at 8:40 you say you don't have correct bleed block. the thick end of the yellow disc spacer actually is the correct bleed block.
Good Catch! Yes I must admit as I was editing the video, I was looking at them and thinking I bet if I had flipped them over they would have worked..! they seem to have also have a bit in them that you could use to hold the hose when fitting the barb. I'll pin your comment hopefully people see it!

I attached Zee levers to MT5 calipers. Works perfectly.
Magura and Shimano hoses don't have exactly the same size. You should use a Magura pin on the hose and the Shimano olive. That's the best combination! You use Magura stuff on the caliper side and Shimano parts on the lever side. Other combinations might also work, but are not recommended.
Also you should push the hose into the lever while tightening the thread. Not doing this ist the most common source of leakage problems at the levers.

Good thing came across this video. I have a leaky Magura MT5 lever. Tried fixing with a new master cylinder piston but was still leaking. Managed to purchase a set of Shimano SLX M7100 levers at less the price of just 1 Magura lever. Just waiting for my new barbs, olives and bolt in the mail and I'll do the conversion this weekend. Can't wait!
How did it work out? I have the MT7 Raceline and the lever went soft after a few month. Magura sent me a complete MT7 Pro set under warranty, but the rear is still softer than the front brake. Thinking of putting Shimano levers in.

It's not different pins for different levers, it's depending on the inner dimensions of the hose itself. BH-90 is 2.1mm wide ID, and BH-59 is 2.5mm ID, the BH-59 pins are made of brass usually, and BH-90 out of stainless steel :)

Cracking review - I fitted a pair of MT5s to some ~2013 XTR trail levers in much the same manner. I have not tried them in anger yet, but first impressions are good.

If you leave/put the retention screws into the calliper, you can put the yellow bleed blocks in properly and they clip in place onto the retention screws. You push the bleed block in from the bottom with the skinny side first. You'll see there's a little 3/4 circle that clips onto the retention screw and holds the thick part of the bleed block in the right place.

Magura are crazy powerful, but shimano have a lovely leaver feel. I dont run shimano anymore because of the changing bit point when you heat them up. This could be an amazing setup to have that sharp leaver feel and crazy powerful and consistent brakes. I do have some xt brakes spare i could take apart and fit to my mt7s! Keep going mate. Yer it's sad that Shimano have had this issue with there brakes, it really seems to put people off them, personally I have never had a issue with them and I've used loads of there brakes over the years (Old xtr single pot callipers with xt levers/ old xt's / saints / zee's / and now the new XTR 4pots...) and that's just the Shimano ones I've used... @@prototypecomponents i dont think its much of an issue in thr UK. Its when you go out to the alps etc and really put some heat into them. This was an old set of xt 2pot brakes from 2018 on a full on enduro bike. Just before they brought out the 4pot upgrade. No issues with the magura mt7s, but the leaver feel isnt as nice as shimano imo.

Yes I thought I was magic the first time I saw it... lol seems to make a bigger difference with dot fluids in other brakes but certainly makes me more careful how I store handle my fluid, best not to shake the bottle around just before using it...
@@prototypecomponents I use royal blood and I couldn never bleed my maguras properly because every time I passed the fluid through those micro bubbles would appear time to time. All those hours wasted 😂😂😂

When you pushed the pistons back in you potentially drove contaminants into the caliper; Park tools has a great video on how to prevent this...

Nice video! I ordered some Aliexpress aluminum levers, because the magura material feel kinda soft. I also feel like magura hose is bad quality compared to a shimano. Do you know if I can replace the hose with a shimano one?
Thanks! I haven't been able to get my front MT-7 to feel right. I think I'm going to try a shimano lever and see if that does the trick.
Hope it works out well for you. lever feel is definitely a personal preference thing but personally i much prefer the Shimano feel.

Cheers for the video! Just did my install with MT5s/ shimano xt8000. Heaps more power and slightly reduced modulation but nothing dramatic. Using shimano bh59 barb and olive, will report back in afew months if there's any leaks etc.

