- The city's five lift bridge operators pilot the span up and down about 4,500 times every year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the Great Lakes shipping season. Their office is the pilot house, a one-room cabin perched in the middle of the bridge, above the roadway.

The relatives on my mother's side are from Duluth. Been visiting since before I can remember (recollections since about four?). I'm now 71 from Milwaukee WI. Loved having the old fog horns lull me to sleep nitghts through grade/Jr. high).
I have continued the tradition by bringing my two children to Duluth many times.
I'd have loved being a lift bridge operator. Way too late for me know. I'm sure there many out there who feel as I do.

I would think this to be the perfect job for someone tired of being retired. I'm 67 and I could work there another 10 years at least the way I feel now. Seems simple enough and pretty straight forward.
Better than some job greeting Wal-mart shoppers.
I'm so glad this video showed up in my Recommended For You list. I just recently discovered some of the channels that feature arrivals and departures for Duluth and as a result have come to respect the operators of the lift bridge. In deed this video is not as descriptive as I wish it would've been. Covering aspects of how long their shifts are what do they do in the off season would've been informative as well. But hey it's still a fine video giving personality identity to the operators. BTW I live in Marine City Michigan right smack dab on the St Clair River and see many of these freighters as they travel between Duluth and the docks where they deliver their loads.
I don't think there actually is an off season as such.
@@danmanthe9335 Well yes there is the time in the winter when they shut down because the Soo Locks are undergoing annual maintenance and all freighters are in what is known as winter lay up.

@@danmanthe9335 Jan 15 - March 25 EVERY year is the off season or WINTER LAYUP for the Lakers. This is because the locks up on Soo St. Marie are drained and being inspected and repaired.

Look Gil Stover up. He'll remember me. I have fond memories of Lester Park. I actually winter camped on the trail between the big hole nobody jumped in on the Lester and The Deeps.
Will there be ships coming into port in June? We’re from the twin cities and will be in Duluth early part of June.
