Watching these JJ videos about team USA made me realize how prevalent foreign bigs are in the nba. You got embiid, jokic, Sabonis, giannis, Steven adams, gobert, kat, ayton, vucevic, valanciunas, siakam, and more. And a lot of these players are huge for their respective teams.

    • @nolang1
      @nolang1 Před 8 měsíci

Yeah people like to talk about the 90s as the golden era of centers and I think a lot of that was due to there not being quality international depth at the position. The 7-8 guys who were Hall of Famers got to pad their numbers beating up on a bunch of players who wouldn't cut it in today's game.
Even now, imagine if you took 90% of the guys off that list and NBA teams have to replace them with American players - someone like Naz Reid would be an above-average starting center and there would be a bunch of current G league players getting legitimate rotation minutes.

Look, it's so easy to see that they didn't come CLOSE to fielding the best possible roster (or the eleventeenth-best).
This makes it VITAL to balance it perfectly, at least until Steph, Taytum, and ESPECIALLY (hopefully?) AD walk thru the locker room door.
Also important to grab Bam, like JJ notes; as well as other big time defenders and 2 way players. For instance, why NOT Draymond? Aaaaaannnnd---Olympics is a perfect kind of setting for Kawhi, where he doesn't feel the weight of carrying the entire team on his shoulders (thus causing him to over-extend himself and possibly suffer YET another catastrophic injury).
I'm thinking about bigs who are ultra-mobile and fast...or at least SO dominant on D (like AD, normally) thay it doesn't matter.

The main problem for the USA team is that everybody they send are Stars or go to guy in their respective teams. Everybody has that superstar are star player mindset and most of them thrive on iso plays or sets that are designed specifically for them, and for them to be in a team that they would be a role player they somewhat struggle. And that's what Euro teams expose about the new USA team, europeans are well adept with these FIBA and Olympic rules, and their advantage against the US is that these players are great role players, few of them are stars and that is why they make the system run better.
If the US can bring players or superstars who can thrive as a role player like Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Austin Reaves, guys like Kessler, Tucker, or A Tyson Chandler type big they surely dominate the tourneys. Isn't that what they did before with the 2012 2014 2026 team.

It would be amazing to see both of them compete together in the same team. Oh man I can't image the amount of heavyweight players Team USA will gathered to Paris. They just gotta make things correct it s useless to call 4 PG and just one center. Having too much ball handlers also i snot great players like Thompson should be considered instead of Mitchell or Brown. The team has to make sense. A team similar to the 17' Warriors would be great : Curry and another guard who can shoot like Booker & Thompson, Lillard as a backup PG or Fox/Irving, KD and Tatum, Bron as a facilitator and Green/Gordon as his backup and an athletic center with size who block shot like Turner or even Robinson and an all-around defender like Bam.

What I find interesting is that NBA role players have no problem stepping up into a bigger role on international teams. But NBA stars always struggle with becoming role players on team USA. And yes they are “used to more ball/shots” but the normal role players are used to catch and shoots and not ball handling. I think it’s a lack of acceptance from NBA stars of taking a lesser role for their team. Their whole career has been built of them being the man and they can’t handle becoming 4th string guy

    • @austinsimmons2902
      @austinsimmons2902 Před 8 měsíci

That might be it but I think it’s more cus it’s a lot harder of a skill to suppress yourself as a player. These nba stars have been used to being the center of a team for years, sometimes dating back to college, so it becomes more difficult to adapt to only doing one job. Ingram being a good example. But for a lot of role players, they may have been the man in college, but the talent pool in the nba is so advanced that they get fit into a lesser role. They’re still working on all these other skills like ball handling and other skills during the offseason that they have the capability to have the role in the nba, they just don’t get the opportunity. So when they do get the opportunity for their national team, it’s like all this work and practice shows during FIBA games.

I’m actually glad that u mentioned AG, he’s definitely one of the guys that could’ve made a huge impact if he was on team USA. That being said here’s my list
    Jimmy
    Gordon
    PG
    Tatum
    KD
    Steph
    Bam
    Brown
    AD
    LeBron
    Jrue
    Jarrett
I know Jrue and Jarrett are probably not household names but Jrue is an elite defender for his position and has exceptional playmaking skills. Jarrett on the other hand has size, athleticism, and one of the best elite defenders in the league right now. So they will fit their role nicely on the squad

It's still a problem, since top veteran stars usually only wants to play in the Olympics. When it's Fiba again expect this guy's to sit out again

    PF: Zion, Bagley II
    SF: Paolo, Lamelo*

FIBA Team USA is the Ben Simmons of teams. Hoping to do the bare minimum and still win. They haven't got a heap of overhead to make themselves a lot better either. Bron is past his prime, KD is slipping. I think Steph and Tatum would make the team better, as would Bam. But yeah, add in Sabonis to Lithuania, Murray to Canada, Giannis to Greece, Jokic to Serbia, and everyone else gets proportionally better as well. FIBA is where we see a lot of the narratives, biases and officiating problems disappear and we get a good fair competition.

Myles Turner, Jared Allen, John Collins, Nick Claxton, Robert Williams, Plumlee. In a league dominated by perimeter players, these bigs (not to mention AD & Bam) would beautifully complete the USA roster

It's crazy the like 2 years ago, Kawhi was considered a top 5 player in the league, and JJ just skipped right past him and was like "I want Donovan Mitchell and Paul George" without even answering if he wants Kawhi. I agree though. Same with Harden. Hard pass.

JJ was probably just focusing and blocked out whatever his cohost said from his thought process lol he praised Kawhi many times
He probably also didnt wanna start a tangent about Kawhi's health given the fact that him suiting up for international play is very low however i would love him to suit up for Team USA even if that means taking a lesser role and less minutes
Also there isn't 5 players better at basketball than Kawhi Leonard he just sadly has health limitations

Even someone like Bam can only do so much. Even though he has some bulk to him, he's only 6'9. Not only that, but he typically don't play as well against the likes of a Jokic or Rob Williams. The Fiba setting has a good mix of both

Got a few takes that I would love for you guys to discuss that really paints the picture of how US is building talent vs the world:
    1. Who would win right now? US team vs World team? My take is world would win
    2. Same question regarding the 90s, 2000s, 2010s - my take is US would win
    3. Is the US team favored vs the field in the upcoming olympics? My take is no but not by much
    4. Same question regarding the 90s, 2000s, 2010s - my take is US is favored vs the field
    5. After KD, Lebron, Curry retire, is the US team favored at all? My take is no, definitely not against the field
It feels like the trend is not only that basketball is becoming a more global game but also that US is not generating as much star power as it used to. The mega-athletes of Jordan, Shaq, Lebron, Kobe, TMAC, KD, Rose, wade, melo, Dwight Howard are not produced at the same rate by the US anymore. Zion could be the next physical specimen but finds it hard to stay on the court. And overall the level of athleticism we used to see in the NBA is just not there - the NBA had crazy athletes all around, even if they were not full grown stars - Gerald Wallace, JR Smith, Jason Richardson, Stacey Augmon, Steve Francis, Alonzo Morning, just to name a few. It feels like the size, physicality and tenacity is just not there anymore for the US. Do you agree and why do you think that is? Is the NBA game becoming smaller and more shooting oriented has something to do with it?