Hi, I'm planning use the Magura MT5 brakes (I found a good deal on eBay) with my Shimano Deore XT brake levers (model BL-M800) which barb an olive I should get BH90 or BH59? thank you.
Watching this as i had a dumb day yesterday doing dumb crashes doing Downhill trails on my Downhill bike as it was the 2nd day in a row id been MTB & it was really hot & i was too tired to be riding in retrospect lol, oh & i pedal my DH rig up half of the hill cos i dont wanna pay for a chairlift & we can just drop in for free, from the council trails into the bike park.. And its the 2nd week ive been back MTB after doing my PCL 4 months ago, so my 4th time back riding, so my confidence is shot & i was overthinking shit lol..
So anyway, i had a dumb crash, one of 3 yesterday, & broke my MT5 rear lever & had to front brake the whole way down the hill which wasnt fun, after attempting to ride down a blue trail with just the front brake & failing miserably haha, washing out on the first switchback, falling over & miraculously avoiding damaging my rehabbing PCL on more rocks haha! So after just walking it till i got to a tarseal road, just front braking down 300m decent was tremendously unenjoyable to say the least!.. So now im DONE with Magura levers & looking at the Shigura set up so this is really informative.. Cheers! :)
What i love about the MT5s is the modulation & stopping power in perfect balance. What i now obviously hate about Magura is the levers.. So with the Shigura setup what's the modulation like? Does it improve on shimano which is very off/on i feel, while giving the peace of mind of reliability? Ive run SRAM Codes before & while they have modulation the stopping power is rubbish, I found i had to be on the brakes more. The modulation of the Maguras is awesome while the stopping power is amazing & so reliable. Obviously the levers are terrible..
So is Shigura really the best of both worlds, does it just improve the leaver reliability or the whole braking action itself? Bear in mind im doing either short but steep dark-blue/single black runs, long flow descents or longish but steep dark-blue/single black runs depending where im riding, often 400m vert descents.. Although keeping it to no more than dark blue until I'm fully done with rehabbing..

anyway i have two critics...1 dont use a stealhammer for the insert and 2 it looks like you push the lever without pads or disc in the caliper, would end bad^^...

Cool glad you like the video, don’t worry about the hammer it takes very little force in fact it’s easier to push it against your bench or wall but as I was filming this wasn’t practical. I kept the old pads in the whole time but should have used the yellow disc spacers as they work as brake blocks too. Yer I’m Definitely better at crashing than most people…
I did mt7/shimano xtr lever shigura setup and I definitely like them way more than mt7 with hc lever .
Very crisp and lever feel is better , plus there is modulation and lots and lots of power.
Did one ride so far on this setup and getting used to it .

I had same exact setup as Stella mt7 with xtr leavers for more than a year now . Haven’t had single issue , always crisp and bite point always at same spot , good modulation and tons of power especially with mdrp rotors and race pads .
The BH90 barb won’t work long-term, as the Magura hose has a 0.2mm larger ID than BH90. However the Magura barb’s ID (where the barb connects to the fittings in the lever. The solution is to use a BH59 barb, which is the same size as the Magura barb, but interfaces with any Shimano lever.
Thanks for your comment but personally I'll stick with what I'm running, until I have an issue as its working fine for me. tbh it makes more sense to me to have the correct barb for the lever the bore diameter is more about fluid flow, I imagine so if you wanted a snappier lever feel maybe worth trying a bigger bore. But it works fine for me as is.

For this kind of riding you need the MT7 Raceline, the one that Danny McCaskill promotes (just glad he doesn't have to pay for it ;-) although I must say this brake always locks up my wheels when I want to with just 1 finger.
Originally reffered to as SHAGURA before MTB dads renamed it. Should use genuine royal blood mineral oil in Magura calipers as the change in viscosity leads to inconsistent bite points which is often assosiated with Shimano brakes.
viscosity is pretty similar but the boiling point is very different. A lot of complaints about the royal blood fading.

