I love how Justin rarely makes comparisons between The Darkness and bands/artists he talks about. While he certainly has a drive to make great music and be a fantastic entertainer, he doesn't seem to have a competitive bone in his body. Very Zen. Yet he is making interesting music that has a basis in fundamental blues and rock n roll while moving rock n roll forward just like Jack White.

Meh. That’s one of the oldest tricks in the video playbook. That’s straight out of film school back in the analog day. It’s no different than splicing tape or creating feedback. Just a Mickey Mouse trick. Not really “a trip”. Tons of music video producers tried that back in the 90’s. I even remember watching an old Smashing Pumpkins DVD commentary where the director said they did that exact same thing, but that Billy Corgan vetoed it. Essentially, it’s what you do on the fly when you don’t have the software or the time.

I would contend as a guitarist that Jack White's sound can be described as "raw" with respect to the expressiveness of his solos. Sure he has a lot of effects and production on them but the vibe and style convey the emotion of rawness compared to say Malmsteen if you catch my drift?

For something a bit left field I'd love to hear your thoughts on Mdou Moctar, he's a Toureg guitarist from Niger (the same tribe who's musicians supposedly helped inspire Plant and Page on Kashmir). Jack White actually had him playing in the live venue he has in his record store. He plays amazing guitar but it's so refreshing to hear these totally different melodies and notes, never going where you would expect. He only discovered the likes of Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen around 2015 so you can hear how they have influenced his still faithful to tradition sound. Fascinating story if you dig it and read in to him.

Although a theremin *was* used in the recording of "Good Vibrations", the Beach Boys did not use a theremin when performing it in concert. I had the delight of attending one of their sound checks in the late '60s, and ventured up onto the stage to see their gear. The signature riff of the tune was played on what appeared to be a sort of ribbon controller, that had the notes marked off in some white marking substance, so that Mike Love could move his finger precisely, rather than guess. Some years back, I was thrilled to receive an e-mail from Tom Polk, who developed the Tannerin for the Beach Boys, confirming my recollection.
It takes tremendous skill to be able to "play" a theremin melodically. A buddy brought one over that had a quantizer attached, to be able to provide pitched notes rather than silly glissandos and it was still hard to make one's hand move in as precise a manner as required.

(This question is asked with a lot of love and not a hint of criticism) I wonder if it's now time for a new take on the theme song?
The initial Stairway-esque intro had that great ascending line into the falsetto and really captured that initial sense of "Wow, this CZcams venture is going to be fab, what can possibly go wrong?". And now, though I like the descending version, the second "again" on the E minor(?) is a bit melancholy for what are otherwise quite joyous pieces of content. It's like that second "again" would more naturally finish a line like "Ah man, I'm saying really good stuff but I'm going to get abused by horrible anonymous people again... (E minor) agaaaaain..." :'(
Can I recommend a third version that captures more of a Born to Run spirit? (F) Justin Hawkins (Bb) rides agai(F)n... you anonymous trolling cunts(C7) Like a (F)vision he dances across the porch... etc
Anyway, just a kind thought from a big fan. Give us a joyful intro song again, Lad.

I met Jack once. Funny story. Walking into Gruhn’s Guitars in Nashville. My sister was with me and as I walked in I see Jack, before I could say anything as he looked up and smiled my sister goes “WORD UP EDWARD SCISSOR HANDS!”
I About died. She had no clue who Jack was. He could see the look of horror on my face, smiled, laughed and said his hello’s.

I love his new stuff. He has brought back some of the White Stripes sound, particularly Icky Thump. I think this material is very Detroit New Wave Garage Bandesque.

The idea book. It's out of print, and the one you can find online is a forgery that doesn't work. Most people want to be buried with theirs, so you have to be prepared to bribe a funeral parlor, I'm afraid.

Live with White Stripes Jack played a plastic Sears guitar from the 60s that was falling apart into a Big Muff & a Digitech Whammy, I forget what amps but loads of reverb. So yeah, it is a processed tone, but I'd say it's still raw sounding, especially live. Raw as in abrasive, not raw as in "clean" as you said, or untouched/pristine whatsoever. Hopefully I'm not a moron?

The thing I think people ALWAYS missed about Jack.....is that he was never into nostalgia.
He was always super into the next big cool thing. And in the 30s....that was blues. In the 50s....rock n roll. In the 80s....hip hop. In the 90s....alternative grunge stuff. And now.....computer aided stuff. Jack just loves whatever feels GOOD and genuine and honest and real and powerful and direct. It's not actually about nostalgia....and never really was.
