- The 1013-foot ship Paul R. Tregurtha departed with a new sound record as it went under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. The decibel meter recorded its horn blast at 125.3 decibels! The previous record holder was the ship James R. Barker. The Tregurtha is also the longest ship on the Great Lakes.

Gorgeous weather in Duluth. The PRT is carrying coal purchased by Detroit Edison from Spring Creek Mine, Montana. Under this contract BNSF Railway coal trains depart the mine three times per day. Train symbols are: C SCMSUD. The trains average 135 cars each. They are re-crewed in Glendive, MT; Mandan, ND & Dilworth, MN.
Great catch on the horn!
Bill, next level information brother. This is awesome. Never heard of this mine! Boat Friends, check it out here! navenergy.com/spring-creek/
@@vibewithmike new item I learned today. Thanks to the boat friends here.
Yeah, I know what you mean, I had no idea about that Spring Creek mine! So cool!
@@vibewithmike I did a bit more research-Detroit Edison is also buying coal now from the Antelope Mine near Gillette, WY. That’s longer transit however that would imply their price per ton at the mine is lower than Spring Creek. Train symbols for those coal trains: C ATMSUD.
Bill, I pinned your comment to the very top of the comment section. Super beneficial information for all of us.👍
Can you imagine standing on the deck, at the bow of this huge ship!?!? 125 record breaking decibels!! Heaven on earth! Thanks so much, Mike, for your videos and expertise on this vessel. All of your fans feel this way. ❤❤❤❤❤
This ship is one of the most incredible feats of human engineering. I love it so much. The PRT is so awesome.👋⛴️👍
Thanks for sharing from the UK 🇬🇧
@paultraynorbsc627 thanks Paul!
@@vibewithmike i once flew over superior and was amazed seeing those ships
@paultraynorbsc627 someday I will be able to fly over superior/Duluth. That would be very cool to see the ships from that perspective. Did you see the unexpected surprise ship departure last night? Take a look look at this video.

Wow! The Queen of the Lake is close to a _quarter-mile long!_ Horn salutes never get old! 😊💜
The PRT makes her presence known not by just her great size but also with her fantastic Horn / whistle / Klaxon. Safe trip Captain and crew!! Great video as always Mike , appreciate all of your posts!!
The PRT is the biggest and loudest ship now!!!!!📣👋👍⛴️
I think that you've turned us into "Boat Fiends" more so than "boat friends".
Thanks for all the videos, comments and information!
I never knew a thing about "Laker Boats" until I came across your channel. And now I'm an addicted fanatic for them!

Hey Mike, 👋How's it going? What a great day to watch ships. 77 degrees. That pontoon driver has a perfect spot. She never gets old to me. I always enjoy seeing her. She is a hard working vessel that is for darn sure. WOW!! New Record!! It is well deserved for the Queen of the Lakes. 🏆Hey, I jumped too. I knew it was coming but you never know exactly when. Safe travels to the captain and crew to your next destination. Beautiful, Beautiful ship!!! You really need to get someone to take some photos of these ships and the gorgeous sky. Take care my friend and chat later. 🙋🚢
Karen, the ship is so huge! It’s so impressive! How funny is that where I knew completely there was about to be a horn at a certain point, but it’s still had me jump a few inches!😂 On the video playback that first loud blast was the record noise. Did you hear it in a St. Paul?👋⛴️👍📣
@@vibewithmike 😂😂. Very faintly!!! I just love that ship. She's so awesome. 😎😎 I very vaguely remember seeing a vessel when I was there years ago and it might have been her. No wonder I am so fond of her.
I’ll bet it WAS the PRT!!!!!!
@@vibewithmike It probably was. I can remember seeing a name on the bow but I don't know if it was the PRT or maybe the, JRB. I love all of them.
Look forward to your detailed tours. A friend here in Menomonie, WI grew up in Duluth and tunes into your tours. I love the ships here. I grew up in New Haven CT on Long Island Sound and got to see a lot of freighters in my life. Watching your tours and seeing the water and boats helps me not feel so lonesome for the Ocean.
My daughter and I hope to spend a weekend in Duluth this summer and really hope to see you there. Take care and keep on with what you do so well.
I was preparing for the horn blast and still jumped out of my chair. It looked like some of the people weren't even phased by it. Great video Mike.
Katherine, should I have a sound warning label on the video? It really was that loud my friend. Wow! 📣👋👍⛴️
@@vibewithmike No- then that would ruin the surprise. Hearing the salutes between the ships and the bridge is a great part of your videos.
You got it! I’ll leave it be. Thanks!👋🙏
Wow even with the warnings from y'all and turned down volume I still jumped too! Beautiful video Mike, as always, thanks. Awesome ship! 🚢🛳️
The beach looks pretty nice too! Great day for it 😎
Tammy, I’m telling you friend, that horn was no joke! I’ve listened to the video and it’s loud there too. That first horn blast you hear is the record. It hit 125 dB.📣👍⛴️👋

Steve, thanks for watching my friend. Have an awesome Friday night.
Make no mistake, the PRT is BIG in everyway! WOW! It is almost out of the canal before it goes under the bridge, and that horn, whew!!! Great video Mike, thanks for sharing it!
Corey, if you were with me after that ship went by I don’t think we could hear each other talk!😂😂😂😂😂😂
Amazing ship. Thank you for what you do, Mike.
Johnny, yes it was. Thanks for watching bro. Have a great Friday.
You are right Mike. It never-ever gets old! Always draws a huge crowd, and for good reason. If you start watching at 1:25, as you zoomed in you'll see what looks like 6 juvenile Herring gulls. It's easy to see their mottled brown color/pattern. It takes 4 years to become a full adult Herring gull. Adults loose all of their mottling and then change to have light-gray backs, black wingtips, and white heads and underparts.
Chuck, are these juvenile Herring gulls going to grow up and be part of the gull party that shows up after each ship?
@@karengausman1459 yes they will join the party when they get old enough!!
Great observation Chuck! Boat friends, take a look at the difference between Seagulls and Herring gulls! a-z-animals.com/blog/herring-gull-vs-seagull/