Umm good question, i haven't use one for 15 years it was good for the time I think it lacked some modulation and not the best for locking up but that was a long time ago on a small rotor so maybe with better these days I suspect cost is the main reason you don't see that many of them.

Are the hose nuts that screw into the outlet ports on the levers to hold the hose onto the levers the same thread size for both Magura and Shimano? I have Magura brakes on the bike and am switching the levers to Shimano BL-M8000 but the levers don't come with hose nuts. Are the Magura hose nuts the same thread size? Can't find any info on line.
I think your best to get the shimano nuts to give the best chance of success (that’s what I did)

Great, but I've only used them for trials so can't really say how the fair on long descents or something like that. but other people seem to rate the setup for more regular mountain bike disciplines to.

Standard Pads, probably best, i switched the rear ones for Trial tech pads to get more lock up for trials but tbh they have so much power anyway this might is probably over kill and sacrifices the ability to drag the brake slightly when manualing etc. your get use to the power and find the modulation after a few rides.

Hi, for some practical+aesthetic reasons i'm contemplating running magura calipers with the dura ace road levers. Do you think this cross-brand/type combination will work?
Might be possible, but I don’t know. I would probably recommend against it unless your in a real pinch. To me on my setup I find them a little bit more Grabby probably not a very good thing on a road bike. But who knows might be good if you have the time and money… why not have an experiment

Do you know how these compare with full Saint setup? It seems like I can save some money with Shigura, but I also want the best performance (second to Trickstuff that is).
Never ran full saint setup personally, use to run zee's and I imagine there pretty similar, Shigura probably has a bit more power, I would say. but its more of just a fun setup to run if you like experimenting or have Maguras but don't get on with the levers.

If you are bleeding the lever, it should be in the upper position in relation to the caliper, the point is that the brake hose should go straight from the caliper to the lever so that the air bubbles escape through gravity upwards, and your hose comes out of the top cap, goes up and then in down to the lever and this makes it difficult for air bubbles to travel to the funnel.

@@tomgroenbeck7620 When performing a bleeding service, we place the bike on a service stand which allows us to rotate the bike in any position, so if we do not want to dismantle the pins holding the brake cable (which is easy and takes a moment) to dismantle the brake, just turn the bike to a vertical or semi-vertical position to be able to bleed with the brake mounted on the bike and the hose running vertically from the bottom caliper up to the lever regardless of how the brake hose was routed in/on the frame.

EDIT: I just ordered the BL-M9120 XTR levers because of you :) I figured I would have them on deck for when I inevitably break my Magura levers with the HC3 blades. I won't be replacing levers all the time, I''ll give them their fair chance but as soon as they break I'll have the XTR's on deck that way I'm not out of riding while waiting for levers.
Sorry for slow reply... hard to keep on top of replying with so many subscribers... ;) Yes use the Magura Hose. I think it will work with most Shimano levers just make sure you get the right barbed insert to match your lever I have the XTR levers on my Enduro bike (with xtr callipers) there really nice levers little bit lighter weight build wise than the saints but still way better than the Magura levers.

