- So my 2004 Tahoe gradually developed a loud whine coming from the rear of the truck. After noticing the noise would get considerably louder after shifting into 2nd gear, I initially faulted the transmission as having some sort of a failure, resonating the noise through the drive shaft. Well after pulling the rear end apart in hopes of finding an issue, I'm happy to said I did!

More Tahoe content let’s GOOOO
I remember driving home my '99 Trans Am coupe 6spd from CO to MA back in 1999. Once I made it back to MA the rear end started to howl....yup, carrier bearing. Fixed under warranty and all was good. God I loved that Torsen diff.....made for lots of fun.
Well done Matt! Did this years ago on my 87 blazer! It was actually pretty easy I just watched CZcams videos and it turned out perfect
this playlist is gold! i have a 2002 yukon and gonna be learning a ton from the videos you've made here. looking foward to whatever you come up with next!
I love the Tahiti content! Videos like these are very satisfying to watch, thank you for explaining how to switch out the bearings and what went wrong with this diff. Can’t wait for the next Tahiti video
Bad bearings suck. Sometimes they're easy to access, sometimes it sucks to access them. Nice to see the ol' girl givin' ya some love back for your effort.
This video came out at a good time. I have been trying to diagnose a whine in my driveline. I was inbetween carrier bearings or pully or mybe a going bad converter. I am now pretty sure its my diff. G80 locker stuff. But still going to confirm first
Yay! And YAY more Trans Am!😊
It's amazing what a set of longtubes can do for you man! The Hoe needs some serious exhaust work to make the most of those mods!
Glad to see you back on youtube!!!!!
Congrats on the 100K well done and deserved, hope the income reflects it. Looking forward to TA content!
Love ur Tahoe Content!!! Please do some more!!!
When I did my chevelle the amount of measurements I went through was a pain in the ass ..but she purred like a kitten for doing it the 1st time ..but I did end up over tighten the 1st crush sleeve. Great job
I have a black 2004 z71 tahoe, I’ve learned so much about my car from your videos + you gave me so many good ideas!!! my favorite youtuber to watch when i’m looking for videos for my tahoe. keep up the tahiti content!!! your videos are very appreciated!👍
From my understanding the gear oil should indeed have a modifier in it for a g80. There is confusion on this subject because gm put out some literature saying not to ADD modifiers. What they failed to mention is they were referring to using thier own specific fluid, which already contains the modifier so more isnt necessary. I believe they even added purple dye and a scent to their fluid with modifier in it to easily tell if the fluid contains it or not.
I have an 05 Z71 with around 130k on it. Got it with about 126k. Anyways, it has a nice aftermarket sound system. Any time i would have the volume low, i would get crazy alternator whine( or so i thought) through the speakers any time i would accelerate. Always assumed it was a grounding wire issue. Fast forward to 2 months ago, i was getting some crazy grinding noises in the rear end, and it was leaking diff fluid. Took it to aamco, turns out it was the pinon bearing and pinon gasket. I had them do all 4 u joints as well. They cracked my drive shaft cause one u joint was so rusted on there. Anyways, new drive shaft and the rear end work made the crazy whine go away. Love your Tahiti vidoes
@lsxmatt I Really love Your Content. I am driving the Same Car in Black. and I learn so much from you thank you🙏🏽☺️ best regards from Germany
I remember a service bullitin in late 98 / 99 instructing to no longer use diff addative in some of the half ton axles with limited slip when I was with GMC.
To install bearings I usually just heat them up and they slip on.
It's funny. I have a 02 Tahoe and a 79 TA but I'm more into Jeeps. However I'm getting ready to overhaul my Tahoe and get it better then it has been.
Matt buddy we’re starving for trans am content
Very good my brother ❤
Nice job
I have a slight whine from my stock '92 Z28 rear end, 150K on it. Seals replaced and diff gear lube done. I'm thinking bearings next on the list. Or save up for a tried and true rear end that's torture tested 😊
All I heard was "time to work on the Trans Am"
Wow you still have that SUV wow how much money have you put into this so far. My 2001 Sierra 1500 with 124,119 miles on it I have Invested all most $18,711.04 That's what I paid for the truck and the mechanic Investement on labor and parts within the past 3 years. Funny part is the truck is far from being done. Alot of work Matt you have put into your Rig I feel your pain my freind I am right there with you with My Truck. Alot of money to completely redo your 01 Sierra into a all most new truck again. I have other $10,000 to finish everything else that's a guess of course on the mechanic I go to and his a body guy as well. That's body work and the rest of my mechanics that need fixing. I definitely didn't know it would be such a nightmare of a job.
Hey man if you come across any more sub boxes for the tahoe/yukon and also the digital dual climate control i could use them i cant find them anywhere around here in P&P and cant afford the new prices.
Autozone sells equal torque Additive very similar too gm additive works perfect for your diff,
If you're not going the trx route with the Tahoe, you could lower it and make it fast.
if he's the g80 Posi option. it's a clutch locker more than a limited slip. it's got weights that spin when one tire slips, that force locks the clutches. it will then unlock again above 20-30mph. it's kinda nice for that random once in a life time need for a Posi on a stock daily without the side effects of a true limited slip that will most likely be to worn out to do anything 300k miles later. but weak for performance use. as for fluid, the clutchs need to lock tight not slip when engaged. with the additive I've read and did experience it seemed to chatter around corners a few times when it shouldn't have using normal auto parts store stuff. so I went to the dealer, bite the bullet, paid the 25$ a bottle for the oem spec stuff. has never chattered since. from forum posts it seems it's hit or miss if it's a big deal or not.
just looked at the 6:10 mark I can see you do have the locker g80 option. be interesting if you notice anything chattering. especially since you drive in the snow and might actually use your locker. I'm down south and it's never really been used beside me trying to test it in the sand lol.
You didn't consider a "drain plug" style diff cover?
Rockauto says it all
Right tool for the job?
Yes, GM had multiple revisions of pinion bearings on early 8.6
Love the Tahoe vids. I dont hear shit👍👍👍lol
I am hoping you checked the back lash and crown gear to pinion pattern ,
Not necessary when reusing the stock gears and shims
I disagree, redesigned bearing will not be the same, maybe close enough to work but not a complete job IMHO @@terryhesticles6916
Where did you get your front coil over kit from?
Atomic Fabrication and Performance
Thanks and love the videos
I try to stick with Timken bearings .
CZcams is not showing your new videos unless searched.
I noticed that with some people I’m subscribed to as well. Don’t know what youtube is doing.
Don’t use impact for turning torque.
I decided to manual swap mine with a nv 4500 its my tow rig now im wondering about my rear end lol
Lol did you quote SpongeBob?
Another man of culture I see
Your tahoe list is confusing. Do you have more than 1 tahoe?
Chevron Delo Syngear XDM. Don’t believe this has the additive.
First
Rockauto?😂😂
You silly,
Rock auto are dropshippers
They dont own shit.
Get napa or autozone for delicate parts like that✌️✌️
