
When you ask 'What would you think if you had to call for help?'
I'll never forget seeing my neighbour beating his girlfriend and being on the phone as he kept on pulling her around whilst her kids watched. Then later on telling people someone said I should have just minded my own business! Luckily he was sent to prison and she left him
So there's a Netflix doc on this and her brother found out she actually died in the arms of a neighbor, a friend, who was trying to comfort her.
During my almost decade-long tenure as an ER nurse, and my prior experience as a volunteer first responder, I discovered that a warm hand and a reassuring voice were more effective in calming patients than any medication. Many patients expressed their gratitude by saying, "Thank you for holding my hand through this."

Hi Simon!
Situation in my hometown in Australia, had a douchebag harassing me, I didnt have a phone on me, called out to another woman walking by to call the police please... All I got was "I don't know the number" as she briskly kept walking away.
Last time I was this early Simon has a nuanced take on the death penalty
I got a chance to help a few months ago, an old man was being robbed outside my apartment building. I felt such rage at 2 men robbing an old man I ran out to confront them. The old man got to run away while the 2 men beat the shite out of me. They are in jail and I’m to be compensated for my injuries. Moral of the story? Go to the gym if you’re gonna take on 2 dudes robbing an old man