In your experience with the Shimano levers appearing to have a smaller master cylinder, how do you find the affects the performance of the levers with things like lever feel, modulation, bite, and longevity (when the pads where down, does the smaller MC affect the self adjust ability of the pistons?). It's shame too because I actually really like the lever feel of the Maguras with the HC3 levers and a good bleed. I just can't see how or why they made such a good set of brakes and especially calipers and provide such cheap levers. I mean even if they wanted to stick with the Carbotecture they could they would just need to use threaded inserts everywhere and probably some design changes to strengthen them as well as remove/reduce some of the finicky features like the BAT adjust or spring/pin setup. Just seems like they really are turning off a lot of potential customers with the lever design. not everyone is willing to mess with either buying new levers or retrofitting a Frankenstein setup like we are.
@@sml2238 Very hard to tell if they have a smaller or larger Master cylinder to be honest they are very different in overall design. I've only used them for trials which they are great for, but that is quite a different use case to normal mountain biking. I know people do complain about Shimano brakes having a changing bite point (which could well be down poor heat management) I've never had the issue myself with Shimano brakes but I don't often ride that many super long descents requiring a lot of braking and always run large floating large rotors (mostly because they look cool...).
@@prototypecomponents gotcha. I saw a chart someone made on some forums with the actual MC sizes and the shimano was smaller. I do ride trails and bike park so my use case is certainly different. anyways I was able to get a good install and bleed on my set so im running with the stock levers with the HC3 levers for now. if I have problems in the future ill switch to these M9120 XTR levers so all good. thanks for the info!
@@sml2238 If you're used to your mt7/hc3 levers, the Shigura setup will have more lever throw and will feel spongy in comparison. The lever throw will get noticeably worse as the pads wear too. To get the closest feel to hc3 levers, go with XTR Race levers. They don't have servowave, but the lever will feel firmer with a shorter lever throw.
I already got xtr m9120 break set . I want to change my callipers with MT7. Do I still have to do same things with the levers ? Or just change it callipers ? Please help .
most people seem to say its easier to replace the Shimano hoses with Magura ones to get the best connection. (less chance of leaking)

You'll be disappointed by the lever feel. The mt7/hc3 lever feels sooo much better than servowave shigura. Only go shigura if you're constantly crashing and braking levers The mt7 lever body is already sturdier than the mt5. Paired with the hc3 levers, the lever feel is amazing. Shigura will feel spongy in comparison, and you'll also get that wandering bite point issue that Shimano has. If you really want to do it, your best bet is the XTR Race levers. Without the servowave, you won't run into the wandering bite point issue. It'll also feel very much like the hc3 levers. I had the opportunity to try the combo on someone else's bike. XTR Race levers with Magura calipers is the way to go if you really want to go shigura. Another thing to take into consideration is that it is much easier to get a perfect bleed with a full Magura brakeset due to the ability to easily do a vacuum bleed. The Magura vacuum bleed method blows the Shimano funnel bleed method out of the water. czcams.com/video/Bl8PChRadX0/video.html
@@dukeofmtb So if it's so bad, how come tons of people love Shigura (even with servo wave levers), and how come tons of people don't get the wandering bite point issue with servo wave Shigura setups?
BTW there are plenty of bleed kits out there that come with syringes for Shimano levers, but getting a good bleed with a funnel isn't exactly rocket science.
@@HOllyBOni I've met tons of people that think their Shimano brakes are perfect, but then when I give their levers a few pulls, one side has a ton of throw vs the other, and the other side pumps up after a few pulls. I think some people just aren't as picky about that. A lot of folks also go Shigura for durability reasons. And although it's true that the funnel bubble bleed for Shimano brakes is super easy to do, the vacuum method on Maguras is even easier and works 99% of the time. When Shigura works, it works fine, but I still personally prefer the hc3 levers. It's just personal preference. If you prefer the feel of Shigura, you do you, broski. 👍
@@dukeofmtb I'am now trying mt7 calipers wtih zee levers on my hex. I knew the pull would have more "starting friction" because of the servowave. I also did not expect it to be as good as the MT7 HC3 lever. But the feel is straight up rubbish, I must be doing something wrong... the brake is powerfull, took it for a test ride. the problem is that once the zee lever reaches the bite point, it feels SO spongy, with a bit of effort I can pull it all the way to the handle bars. I bled them 2 times now. I cutted of the olive to save the length of hose, and swapped it for shimano one (left the magura barb in hose).

it would be better with a bigger one ID pin.
oh didn't know that about the magura fluid. personally i would advice shimano fluid as its more readily available should you need to get some in a rush when away from home. but I'm pretty sure people have mixed them with out any major issues. maybe try your front break one way and the back the other and see if you can tell a difference?

If they are both mineral oil and you can ensure a proper seal with the line and lever, then yes.
you can get yourself a tourch to burn your disc and pads and sand them a pit in case they got contaminated. saves lots a money

Yer still using it no problems so far but I don’t use this bike loads sadly but now issues and some people have commented they have been using the setup for a long time with no issues.

