When all the trades and hunting for stars was happening, I had a feeling it would leave the team in shambles - but knowing they got Dinwiddie back, and seeing how smart of a guy Cam seems to be, I get a feeling it can come back to that "young guys with aspiration and beautiful team basketball".

Cam is a very smart guy. He got his masters degree in four years and wrote his thesis while still preparing for the draft if I remember correctly
I got so much respect for Cam Johnson after this interview. He was able to articulate his thought process at a well mannered way. I can see him being either a coach or a GM after his long basketball career .
I think an under appreciated thing about FIBA basketball that is the natural pride that all teams have in comparison to the USA going into the event. For most, this is the largest national platform these players will ever have while also representing their home country. For USA players , they are ALL NBA players, their dream has been achieved in that sense of recognition.

Excuses. They sent Nba players, some of which very high caliber. They sent best coaches also. Fact is the level of defense and effort that is being played in you average Nba game is very low. The first thing that stood out in this FIBA championship and it probably surprised Nba players is the level of effort rest of the world puts in guarding. Players shuffle their feet, close out, get as physical as possible, something that used to be standard in Nba. They dont just sit there in the zone and switch everything. The Dream Team, if they send it, will win the Olympics but its not gonna be the walk in a park like it was for 92' team.

this is the most common thing brought up when comparing Team USA to other teams, so I don't think this is underappreciated at all.
All I gotta say is... There's no such thing as AAU in these overseas countries that give us hell. 15-16 year olds play grown professionals which builds the IQ of the young players faster AND it's a more physical game.
AAU isn’t going anywhere too much money involved, either the nba itself or a couple of very wealthy ex pros need to get involved to make real change

@@Widhcdkajdbkdp You don't want the NBA to monopolize the sport more than it already has. Coaches have to be held to a higher standard, but that's kinda neutralized given the current society we're in. So with that, young players from middle school to high school have to train against older/better players, then go to schools/programs where they'll actually be challenged and not where they'll look better than they actually are.
@@Odhran2017 You have to understand that the NBA, especially in recent years, is as much the entertainment business as it is the sport of basketball. Anything that Vegas has its hands in isn't gonna be 100% pure.
These guys from these countries don't have anything to play for other than the pride of their country. Even the NBA guys who are from these countries finally get some freedom to play the FIBA style they're accustomed to which is why you see role players look like beasts against the same American NBA players who are higher touted.

But when luka said its way easier to score in the nba people were shocked. This is why so many players get to 30 ppg nowadays in the nba. So much space and that 3 sec rule gives so many easy shots. In comparison to the euroleague the nba regular season looks like practice
It still amazes me how much contact they allow the offensive player to make while driving. Giannis, Zion, LeBron and Harden often will just bulldoze straight into their defender which in any other league would be an offensive foul.
The fiba game proves that nineties basketball is still relevant ! Scoreboard pressure via scoring inside and of passing action is often better than spreading the court and everyone launching 3 pointers. Teams that rebound at both ends and attack the ring are fiba standards and is also why the USA where more dominant in the past .
@pgrand8888 Gotta go out and really recruit some big-time rebounding and defensive paint beasts. Sorry but we definitely do need a big-time true big man who can be stuck in the paint and guard it and get the boards. I guess Kevon Looney, but Looney's not a good defensive player, he's just a big-man who's a box-out and rebounder. We also need another guy who can go out and play defense and go and score. Miles Turner is who I wanted for the Tokyo Olympics and he said No, not this year. The Olympics only come once every 4 years, and it's up to our best coaches to go and got some of these really great players. After this season is over, depending on who's hurt and who's healthy, we need to get ready for the Olympics now. Not when the olympics come or a few weeks before then, but right now is when we should be getting our roster for the Olympics.
I had no idea who Cam Johnson was. But after seeing him on your podcast, I am now a fan of his game IQ and insight. Wish him all the luck in his career. Will definitely be tuning into his games once the NBA season starts.

I really love this interview and Cam seems like a great guy. The one thing I don’t really think JJ gives enough credit to is Canada, truly. They also had the same adjustment as the States, were missing some big names, and still adjusted and were able to beat US in the medal game.
The other part is, the US didn't have all our guys either.

Fiba play is more like 90s/2000s style ball fundamentals are key, they box out punish small ball mismatches and run offense not iso

Well, all the differences, in the rules, in the court, they make it quite different. The defensive 3 sec changes the whole dynamic of a defense, the spacing on the floor, the whole game. The travelling and carrying rules that seem to not exist in the NBA combined with the handchecking, change the dynamic in the offense and the defense. It all adds up to make the game different. If European teams had to adjust to NBA rules and courts for a World Cup, I'm quite certain USA would most likely win easily. And I'm European, I'm not trying to defend the US.

