  • Stuff gets weird quick when a promotable position is on the line. Friends become competition and a surprising amount of emails get sent to 'all'
I'm going over three things to do and one thing to avoid at all costs during promotional testing season. The move from Firefighter to Lieutenant or Captain is a big one and the stress and disruption that the test causes is a great indicator of that.
Once that reading list gets posted, stuff is about to get weird.

Also a side question, how long should one stay riding backwards before trying to move up? For example my department desperately needs relief drivers. Despite being a probie, the chief has told me many times that I should start taking the classes I need to be a relief driver and that I could be a relief driver within my second year as a firefighter.
For me though, I feel like I have a basic competence as just a firefighter with a lot of room to get better, and I really want to get good at what I do before I think about moving up. Where's the line? I don't want to drive before I'm a good fireman, but also I see my department has a need and want to be a team player. Also if you're looking for ideas for a video feel free to address this question how you please.