Easier to do the setup with Magura hoses so you shimano to Magura interface is at the lever not the calliper.

Works best with Magura hose might be possible with Shimano hose but more difficult to get a good connection at the calliper end.
If you would watch magura channel how to bleed brakes you would now that before bleeding calliper you need to lift it higher than your lever so not loosing oil and not bringing air inside ;)

It all depends which way the bleed goes, if ur pushing from caliper then it would be lower than lever, if its from lever then the caliper is higher, its to do with air bubbles rising up to exit points.

I would have thought so just check you get the correct corresponding barb insert for them.

Well I personally really like Shimano brakes there is quite a vocal minority that don’t though so maybe that’s a good reason but personally I find this setup offers a bit more bite which is great for trials.
How bout keeping the Magura levers and using the Shimano brake setups

I have SLX 2 pistons, If I change to Magura MT5 - stopping power will grow? SLX rotors are fine with this set?
Comes down to pads ur using, not really the caliper, not sure why u wud want to change those slx 2pots, mine are monsters, stick some js04 metal pads in with some metal pad rotors, u can also up the braking power with larger rotors, 180mm 203mm.
If u want context to my slx, m675 metal pads, sm-rt 66 rotors will stop my ebike very good, minimal fade, 160nm of torque is alot of power to stop.

Hi, thank you for the video, i was hoping to Change my XT calipers for magura MT7, since i already have Shimano levers with 4 pot Shimano XT calipers, front and rear.
Do you know if it is possible for me to just Change the calipers and mantain all the Shimano assembly, hoses, barb, Olive. Will the Shimano hose, fit at magura calipers?

Short answer: not sure, to be honest. Long answer: I know that using Magura barbs in Shimano hoses cause leaks but if you where to use the the Shimano connector with Magura caliper and bolt maybe..? but my gut says no though... only one way to try... let me know if it works! having said that a mt5 complete set is pretty dirt cheap and I think the only difference between them and mt7's is the pads and screw in pad pins.

The Shimano hoses wont work with the Magura caliper. The banjo inner diameter is a little wider, so you wont get a good seal. Use Magura hoses with Magura barbs. Any olive is fine.

Yes I believe this is pretty common, and one of the most low cost ways to get the setup working well. I would have probably gone for SLX if I hadn't found some Saints at a good price.
Is Magura caliper really superior to Shimano calipers ?
I mostly a personal preference thing tbh. I really like Shimano brakes but the Magura callipers are big solid chunks of metal! which means less flex and more of a heatsink, so yer there good but Shimano aren't bad at all.
Magura calipers have a small space for a disc and that causes difficulties to center the caliper and not hear disc rub on break pads. Also even tiny disc bend is the pain in the ass of the same reason
umm Yer I guess setup is a little bit trickier than some in that respect, but it does result in a good lever feel, when setup right. so guess its a bit of a Compromise.

i just cant get the olive to seal up :( ive tried it 3 times already and all of them come out crooked. this ist the first time shigura for me, however it is definitely not the first shimano brake i refitted. ridiculous. even tried different olives and pins and even an old brake lever that i know was sealing properly with a shimano hose.
i dont know what else to do :(
Umm sorry to here your having trouble with the setup not sure why it’s not working out for you maybe if you have some spare length in your hose you could trim a bit off and maybe your have better luck…

