The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto (梁祝小提琴协奏曲), along with the Yellow River Piano Concerto, is one of the most famous orchestra works of Chinese music. It is an orchestral adaptation of an ancient legend, the Butterfly Lovers. Written for the western style orchestra, it features a solo violin played using some Chinese techniques.
The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto is written in traditional 5-note technique (pentatonic scale), it uses many Chinese melodies, chord structures and patterns. This gives the piece a distinctive "Chinese" sound, though it uses tonal harmonies.
The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto was written in 1959 by two Chinese composers, He Zhanhao (何占豪, born 1933) and Chen Gang (陈钢, born 1935), while they were students at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.[1] The music did not attain popularity before the late 1970s, when China loosened its restrictions after the Cultural Revolution. Once released from censorship, it became an embodiment of China in transition. The work is a common feature in figure skating and in concert halls worldwide.

Actually it was intended to be a experimental piece but to the composers big surprises it turns out to be the biggest hits ever !

Puccini elevated and used the Jasmine tone so dynamically, it drastically empowered and glorified the chinese song. In the opera, the tone was instilled shock, hate, furious and victorious senses, much much richer than the original song. This violin piece is pretty much in line with the same theme. Not the same to the artistry of opera Turandot, not at all!

@@alan5496 Turandot opera borrowed a few themes of chinese songs, the most famous one among them is the jasmine song. But the composer only borrow and had a touch of that, not the majority thing.

@@canman5060 By violin setting, this piece is edified and elevated high and across the globe, it has been frequently appeared on FM radio, but it is still long way to go to be as popular as that Jasmine song which was empowered and glorified by Italian man Puccini.
I hope to see male figure skaters to take this music for ice. It cannot be only narrowed into female or pair stuff.
And to be played by none chinese none asian, it is a huge thing. And to be delivered so much grander with masculine lines by a male Jew, it is further to reconfirm that this piece carries a tone of universal truth without borders.

Chen Gang, one of the two composers of the concerto, has said that this was his favorite recording of the concerto. Gil Shaham studied how the Chinese instrument, erhu, was played before recording it. Several people have commented how his playing sounded more Chinese than the Chinese violinists

If you analyse the melody a little bit, you might find that this isn't strictly pentatonic. This is what we call music with pentatonicity, but not actually in a strict pentatonic mode. The non-pentatonic notes are treated in ways that allow them to not disturb the pentatonicity.
