  • Drilling holes in joists for plumbing and pipes is easy and we show you how in this video. There are regulations in the UK you must follow in new build installs. However on older buildings that is impossible. We show you how to measure out, what tools you need to drill the holes, and how large to drill them.

    Worth noting that an impact driver will take those spade / flat / auger bit drill bits (1/4" hex), combined they will fit between joists up to 300 centres 😊. So long as they're decent bits, you should fly through just as easily with an impact. (Thought I'd mention incase the site may not have electricity etc)

    Great video as usual. We're starting first fix of our new home conversion (from old offices) - loads of really old joists that need reinforcing because of decades of crap plumbers, electricians, BT engineers, etc...
    I use an Erbauer angled chuck (ÂŁ16 from screwfix) instead of a special angle drill - does the job just as nicely...

    Holes drilled in joists are also supposed to be 3x hole diameter apart from the next adjacent hole. So the holes drilled at 10:04 are not to regulations. Not trying to be picky, just trying to help people out who are using this video as a guide. :)

    • @plumberparts
      @plumberparts  Pƙed 7 lety +2

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder Pƙed 7 lety +1

      So the question is if you have no choice do you drill the holes closer than you should or go outside the 25 -40% zone? Either way it isn't that critical provided the joists are not over-spanned but as you said this is about getting it past Building Control. If in doubt give them a ring.

      The funny thing about regs is where and when you have to practice them. In Colorado in the 70's and 80's, you couldn't go *beyond* 2 x depth of the joist, unless it was a laminated joist. So where he was drilling would be a clear violation. Back in another time, and in another place, that is. :)
      BTW, I still have my HoleHawg. Now that's a serious drill motor...

    I'd like to know the wisdom behind the 0.25 to 0.4 joist rule. If you drill on the neutral axis of the beam, you can drill anywhere along the length imo. By drilling holes close together you're creating a slot nearly, which would weaken the beam.

    First, let me say that in reality it's fine and not going to be weakened in a way that matters.
    BUT I don't think you've entirely followed the code:
    1) Drilling through the linked joists was off centre, code says to go through the neutral axis
    2) the group of 4 holes, code says the the minimum spacing is 3x the diameter centre to centre. Looked closer than that to me

    when drilling the holes in the joist do you need to drill them three times the max diameter apart or is it just 3 times the diameter apart of the hole size being drilled?

    • @plumberparts
      @plumberparts  Pƙed 7 lety

      There's no specific calculation, as sometimes it's a funny material, or pipe size. I always allow minimum of 2mm clearance each side. So for 22mm pipe, I'll drill a 28mm hole. Hope that helps dude!

    • @markblue777
      @markblue777 Pƙed 7 lety +1

      My question was more aimed at the spacing between the holes in the joist as from what I have read, building regs states you need 3 times the holes diameter spacing between each hole drilled. But some state it is 3 times of the max size hole that can be drilled in the joist whereas others just state 3 times the hole size being drilled (so for a 22mm hole it has to be spaced on centre at 66mm). However, if it is spaced on the max size then it does not matter what hole you drill you still need to space it like it is the max hole size being drilled so say for a 150mm deep joist has a max of 38mm hole so 114mm on centre spacing (even if you are only drilling a 15mm hole). Do you know what is the defacto rule to follow around this?

    • @mattthompson8657
      @mattthompson8657 Pƙed 6 lety +1

      Hole's must be 3x their actual diameter apart ( that's from edge to edge, not center to center i believe) and must be at least 100mm away from any notch. Hope that helps Mark

  • @sandybowman1792
    @sandybowman1792 Pƙed 5 lety

    Here in the USA, the holes drilled in those joists are illegal. You can only drill holes within the center third of the joist span. Further, the O.D. of the hole cannot be within 2" (5cm) of either the top or bottom edge of the joist. If the depth of the joist is D (with a 2" x 10", D= 10" (9-1/4" actual)), the maximum size of the hole is D/3. So, for the 2 x 10 joist, the maximum hole size is 3-1/8". As well, the spacing of the holes within the center third of the joist have to be no less than D (9-1/4" center to center). Hope this helps.

    • @wdnspoon
      @wdnspoon Pƙed rokem

      You sure that's not backwards? The centre third is where most of the stress is, so it makes no sense to encourage people to drill right there. In Ontario, we only allow notching on the top of the 1/3 span next to the supports, meaning the middle 1/3 is banned. We allow boring anywhere along the joist, so long as it's 2" from top/bottom/another hole, and doesn't exceed 1/3 the joist depth. City of Markham even shows a hole right next to the wall in its official doc: www.markham.ca/wps/wcm/connect/markham/ba6700b3-30a6-4d94-9ff2-be2a5891b897/Notching+and+drilling+of+framing+members.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&CONVERT_TO=url&CACHEID=ROOTWORKSPACE.Z18_2QD4H901OGV160QC8BLCRJ1001-ba6700b3-30a6-4d94-9ff2-be2a5891b897-msjFK1M

    @wdnspoon Pƙed rokem

    Being 0.25 of the span from the wall before you can bore seems very restrictive. Here in Ontario we have limits on where you can notch (not allowed in middle 3rd), but you can bore holes anywhere along the joist so long as it's further than 2" from the top or bottom of the joist. Even right next to the wall, the centre depth of the joist has negligible stress on it.

    2:52 of blabbering and advertisement before you even start on the substance of the video. Seriously! You have to catch and keep people from the start with the actual reason and substance for the video or like you see no one will watch and everyone will give you thumbs down! Pretty simple
