US president Biden makes first visit to war-torn Ukraine, meets Zelensky

- U.S. President Joe Biden made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Monday (February 20) in a show of support ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion, promising President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that Washington would stand with Ukraine as long as it takes.
Air raid sirens blared across the Ukrainian capital as Biden visited Kyiv, although there were no reports of Russian missile or air strikes.
The White House said Biden would announce more sanctions on Russia and military support for Ukraine including artillery ammunition, anti-armor systems and air surveillance radars.

I am cautiously optimistic that President Biden (and the USA) will deliver on those pledges. But I am full well aware that next year is an election year in the USA. The west has to support Zelensky and Ukraine, and has to help defeat Putin. Otherwise. China will move on Taiwan. That will be the thin end of the wedge, and the freedoms that those of us in western democracies enjoy will be in jeopardy. Putin must be defeated in this crazy war, and the good people of Russia (of which there are many) , must be saved from this tyrannical despot.

Imagine how tired President Biden must be with a flight to Poland and then a ten hour trip by train into Kyiv! I hated to think he might take the risk to go but now I see how important it is to actually show up for the Ukrainian people and for them to see their President and ours side by side.

Good to see! Now what is needed is the rapid, timely supply of heavy weapons and ammo in large, decisive quantities to Ukraine. That includes long range missiles and combat aircraft to provuse air cover for armored ground forces.

@@Withnail1969 there are plentiful supplies if all kinds held in strategic stockpiles, eg Abrams tanks over 3500, F16 fighters over 1400 just in the US. No mid or long range missiles have been supplied at all so stocks have not been run down. Most of what has been supplied is obsolete and due for scrapping eg old Bradleys or howitzers or its very close to its use by date such as hand held anti tank missiles.