after a lot more fiddling without any positive results i did a bunch of research and found out, that shimano has 2.1 ID hoses and 2.3. silver pins go in the 2.1 and golden pins in the 2.3. magura has a 2.2 ID hose so i figured ill try the bigger golden pin to expand the hose a bit more so that the olive sits less lose over it (and thus preventing it from getting krooked while deforming in the lever).
after i made that work (on the second attempt) there was no oil leaking at the lever.
BUT: i was still abled to pull the lever back to the bars when applying continous force.
because i couldnt see any leakage around the brake i deducted, that the main piston seal in the lever has to be damaged. to prove that theory i took the old brake, tested if the bitepoint of it is constant and then fitted the new lever to it. et voila the lever did work and the piston seal was in fact sealing properly. to make absolutely sure i fitted the lever of the old brake i knew worked as intended to the magura and surprisingly it was not leaking upon first attempt (yay!).
well even with the proven to work old lever i was abled to pull it to the bars after 10 or so seconds.
first thing did then was to refit the old brake as it was and make sure that my cursed hands wont brake it magically :D.
so back to where i was in the beginning. new lever (that i now know is not defect) on the new magura hose with the golden shimano pin and olive.
after bleeding the lever again i was already paranoid and wanted to make absolutely sure that the seals in the lever work because i still couldnt make out any leaks whatsoever. so i just barely filled the shimano bleed-bucket thing and pulled 3 or 4 times. nothing still no leaks of the system. pulled some more and noticed the brake is 'drinking' from the funnel. so the oil had to go somewhere! i rechecked the whole system and sure enough there was oil leaking from the banjo. but not the mounting point with the orings to the caliper but at the connection of the hose to the banjo.
the magura hose is made of 3 layers. an inner liner, some kind of mesh (to hold the pressures) and the outer skin.
apparently i managed to either damage the hose inside or it was already damaged or the olive didnt seal up proberly agains the hose.
i 'filled' the mesh-layer of the hose with oil up to the point where it comes out of the connection at the banjo😫.
as the hose is lost anyway im going to try to fit it with the magura pin and olive tomorrow again... (yes ive already tried that before i went with the gold shimano pin but couldnt make it seal in the lever...)
the whole thing is ridiculous. i fitted dozens of shimano brakes over the years. starting with the old style levers and the old saints. xt, several zee, bunch of new saints and slx's. heck i did some brakes for friends too. i have never had any of those issues...
tldr: i shouldve just stayed with the saints i already had.
@@HannyDart ha 😂 I feel your pain sometimes working on a bike is like a dream and you feel like a total boss! and other times on something simple its like hitting your head against a brick wall, don't take it to heart sometimes sh!t just happens - my guess from what you have said is the hose has delaminated and that's preventing the hose fittings to clamp up correctly, I had a hose on a formula brake setup go 'really weird' and I had to buy a whole new hose. good luck hope you get to the bottom of it!

Yer there good brakes not tried there newer ones but always found the levers wobble a bit up and down which never caused a problem but given there quite a lot of money I think other brands offer better value for performance love there floating rotors though!

It’s Shakira, the famous Colombian pop singer. It a pun on shigura sounding similar to shakira, it’s also seems to be quite effective click bait, as this is by far my most popular video.
The only reason anybody ever did this is because shimano didn’t used to make 4 piston calipers.
I guess the broken lever scenario checks out but I strongly believe most people will be happier with just about any full, single-branded brake set.
I agree, I wouldn’t have bothered if I hadn’t broken the lever on the other side myself but having done the switch I could see the benefits the saint level is a much high quality lever but a a full saint or zee setup would be good too.

Don't worry, tons of people ride and love the magura brakes. I changed the brakes on all my bikes to MT7 and MT8. Never had a problem with them. Maybe one day I'll break a lever but, if I do, I'll still prob just replace it with another magura lever. Lots of diff preferences involved.
@@CameronGo I am now paranoid about one of my levers snapping whilst breaking. My life depends on these 'plastic' levers I don't think it is just a case of replacing a broken one when a broken one can kill you.
Terrible setup, very little modulation compared to a full brake of either brand. And horrible feel when pads are getting low.
Wow sorry to here your not a fan of the setup. Brakes definitely polarize opinion, what some people love others hate. personally this setup for trials use is the best I have ever had.
@@prototypecomponents yeah setups with good pads I’ve used have been immensely powerful and I can see how they would be good for trials to be fair. I like both brands brakes i just don’t rate the setup for mtb.
@@Adam-vm8kp Yer I like both setups in there standard config feel and power wise, but unfortunately the Magura lever I found build quality wise to be to budget focused even before I broke it. but for the money there still great brakes.
