      Mass agriculture is horrible for Hawaian lands. Waist run off into ocean from fertilizer and pesticides kill reefs and fish. It's a pipe dream to think we can farm on the islands on a mass scale. Not to mention the massive water usage needed.

    Fish hatcheries might be a great idea....we always need more fish in the islands.

    So how much did we pay for the study? That was what we learned and cried out to fix during covid shutdown.

    You didn't need a study to understand Hawaii's dependency and vulnerability with tourism.

    They’re just now figuring this out? Really? It took a study?

      The statement they should have made is that this has been talked about for a couple generations now . Pretty much as soon as cane started faltering . But the real change will have to be wanted by a certain party and they're pretty comfortable where things are and will only make noise once in a while to make like they noticed the problem

    Imagine Hawaii is a big bag of a billion dollars. Everyone lives within the state buying and selling with each other. The only way you go up is if someone else goes down. Tourists bring big bags of money in and they leave with smaller bags in exchange for great experiences while visiting a beautiful island paradise. Diversification is a good idea, but turning your back on tourism would be stupid.

    Ask your "local" customers where do they work. Hotels, Airlines, Retailers that need tourist customers, Restaurants. So let's get rid of their jobs. Do you think you'll still have a lot of customers? Very short sighted. A local customer doesn't mean you don't need tourists.

    The news story is poorly done as the food business focusing on locals is only passing on money between locals like Zippy's and L&L and not bringing new money into the state and is not reflective of the study itself. You should have expounded on the industries mentioned at the end in more detail.

    Hemp hubs for STEAM curriculum including food forests. Ban foreign ownership of hotels tax the extractive industries to support the local economy and land stewardship.

    Let the natives make the decisions. If you regulate the amount of tourists on ea island, you can isolate the problems pretty quickly. The point is to incorporate the Hawiian people into running their own islands. Hawiians need to be paid a percentage of what the tourism brings in, they need to know what the toll is taking on their lands. Covid should have woken them up because it was more isolated travel wise. This is ridiculous.

    Old news. We all knew back before Maui opened it's airport runway to mainland traffic that it would forever change the island. That's why so many thousands of people signed that petition going against that plan but was ignored by government. Jump islands and the Oahu rail is a good example of how screwed up our state has become. 70+ years of democrat rule is too blame.

  • @JasonB808
    @JasonB808 Před 2 dny

    If tourists from Mainland are coming to Hawaii on cheap flights, just how much money they going to spend? Not much. What Hawaii is missing is the high spending Japanese tourists. However the issue is Japan’s weak yen, the amount of travelers from Japan are at its lowest ever.
    Just talking to one Juice shop in Maui where people are actively trying to keep each other afloat is not what businesses on Oahu are facing. Tourist hardly go to places outside of the usual tourist traps so many businesses outside these tourist traps do business with local residents. That’s their only business. For example, what tourist gonna go buy food from a Zippy’s in Waipahu or Pearl City. It’s only locals go there. The problem is locals are fighting the rising costs of living in Hawaii. Many locals are moving away to the mainland because they can’t afford living here anymore.