Hey Mike, if you pause around the 6:15 mark when you are looking at the bridge, the 2 white dome shaped things on top of the poles are likely receivers for things like GPS, AIS, satellite internet, etc... Also, I have noticed some of the lakers with an aft pilothouse have an additional radar on the watch station on the bow, which makes sense as having close to 1000 feet of ship in front of the radar would likely block some of its visibility. Also, just above the radar there are some small instruments painted black sticking up. These are likely weather related. It looks like an anemometer for reading wind speed and direction. Absolutely crucial information when you are sailing on a ship that is essentially a floating wall. Also, sounds like the PRT is coming after the JRB in a big way.

@@vibewithmike wow that is pretty awesome... I'll be downtown Monday. I'll see if it's there yet. I'll do a video on it if it is.
Look how huge that cruise ship is on the Mississippi River. That’s crazy!⛴️⛴️⛴️
Tregurtha is a good Cornish name, the small hamlet of Tregurtha, and Tregurtha (tin) Mine are not far from here, near the village of Marazion in the far South West of the UK
Paul R. Tregurtha has Two horns: It’s Regular Ship horn, and a Horn it stole from a Locomotive.
Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to watch the video and leave a comment. Take a look at this link. This is my favorite ship video of the past season. There was tons of sea smoke on Lake Superior. It was unbelievably cold too! czcams.com/video/mKzamgCa6zw/video.htmlsi=b9s-KKJx4XzauwOV
What a majestic ship ..,the biggest bsddest ship in the water ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
100%
PRT is the biggest and best and loudest too!👋⛴️👍
Thank you sir 👍
Have an awesome Friday night Rod!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍
Grandma's!!! Best cheesecake I've ever had!
Kelly, you are so right! I told friends this before. They have all those cool things inside on the wall too.
gotta love all the kids there
That is one of my favorite things. Seen those kids getting to witness one of these ships for the first time. That’s what happened to me when I was about five years old when my parents brought me down by the lift bridge. Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to watch the video and leave a comment. @@vibewithmike being CDN i would travel down with parents to st clair river and behold these ships
There is something about the ships that just call you back. I think they’re so fantastic. I can’t get enough of them.
under blue water bridge there is a chip truck and cold pepsi. what a way to spend a day. no better then that @@vibewithmike
@gettingold59 now you are talking! I could sit there all day with that truck right behind me watching those ships
Is that interstate bridge off the east of Rices point move, or is it high enough for the big freighters to pass under?
Bike Star, great question friend! Go to 7:49 in this video and you’ll see the bridge firsthand. Ship can go under. czcams.com/video/jcL08yL1pns/video.html
Good evening. That was loud even on video. We had a beautiful sunny day with a Fahrenheit of 80 plus. We had heavy rain for a few hours during the evening
A lot of people would love that rain Bob. It’s hot and dry in a lot of places.
@vibewithmike It's still warm here with a temp of 21, feels like 25. Another hot day with a temp 25 with the humidity going to feel like 30. Next week temperature will be in the low 20s and cooler. I don't like fishing in this heat anymore. When I was younger the heat didn't bother me
Yeah, that heat can make it tough for catching fish too. I prefer sunrise fishing. Cool in the morning and you still have the whole afternoon after a few hours of fishing in the morn. 🐟🐠🎣🎣🎣🎣
@vibewithmike I like fishing in afternoon and early evening. Here in Fredericton we have the Saint John River that flows into the Bay of Fundy. Every six hours the Bay of Fundy changes tidal directions. In Saint John city they have the reversing falls. In coming tide it pushing the river back up over falls into the Saint John River to Fredericton. The Bay Of Fundy has the highest tides in the world from the Atlantic Ocean. High and low tide are different each day. I have a app that has the time for high and low tide. During tide changes I don't fish ever. High tide starts time might be 2pm for six hours or 5pm same thing with low tide it can be anytime. Good night, have a great weekend
Interesting about those highest tides! Here in Minnesota I fish a lot for Northern Pikes. I use a Daredevle lure. Whatever you catch with this lure will require a net. I love it! Check it out here. www.scheels.com/p/dardevle-imp-spoon/43332-2.html
I didn't realize it but it didn't make me jump. I'm surprised it waited to salute....lol
It was a powerful salute
I'm pretty sure that the PRT was going for a Master Salut and the lift bridge jumped the horn (pun intended)
The old jump the master move, eh!
@@vibewithmike I envision you saying that in a Maxwell Smart tone.
and.....loving it. LOL
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You know it!!!!!!!
Did you ever measure the horn on the Ryerson? I only ask because the only time I heard that I felt like I was being pushed backwards it was so loud.
Great question Jeffrey. I’ve never been lucky enough to see the Ryerson sailing. I hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday night my friend!⛴️⛴️⛴️
A paper model kit of this ship is available from Lake Freighter Minis for anyone that would like to build her. I just built the Col. James Schoonmaker; a model of the ship that is in the water on display in Toledo, Oh.
Hey Karl, are those kits easy to assemble?
Here’s what Karl is talking about. You can order here. www.lakefreighterminis.com/
@@vibewithmike those would be very cool gifts for Christmas. Either built or for building.
🚢
@@vibewithmike I saw that they even have the Edmund Fitzgerald.