The best players of US are taking care of themselves because they only have so much time where they earn through playing ball and there's no shame in that and some international stars did rest too like jokic and Murray. But, you see some young superstars such as Luka and SGA competing in those tournaments, can't young US stars play? Tatum? Brown? Etc. They don't need to rely too much on Lebron, curry, and durant because they've already won at that stage and are already old so they get a pass. But the younger US stars should put their asses out there to play.

Cam Johnson is truly a very based, chill guy. Ouside of being a crazy good fundamental basketball talent, I like how he handles this interview, not making excuses and shows a ton of respect to the experience as a whole. I'm confident if they run it back, they will do quite a bit better and we're going to see a good year of Cam for the upcoming season.
As a Piston fan it was nice to hear them say good things about Cade and Jalen Duren.

With the Ryder Cup on at the minute I think a Team USA vs Rest of the World match/series would be a great watch. Giannis, Jokic, Embiid Luka and Murray would give an American team a real test. There's enough quality international players in the league now to make this really competitive.
The problem with this is the NBA is an INCLUSIVE league (at least that’s what they want to portray). This would do nothing but build more division within the basketball fanbase and there’s already so much at the moment it’s ruining the integrity of the sport

When I watch Team USA (or the NBA), I can't help but think of all those summers these players wasted playing Nike summer league street ball and never learning to play any defense or run any sets. FIBA is about playing TEAM ball.

European basketball on offense is a blend of soccer movements with spacing and players off ball, but can go to nba basketball 1v1 when the offense breaks down. They run a better version of the warriors offense

The initial comment is overselling it indeed. But it also is more than just playing together longer. Teams like Serbia and Germany play better team basketball than NBA that are together a long time. Because European teams play more team ball and less iso, this is harder to defend against.

I mean if they had more time to gel and practice then yeah it would be more of an embarrassment but these teams do have a system where as we just got out of a season put a coaching staff together and put younger players together. So they have to adjust to coaches, players, and rules. Whereas these other teams are used to the rules and system

In international basketball there's no apparent bias for star players, they call traveling and you're allowed to play defense. It's pretty straightforward. This idea that Evan Fournier becomes Michael Jordan just because he's representing his country or whatever is nonsense, it's that the Americans actually have to play real basketball now and they aren't particularly used to it. The NBA is garbage.

As an Asian, I have zero horses in this race but Ive been watching NBA for roughly two decades. Personally, think American are just overconfident. I mean yeah yall have the most talent but the roster you send to competed does not contain a single NBA all star, and American is basketball relying heavily on individual more than any basketball team in the world. That format become more and more vulnerable especially playing against national team that know each other game way better. For a long while yall just out talent the world which is why yall always take it for granted. Its freaking disrespectful to the rest of the planet to think yall just gonna win everything with a B- squad.
You've been watching the weakest era of basketball. Pre-2004, the NBA was truly the best game/league in the world.
One more thing that I don't hear being talked about is the fact that by the quarter finals, it's one game elimination. This gives underdogs a much better chance for upsets. Imagine how March Madness or the NFL plays out compared to the NBA playoffs. One bad game and you're going home.

Great talk ! NBA teams could, imho, learn a lot from some of the FIBA tactics like using layered screens, more off-ball movement on offense, more help defense in the interior (although there is the 3-seconds-rule, of course) and more offensive rebounding, like JJ suggested.
And as someone who loves both, the NBA and international FIBA games, can we please get some better refereeing in the NBA in terms of travels and foul calls on "3-point attempts" ? Allowing traveling to run rampant and sending people to shoot 3 free throws over nothing repeately really ruins the regular season for me (play-offs are much better in that regard).

Gonna be another gold in year at Paris Olympics '24. So, why worry about a World championship when we already got 2 in 2010 and 2014.
Lovely to see NBA players without too many excuses giving less talented national teams their flowers and even gaining inspiration about what to do in the NBA (crash the glass, ofc).
USA is like England in the 40s. They treated the World Cup like a weaker competition and assumed that England was always the de facto best. That they could always win it if they sent a competent squad.
The world is catching up though. Serbia has the same per capita of players in the NBA as the US. The US will always be top 3 but it’s absurd to think that a 100% win rate is going to continue. And honestly you don’t want that because it means international competition is weak and centers basketball entirely in the US.

USA was a young team of very talented players. European teams are long time associates and older players who play the game so that everyone is featured depending on the circumstances. In other words, the way a team game should be played and was always played before one--on-one became the norm in the NBA. Young guys watch the all-time great clips of guys torching people over and over and think that's how you play. They should try to find whole classic games to watch and learn more about team play. MJ, Doc, Magic, Bird, Kobe etc. etc. did not win by themselves! Canada also had young talented NBA players. North Americans assumed that would be the final but experience and familiarity and team play are more important so Canada third, Americans fourth.
My respect for this young man went up after this podcast.

This is the same in gaming where theres a "meta" that manifests. And some metas work better in different patch versions of the game, and some metas suit different players and playstyles. In the past the talent gap was enough to offset all of that. Now, they need more than just talent.

i thought cam johnson was a stuck-up especially whenever he was being interviewed after his torrid scoring run early this year w/ the nets, but it turns out he and Austin reeves were the amiable ones during team usa's manila stay. these 2 guys interacted a lot w/ their fans whenever they can. the other guys were kinda aloof.
This loss was down to bad coaching, Kerr had JJJ playing center when he’s a bad rebounder and really not a great post defender, he started Brunson when we would’ve been much better off with Haliburton started. Fiba is a different game, but you know that going in. International teams know how to exploit weaknesses, and if you can’t make adjustments then you’re going to lose. We got thrashed on the glass and got out to terrible starts. The starters should’ve been :
1-Haliburton
2-Edwards
3-Bridges
4-JJJ
5-Kessler

Nic Claxton should’ve been on that team! He would’ve been perfect. Extremely athletic runs the floor, block shots active on the boards. Pick n roll lob target. This version of USA didn’t have a lob target. That’s easy buckets if you detach from the shooters.
the players in the NBA always said that they have a role, and they are either liking their role or learning about their role. in the rest of the world? you don’t have a role, you just play, everyone needs to be able to shoot, rebound and defend. that’s it. that’s the difference.
NBA rules and interpretations (Defensive 3-seconds-in-the-key whilst allowing offensive "camping" in the key, lax moving screen, carried ball, travelling & "gathering", charging vs holding, etc..) have essentially rewarded offensive initiative over defensive initiative over the past few decades. FIBA has seen some different interpretations, although is a little more fair at rewarding initiative and player space (the players "cylinder" as originally coined) within the boundaries of microseconds in space and time that might distinguish who is entitled to that part of the basketball court when "foul" contact took place. It might be helpful to NBA players if they spent more years in college playing a higher level of team defence before entering the pros as it's quite clear the FIBA teams play much tougher team defence, and as a consequence have better team offense strategies and technique. There are always trade-offs for the players however and especially when ones livelihood/profession can easily be compromised by injuries, more easily sustained when having to play aggressively at both ends of the court for such a long season as is the NBA.

They lost because of the politics of putting that squad together. They needed better shooting and ball handling. Trey Young and another big would have been a better fit. You can pack the paint. The 3 point line would have been a layup for Trey and more that one real shooter. And they should have played faster.
one player who should draw a lot of eyes this season is bogdan bogdanovic, feel like he's always been known as a shot creating sharpshooter, but what he did for his serbian team was elite. his playmaking surprised me most, he understood how to keep his teammates involved. Hawks need to give him the green light and let him take pressure of trae and DM
Ok, real talk. The US, used to be the physical team, but when we lost in 04, it was because the rest of the world was running around shooting 3s and we had all these bruisers. So the US “adjusted” and now we run around shooting 3s and the rest of the world has the bruisers. I am so tired of the US’s inability to digest more than one style of ball. Did we send our best players? No. But the coaching, recruitment and program in general, is a joke. Get it together.

Nba used to be more physical then fiba. Fiba seems to be more physical now. they became soft! Nba needs to be more physical again like the 80s and 90s!!! Nba also needs to get more fundamentals again
Well there kind of is a valid excuse. They couldn’t adapt to fiba rules. NBA has them playing a certain way and changing that is almost impossible for them.
It’s not an excuse, the teams from other country were simply better than USA.
The inflated stats from the NBA rules (soft defense, flopping, traveling, load management, etc.) does not translate to success internationally.
Besides Valanciunis, there were many European and Canadian players in the FIBA championship who are in the NBA, and they seemed to be perfectly fine. So what was it about the US players?!
Lack of preparation and familiarity with Fiba rules. Team Canada demanded a 3 year commitment from platers, which means more preparation. Valanciunis has been playing Fiba competitions during the nba off-season for years, so he is more familiar with rules like not having the defensive 3 seconds.

@@Mad_Intalect Agree 1000%. Alarm bells were ringing for me when USA Basketball decided to have an off year instead of holding a training camp in the 2022 NBA off-season.
Because they learned real team basketball as kids .
American kids learn to make mixtapes of flashy handles, shooting 3's or dunking when they're bigger than the other kids .

Ngl, Fiba is a more entertaining product. The athleticism in the NBA is obviously unmatched but Euroleague and Olympic basketball is what I would call the closest to what Naismith created. I love the NBA too just to clarify

FIBA plays early 90s nba ball: crash boards, be physical, play defense. New age players aren't used to playing this way and it's why we lost.
6 weeks of preparation is too little to mould a completely new roster into a team and get them used to Fiba rules. They should have got the players and coaches together for a Fiba training camp in the 2022 off-season. Either incrrease the preparation to get a better result or keep things as they are and accept that Team USA might not even medal. As an international fan, I'd want to see the former.

So what? Americans are like this with all sports. We expect to win everything. When it’s the Olympics we expect to win the most medals, we expect to have the fastest sprinters, the best gymnasts, the best basketball players, the best swimmers. The only sport we don’t care about is Soccer.
